CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

In this part, I will explain several parts of introduction. There are research background, research questions, research objectives, significances of research, scope of study, and definition of term which is explain one by one in accordance with my research.

1.1 Research Background

Pronunciation is one's ability to understand knowledge of one's voice system and affect the meaning in the English context of one's speech (Ifadah & Aimah, 2012).

Good pronunciation, stressing, and intonation are some crucial factors in order to understand someone’s speech. In English, different sounds will have different meanings so it becomes the difficult for Indonesian learners to learn pronunciation.

Moreover, the differences among English and their mother tongue which adds the degree of difficulty in learning pronunciation.

There are two reasons why English is difficult to be mastered by students, especially in speaking skills. First, the students began to learn English by reading instead of speaking. Thus, they are accustomed to reading, not speaking whereas the writing in English is different from the pronunciation. They also feel ashamed and not confident to speak in English because they cannot pronounce it well or have a ‘medok’ accent. Therefore, many differences make students lose their motivation to learn pronunciation (Prasetiya et al., 2017).

The loss of motivation in learning pronunciation makes students less active and

class is caused by their lack of motivation. This causes students to be passive and afraid to speak in class. Whereas motivation is one aspect that is closely related to student achievement (Aimah & Ifadah, 2014). This is because the two things are related to each other. Therefore, an interesting media and not monotonous media is needed for students to learn pronunciation in order to increase students' motivation in learning English because when learning English, high motivation is one of the factors that affect mastery of English (Mulyadi, 2017).

Based on my pre observation at tenth grade in MA At-Tadzkir Kaliaren, students' motivation to learn pronunciation has a medium category with a percentage of 52.6 % while students’ difficulties in learning pronunciation have a high category with a percentage of 68.4%. Therefore, it can be concluded that students’ difficulties in learning pronunciation have a high category and students' motivation is in the medium category.

To conquer students' difficulties in learning pronunciation, they need media or learning methods that they like, besides that they can provide input or examples in pronunciation that are in accordance with the rules and are able to increase their motivation in learning pronunciation. As students said that they need a media that makes it easier for them to learn pronunciation. They need a media in the form of video or audio to make it easy to practice, such as video from Tik Tok or YouTube.

The reason why I chose and was interested to do the research about Tik Tok is that most of them have Tik Tok Application and are familiar with it. Besides that, I also found some videos which can help the students increase their pronunciation

skill and learning motivation on Tik Tok Application, such as

#pronunciationchallenge, #announcementchallenge, #duetchallenge, etc.

The Tik Tok application is a social network that can be used as a learning medium. However, Miarso reminds us that in using learning media, teachers are required to choose media that can meet children's learning needs, attract children's motivation, according to the child's age, and can convey messages from the teacher well (cited in Mahnun, 2012). The Tik Tok application can meet the learning needs students’ because it there are various features such as creating videos of 15 to 60 seconds in duration by adding filters or songs that make the video more interesting.

Besides, Tik Tok also has stitch and duet features without having to edit videos and many once videos that can increase students' knowledge.

Although the Tik Tok application was blocked in July 2018 because it contained negative content and was reopened in August 2018 with various considerations and new regulations, apart from these problems, look at the fact that the number of users has reached more than 10 million in Indonesia and the majority of school-age children (students), it can be seen that Tik Tok can be processed into interactive and fun educational media for students because the Tik Tok app is very good, loved and wanted by millennials, mostly children (Aji & Setiyadi, 2020).

Based on the problem and pre observation mentioned, I chose the topic about Examining How Tik Tok Application Shapes Students’ Pronunciation and Motivation in Learning English. Therefore, it is important to find out the effectiveness of the Tik Tok application which is booming among teenagers as a new learning medium.

1.2 Research Questions

Based on the topic above, the questions that will be discussed in this final project are:

1) How does Tik Tok Application shape students’ pronunciation?

2) How is students’ motivation in learning pronunciation through Tik Tok Application?

3) What are the factors affecting students’ pronunciation?

1.3 Research Objectives

Based on the research questions, the research objectives are formulated as follows:

1) To explain how Tik Tok Application shapes students’ pronunciation.

2) To describe students’ motivation in learning pronunciation through Tik Tok Application.

3) To mention and describe the factors affecting students’ pronunciation.

1.4 Significances of The Research

The significance of the research has several benefits, either theoretically or practically.

1. Theoretical Significance

a. The result of this research is expected to give a contribution about theory of students’ pronunciation and their learning motivation of learning pronunciation through Tik Tok Application. So, it can be the reference for other studies.

b. The research can give the information about aspects of students’

pronunciation and their learning motivation of learning speaking through Tik Tok Application in English teaching and learning process.

c. The result of this research can give the information, principally on the issue how the effect of Tik Tok Application on students’ pronunciation in learning pronunciation and their learning motivation.

2. Practical Significance

a. The result of this research can improve knowledge about students’

pronunciation in learning speaking and their learning motivation through Tik Tok Application.

b. The result of this research will give the teacher to recognize the effect of Tik Tok Application on students’ pronunciation in learning speaking and their learning motivation during the learning process.

c. The result of this research can be used as a reference and will be beneficial to plan and conduct an enhanced learning situation or other studies, especially study about the effect of Tik Tok Application on students’

pronunciation in learning speaking and their learning motivation during the learning process.

1.5 Scope of The Study

The scopes of the study are focused on explaining the effect of Tik Tok Application on students’ pronunciation and learning motivation based on ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) theory. This study is limited to the students of the tenth grade at MA At-Tadzkir Kaliaren Grobogan. In this study, I

will explain the effect of speaking challenge in Tik Tok Application on students’

pronunciation and learning motivation in teaching and learning process.

Furthermore, this study aims to explain and describe the effect of speaking challenge in Tik Tok Application on students’ pronunciation and learning motivation and to mention and describe the factors affecting Students’

Pronunciation in the process of teaching and learning.

1.6 Definition of Key Terms

In order to exploring the content of this study, the following are the definition of several key terms:

1. Tik Tok Application

Tik Tok is a social network that is popular among teenagers and has the features of designing, editing, sharing short videos, choosing the filters you want to apply, along with trending songs now (Hernández-Serrano et al., 2022).

2. Pronunciation

Pronunciation is the production of English sounds that are learned by correcting them when they are produced inaccurately and repeating sounds (Gilakjani, 2016).

3. Motivation

Motivation is one of the significant factors that prompt second language learners to achieve a high level of proficiency (Alqahtani, 2021).

4. Learning Motivation

Learning motivation is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to guide individual learning goal and efforts on the learning goal by teachers in the learning process (Lin, Chen,& Liu, 2017).

1.7 Outline of Study

To find out what will be discussed in each chapter, here are the grids of each chapter:

Chapter one is an introduction which contains background of the study, research questions, research objectives, significance of the research, the scope of study, definition of key terminologies, and the outline of the study.

Chapter two is review related literature contains the definition of Tik Tok Application, the features of Tik Tok Application, definition of pronunciation, factors that affect pronunciation learning, goals of pronunciation teaching,

Chapter three is research methodology. It consists of research design, subject of the study, method and instrument of data collection, data analysis and research procedure.

Chapter four is research findings and discussion. It consists of research finding including the effect of speaking challenge in Tik Tok application on students’

pronunciation, the students’ motivation in learning pronunciation through Tik Tok Application, and the last was factors affecting students’ pronunciation.

Chapter five is conclusions, which presents the conclusions of the study and
