proposal entitle “The Speaking Ability of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA

Key Words: Speaking Ability, Fishbowl Discussion.

Speaking is one of elements of human daily activities. The writer can share ideas and thoughts with other people by speaking. A smooth interaction between people can take place in that way. Speaking skill is taught to students to make them capable of communicating by using English correctly. In fact, a teacher has less motivation to give the students’ special treatment in teaching speaking.

This research is to find out the answer from the statement of the problem; First, “can Fishbowl Discussion improve student’s speaking ability of the tenth grade students of SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2013/2014?”. Second, “What are the strengths and the weaknesses of using Fishbowl Discussion when it is applied at the tenth grade students of SMA NU AL Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 to improve students’ speaking ability?”

This is a classroom action research. The research was conducted in SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus. Subject of the research is the grade X-1 in second semester. The material used is descriptive text. The writer uses some instrument in this research. Observation and achievement test. There were four steps in conducting the Classroom Action Research i.e. planning, acting, observing and reflecting.

The result of this research shows that the improvements happen in every cycle. In cycle I, the average score of achievement test of speaking ability by using Fishbowl Discussion technique is 71.06 then the average from 71.06 into percentage to be 71.06%. In cycle II, the average score of achievement test of speaking ability by using Fishbowl Discussion technique in cycle II is 81.46 then the average score from 81.46 into percentage to be 81.46% so the speaking ability in cycle II is very satisfied. The writer concluded that Fishbowl Discussion as a technique of teaching English had proven effective in improving the ability of

English speaking of the students of SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus in academic year

2013/2014.

Based on the result of the research above, the writer can conclude that the use of Fishbowl Discussion can improve students’ speaking ability at the Tenth

Grade Students of SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus in the academic 2013/2014. First,

Berbicara adalah salah satu element dari beberapa aktivitas manusia sehari-hari. Penulis dapat membagi ide dan pemikiran kita dengan orang lain dengan berbicara. Interaksi yang lancar diantaranya orang dapat menggunakan kearah itu. Keterampilan berbicara diajarkan kepada siswa untuk membuat mereka mampu berkomunikasi dengan bahasa Inggris yang benar. Faktanya, guru kurang memiliki motivasi untuk memberikan perlakuan khusus kepada siswa dalam pengajaran berbicara.

Penelitian ini mempunyai beberapa tujuan untuk menemukan jawaban dari pernyataan dari sebuah masalah adakah this research has a purpose to find out menjawab dari pernyataan masalah; Pertama, “Dapatkah Fishbowl Discussion

meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas X SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus di

tahun 2013/2014?”. Kedua, “kekuatan dan kelemahan apa dari penggunaan Fishbowl Discussion ketika diaplikasikan pada murid-murid kelas X SMA NU Al Ma’ruf di tahun 2013/2014 untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa?”.

Ini merupakan penelitian tindak kelas (Classroom Action Research). Penelitian ini di SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus. Subject penelitian adalah kelas X1 pada semester kedua. Materi yang digunakan adalah descriptive text. Penulis menggunakan beberapa instrument di dalam penelitian ini. Yang digunakan adalah observation and achievement test menggunakan fishbowl discussion. Ada empat langkah dalam melakukan Penilitian Tindakan Kelas yaitu perencanaa, pelaksanaa, observasi, dan refleksi.

Hasil dari penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan pada setiap cycle. Pada cycle I, nilai rata-rata test kemampuan berbicara menggunakan Fishbowl Discussion adalah 71.06 kemudian rata-rata dari 71.06 kedalam presentase yaitu 71.06%. Pada cycle II nilai rata-rata test kemampuan berbicara menggunakan Fishbowl Discussion adalah 81.46 kemudian rata-rata dari 81.46 kedalam presentase yaitu 81.46 %. Jadi kemampuan berbicara pada cycle II sangat puas. Penulis dapat menarik kesimpulan bahwa pengajaran menngunakan Fishbowl Discussion untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris terbukti efektif untuk

meningkatkan penguasaan berbicara murid-murid SMA MU Al Ma’ruf Kudus di

tahun pelajaran 2013/2014.
