ABSTRACT
The title of this paper is “The Analysis of the Main Characters In Seré Prince Halverson’s Novel The Underside of Joy”. In this paper, the writer discusses about the main characters. The main characters in this novel are Paige as the antagonist and Ella Benne as the protagonist. The writer is interested to analyzes that novel because the story is emotionally complex and the characterization are unique. This novel tells about a step-mother, Ella Benne, who loves her step-children like her birth-children. She loves them so much because she is a young widow who can not birth a baby. Meanwhile, the birth-mother of the children, Paige, has contrast characterization with their step-mother. She gets Schizophrenia that makes her get depression, so she can not take care of her children. She leaves her children while they are too young. The description of the main characters are clear, because the characterization of one character is explained in one chapter in this novel. In finishing this paper, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method, and the writer also uses library research because there are many literature books must be read to interpret the data. Then the data is analyzed and the writer makes the conclusion.

Kertas karya ini berjudul “The Analysis of the Main Characters In Seré Prince Halverson’s Novel The Underside of Joy”. Penulis membahas tentang tokoh utama. Tokoh utamanya yaitu, Paige sebagai tokoh antagonis dan Ella Benne sebagai tokoh protagonis. Penulis tertarik untuk menganalisa novel ini karena ceritanya yang rumit secara emosional dan karakternya unik. Novel ini menceritakan tentang seorang ibu tiri, Ella Benne, yang menyayangi anak tirinya seperti anak kandungnya. Dia sangat menyayangi mereka karena dia adalah seorang janda muda yang tidak bisa punya anak. Sementara itu, ibu kandung dari anak-anak tersebut, Paige, bersikap sebaliknya dan berlawanan dengan ibu tiri mereka. Dia menderita schizoprenia yang membuat dia menjadi depresi sehingga tidak bisa merawat anaknya. Dia pergi meninggalkan anaknya ketika mereka masih sangat kecil. Penggambaran karakter cukup jelas pada novel ini , karena karakter satu tokoh dijelaskan dalam satu bab. Dalam mengerjakan kertas karya ini, penulis menggukan metode deskriptif qualitative, dan penulis juga menggunakan penelitian perpustakaan karena ada banyak buku literature yang harus dibaca untuk menafsirkan data. Kemudian data dianalisa dan penulis menarik kesimpulan.
