Our Values

Three chief points UNAIR wants to establish for its quest to be a successful World Class University:

1. Strengthening our Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (the three duties as a higher education). First, we conduct a learning process which is supported by qualified academics, researchers, and students across all fields, ranging from health science, life science, and social science. Second, we focus on joint research activities on continual bases, with the understanding that knowledge and experience can be learned from anyone. Third, we accomplish community development by upholding community services, offering training and workshops, performing facilitation for the community as well as for the government in our three main areas of competence: health science, life science, and social science.

2. Having “Excellence in Morality” as the motto that UNAIR teaches students nationalism, statehoods, and the noble values of our national character and identity. UNAIR also teaches the supreme value and philosophy ingrained within Universtas Airlangga. Furthermore, UNAIR wants to excel in its performance at the international level while at the same time, preserving and complying with religious values and social norms. Local wisdom is an important value disseminated by the university throughout its academic community. Nevertheless, global insight continues to be one of references embedded thoroughly. We confirm that UNAIR is always open to everyone, as we believe that the more we engage in a broader scope, the wider of the horizons of thought we gain.

3. Procuring more supporting facilities, such as laboratories that complement the learning activities of the department at the faculty level. We proudly pronounce that since 2012 our Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education had acknowledged and awarded UNAIR as a center of excellent for science and technology research. It means that UNAIR is positioned as the center of health science in this nation, so that the hospital and research centers owned by UNAIR are not only functioning for accomplishing science and academic development, but also for rendering services to society. Synergizing with various partners, both national and international, is indispensable. Most importantly, the purpose of any partnerships is to promote the welfare of society. In addition, we aim to develop and contribute in the scientific and technological fields by solving various problems in the global world.

We fully understand that the journey we will take is not a tranquil path, however we do it with absoluteconviction that we will arrive to our destination we pursue. Viva Airlangga.

Welcome to Universitas Airlangga Over time, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has proven itself to be one the prides of the nation. And for the next step, UNAIR will assert its position and reputation towards global networking. UNAIR proudly presents itself to be one of the World Class Universities. In that spirit, UNAIR will emerge as a new power in higher education coming from Indonesia that will enrich the wealth of education in the global auspice.

Today, World Class University brings UNAIR to a new venture. The venture is full of challenges and demands to proof the genuine strengths that UNAIR has. Moving forward, we understand that the preparation to be a World Class University is rigorous and will demand all components to contribute their very best. Only with the solid endeavor and optimum support for all stakeholders, can UNAIR muster the willpower to be the World Class University with a

resounding performance.

Since its establishment in 10 November 1954, UNAIR shoulders have a sacred duty to educate this nation. In that robust journey, UNAIR has proven itself to be one of the leading benchmark universities in Indonesia, and for the eastern region in particular. And so UNAIR is given the opportunity of being a representation of Indonesian higher education to the eyes of the world.

The establishment of Universitas Airlangga in 1954 (hereinafter referred to as UNAIR) cannot be separated from the long journey of higher education in Indonesia. The forerunner of this university was Dokter Djawa School

(Javanese Medical School), founded in Batavia in 1851.

In the course of history, the institution was reorganized into School Tot Opleiding van Indische Ar tsen

(STOVIA) in 1902. Eleven years later, based on the Government Decision

" B e s l u i t va n d e G o u v e r n e u r va n Nederlandsch Indie" No. 4211 dated May 8, 1913, a medical school called

Nederlandsch Indische Artsen School

(NIAS) was established in Surabaya. Located at Jl. Kedungdoro No. 38 Surabaya, NIAS was inaugurated on July 1, 1913, while its education activity began on July 15, 1913. In 1928, School Tot Opleiding van Indische Tandartsen

(STOVIT) was established as a school for dentistry.

In the Japanese colonial period, both STOVIA in Jakarta and NIAS in Surabaya were closed in 1942, and then merged into IKA DAI GAKU. By the end of Japanese colonial period in 1945, the

Indonesian government took over the college and changed its name into

Pe r g u r ua n T i n g g i Ke d o k t e ra n R I .

However, during the Dutch aggression, the college was closed and in 1948 was replaced with Faculteit der Geneeskunde

Surabaya Branch as a branch of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitet Indonesia.

Only then, based on Government Regulation No. 57 of 1954 on the establishment of Airlangga University per November 1, 1954, the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Institute in Surabaya were separated from their "mother" institution, Universitet Indonesia. Then on November 10, 1954, the then Indonesian President, Dr. Ir. Soekarno, formalized the establishment of Universitas Airlangga as the third State University (PTN) in Indonesia after the University of Indonesia and Gadjah Mada University.

The university was named after Airlangga a very famous king in the 11th century, whose name means "the

Preserver". He was known as a wise and competent king who was able to unite the territories in the eastern part of Indonesia.

UNAIR became a State University (PTN) with a State-owned Legal Entity (BHMN) status based on Government Regulation (PP) No. 30 Year 2006 on the Establishment of Airlangga University as a State-owned Legal Entity (BHMN). Then, based on the Higher Education Act No. 12 of 2012, UNAIR became one of the seven PTN-BHMN which was entitled to the statutes of a State University having a Legal Entity status (PTN-BH).

Furthermore, the statutes of UNAIR itself were based on the Indonesian Government Regulation Number 30 Year 2014 concerning the Statutes of Universitas Airlangga. In 2015,, UNAIR was trusted by the Ministry of Research, and Technology of Higher Education on behalf of the government to become one of the five state universities in Indonesia which were encouraged to be in the list of World's 500 Best Universities.

King Airlangga is portrayed as Lord Vishnu (or Wisnu in Javanese) riding a

Garuda mythical bird and carrying an urn which contains the "Amrta" (Water of Eternal Life). This symbol is used to describe Airlangga as an eternal source of knowledge.

Historically, in UNAIR’s early times, its First Rector, Prof. Mr. AG Pringgodigdo,, found a seal with the picture of King Airlangga in Gedung Arca Jakarta. The picture was not very clear at first but after a restoration, the kingdom seal was named "Garuda Muka" which showed Lord Vishnu’s Garuda bird carrying an urn containing the water of Amrta.

Legend has it that the water could revive the dead and give eternal life. The bird ridden by Lord Vishnu is called Garuda Muka and used as the symbol of UNAIR as an institution of perpetual source of knowledge.

Our flag consists of two colors: yellowish gold and blue. Yellowish gold is defined as a symbol of grandeur (greatness), while blue is a sign of knighthood and deep soul.

The history of the establishment of UNAIR’s flag began when the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Ir. Soekarno, formalized the establishment of Universitas Airlangga on November 10, 1954. At the inauguration,, President Soekarno marked the procession by the opening of yellowish gold and blue fabric cover on Vishnu statue.

In the course of time when UNAIR was looking for some input on what was the desired color to be used as the flag of the university, the colors of Vishnu statue’s fabric cover were designated as the color of the University’s flag, yellowish gold and blue, to honor the suggestion of Prof. RM Soejoenoes as well as to perpetuate the historical event (the inauguration of UNAIR).

Excellence

With

Morality

Morality Base:

the members of UNAIR should have the morality not to violate the applicable rules or norms.

Strong Academic Culture:

UNAIR has a strong and deeply-rooted academic Culture.

Excellence:

the members of UNAIR should always give the best to the surrounding environment.

Orientation on Targets:

the members of UNAIR should adopt result-oriented approach to reach optimal performance.

Excellence with Morality

is reflected in four values, namely:

UNAIR is one of Indonesia's leading universities and a prominent center of higher education in the eastern part of Indonesia. Thus, the main focus of the campus is indeed to improve academic quality over the time. Globalization is not considered an obstacle but rather as an opportunity to carry out the development of education, research, and a variety of community services.

UNAIR constantly innovates to a c t u a l i z e t h e i n t e g r a t i o n a n d collaboration of various disciplines, particularly in the areas of health, economics, humanities, social sciences, local wisdoms, and science and technology. The objective is to mutually strengthen every discipline to continue to exist and to contribute to the society, not only at the national level but also at the international level.

UNAIR is concerned with its research• ]based entrepreneurial vision in order to actualize the independence

of the nation supported by the efficiency and effectiveness of the human and n a t u r a l re s o u r ce s . I n s t i t u t i o n a l development focusing on the quality is also endlessly carried out.

UNAIR always embraces external parties to cooperate with, either with other universities or with other institutions, both from within and outside the country. This is a real contribution taking place at a global level. UNAIR will engage in any action to tackle global issues, ranging from social problems, technological development, medical research, to economic issues. Some examples are formulating the completion of the avian influenza virus and promoting the Islamic (Sharia)- based economy as an alternative of economic activities/society-based businesses.

In general, UNAIR wishes to contribute to and thrive at an international level without leaving the

values of nationalism. Mutualistic symbiosis based on society welfare has become the jargon of this campus.

UNAIR has also exercised global partnerships for global networking. Thus, this campus also plays a vital role as the center of national health science development through bio-ecosocio-cultural approaches. Consequently, UNAIR has transformed itself into a distinguished academic center with both national and international standards. It has also become a reputable center for science and technology-based research focusing on creating solutions for global problems.

Professionalism and competence of UNAIR’s lecturers are unquestionable. There are aapproximately 1040 lecturers holding master degrees, 495 lecturers with doctoral degrees and 167 lecturers holding professorships. They have various experiences at national and international scopes.

Most of them are graduates of renowned international universities and many have taken training and courses, and received international awards. They also conduct cross-country research

cooperations to provide solutions to global problems.

From the facts above, it can be concluded that the lecturers of UNAIR possess qualified global insights. Their dedication in the field of education, research, and community services (Tri Dharma or the Three Duties) is indisputable. They always focus on the university’s “Tri Dharma”.

There is no doubt that the students and the graduates of UNAIR are highly qualified. Not only are they famous at

the national level but have also gained many achievements in the international arenas. This is concrete evidence that they are not only "local champions".

Comparative study and academic staff exchanges as well administrative staff exchanges are also conducted frequently, not only with universities and institutions inside the country but also with the overseas ones. It means that UNAIR has carried out maximum efforts to become an internationally reputable university.

UNAIR’s cooperation with other universities as well as with institutions from both home and abroad has often been executed. Such partnership is substantial to promote the university and to show that UNAIR has always been trying to contribute immensely to education, research, and community services, both at national and global levels.

Grants in the forms of equipment or supporting infrastructures have also been signed between UNAIR and other institutions both within and outside the country. Exchange activities among

teaching staff, administrative staff, and students, as well as joint research, are regularly conducted, not only to solve local or domestic problems but also to find the solutions for the problems between and among countries.

UNAIR’s partnerships with global i n s t i t u t i o n s d e m o n s t r a t e t h e commitment of this campus to play a significant role in the advancement of humankind including to solve the crises at international level. To date, a lot of joint research has been conducted between academics of UNAIR and external parties, which took place in

Indonesia or in other countries.

The continuity of the partnership program is very essential and it should not merely be based on opportunistic desires. Instead, the partnership should be based on public welfare and be conducted massively and continuously.

N o r m s a n d v a l u e s i n t h e implementation of the partnership have lately been given more attention. The goal is to maintain the partnership. Thus, it can contribute optimally and is not just the pursuit of prestige.

Learning processes at UNAIR are based on a holistic perspective. It means that UNAIR focuses on all potential aspects of its educational activities, not just adheres to one particular potential.

Development of an individual’s key elements is executed carefully. UNAIR sharpens not only the academic elements but also the psychological, emotional, intellectual, creative, religious, and spiritual elements. Thus,

the results will reach all the potentials of an individual. With such holistic education, the development of each individual will be more complete. The learning atmosphere will be more comfortable, fun, democratic, and humanistic. Moreover, Indonesia is a country that upholds religious moral values. Holistic education that provides a large portion of religious point of views would make science more purposeful

and useful.

This kind of learning is based on a sense of togetherness. So, there is no desire to tackle or bring others down. On the contrary, all individuals try to create progress that can be achieved together. However, it does not mean that appreciation to those who excel is ruled out. UNAIR, in fact, provides an equal chance for each academic to contribute his/her best work.

UNAIR’s campus is located in the city center, surrounded by a number of other universities, both public and private. It means that the study atmosphere can be really felt. Boarding houses for students, researchers, lecturers and administrative staff are not far from the campus with representative facilities. The campus is also surrounded by central public facilities, for example sports centers, shopping and business centers, hospitals, police stations, markets, and many other facilities.

A number of buildings in UNAIR are classified as a cultural heritage protected by the government and they

contribute to the special uniqueness of t h e c a m p u s . I n f a c t , U N A I R i s acknowledged as a university that has colored Indonesian history.

Although located in the city center, UNAIR campuses do not neglect the greenery aspects which create beautiful and comfortable natural nuances. The existence of large green areas around the campuses of UNAIR can stimulate refreshing thoughts and ideas and can make students focus more in classes.

Meanwhile, egalitarian principle that can be clearly seen in the relationship between the lecturers and students also makes UNAIR a suitable

p l a c e t o s t u d y. T h i s s e n s e o f egalitarianism is because as a pluralistic nation Indonesia has been globally famous as a country that acknowledges and celebrates diversities which are not only related to the social classes, but also to ethnicities, religions, and so forth.

It is not surprising that students, researchers, lecturers, and staff who come from abroad always feel at home in UNAIR’s environment. This is because they feel appreciated and equitably positioned. When the study atmosphere is comfortable, learning productivity can be maximized.

All Indonesian universities hold a mandate called Tri Dharma or three duties. Tri Dharma consists of education, research and community services. As the i m p l e m e n t a t i o n o f Tr i D h a r m a , Universitas Airlangga continues to bring students and lecturers into the community. Through Community Service Program-Learning Together with the Community or abbreviated as KKN-BBM in Indonesian, students are encouraged to learn to identify and s o l v e p ro b l e m s e x i s t i n g i n t h e community.

Not only will this biannual event provide valuable experience for each student, but it will also provide an unforgettable memory for them. I n t e r a c t i o n b e t w e e n s t u d e n t s themselves and between students and the community will obviously add more color to their lives. Moreover, field super visors who accompany the students will also definitely share more knowledge and gain new insights.

Both Indonesian and foreign students participate in this community service program. Basically all students

under any circumstances go through this enjoyable phase.

Universitas Airlangga realizes that knowledge learned solely from the academic courses is useless if it is not applicable. Knowledge and social skills gained in the university should be able to help graduates to deal with problems in the community critically and systematically.

All students perform community services in a variety of fields such as education, health, productive economy, and environment, the activities of which last about one month.

This year, Community Service Program of Universitas Airlangga was held from January 11 to February 6, 2016 with the theme of “Cipta Karya”. This program, which invites students to learn together and to share new knowledge with the community about sanitation, drinking water supply, and housing, is a

cooperation between Universitas Airlangga and the Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing.

Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga started with the birth of the College of Economics, Surabaya (PTES) on September 15, 1954. Subsequently, on 17 November 1957, it held a cooperation with the Faculty of Economics of Universitas Indonesia in Jakarta and Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta. In addition to cooperation with national universities, PTES was able to conduct international relations with the Nederlandsche Economische Hogeschool (NEH) Rotterdam and a university in the Philippines.

Actually, at the beginning of the establishment of the PTES Foundation, the board had filed a request to the

President of the Republic of Indonesia in order to make PTES as part of Universitas Airlangga, but for several reasons, the process was inconclusive. Thanks to a persistent effort, finally the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science No.31/1961 which was issued on August 8, 1961, stated that since September 1, 1961, the PTES had transformed into the Faculty of Economics of Universitas Airlangga.

In M ay 2010, the Faculty of Economics transformed into the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB). This effort is evidence that UNAIR has committed to become a world-class campus that excels in all areas. The

decision on changing the name was driven by two reasons, namely rapid development of the branches of Economics and the requirements for o b t a i n i n g a n i n t e r n a t i o n a l accreditation.

One of the favorite programs at FEB is the Islamic Economics Academic Programs at the levels of undergraduate, masters, and doctorate. Currently, the faculty has an excellent track record at the national level. The graduates have proven to be successful bureaucrats, businessmen, officials, academics and practitioners in the field of economics and business in this country.

Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga commits to develop curriculum that fits the needs of stakeholders and hold the quality of learning process. Faculty of Economics and Business University Airlangga currently has 4 Departments for undergraduate level consisting of 4 S t u d y P r o g r a m s w h i c h h o l d accreditation from Indonesian National Accreditation Board for Higher Education.

As part of the efforts to improve the quality of learning process according to the international standard, Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga has been a member of international accreditation institution namely The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)

a n d i n p r o c e s s t o o b t a i n t h e accreditation. Besides, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas

Airlangga has already been in the final s t a g e t o o b t a i n i n t e r n a t i o n a l accreditation of The Alliance On Business Education And Scholarship For Tomorrow, a 21st century organization (ABEST21), an Asia Pacific accreditation institution of business schools.
