1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
In a dictionary of literary terms and literary theory (1977:Perface), the
main definition of literary term thus: “of or pertaining to, or of nature of,
literature, polite learning, or books and written compositions; pertaining to that
kind of written composition which has value on account of it’s qualities of form.
Using the literary terms as extremely important because they are the medium
through which a reader interacts with a piece of literature. Literature includes
plays, essay, novels, poetry, and short stories.
A novel usually tells of human life in their interaction with the
environment and each other. In a novel, the authors make every effort to direct
with the reader to the images of the reality of life through the stories contained in
the novel. Holderness says that novel is attempting to give the reader the
impression that it is “emanating life” in every direct way.
Characters have conversations with each other to enable parts the reader to
learn about whom they are, what role they are playing and about the events of the
novel. Characters are the persons in a narrative of dramatic work of at such as
novel, play, or film. A novel can, but doesn’t need to, have many characters. In
novel, character can be differentiated into several kinds based on point of view of
the appellation to be done. Identify character traits the main character displays. An
author can reveal character traits in a description of the character's appearance or
1.2 Objective of the study
The writer wants to know more about the main characters that can be
found in Olen Steinhauer’s novel the tourist: Milo Weaver, Tina Weaver, Janet
Simmons and Primkov. What they do and how they look like.
1.3 Scope of the study
It is important to make the limitation of the study to avoid the readers of
getting confused. Olen steinhauer described the character in such wonderful ways
that keep the readers guessing ang guessing. Character is one of the most
important elements of fiction; the writer is interested in studying it, especially on
the main characters. The writer wants to describe physical appearance of the
characters, to explain the attitude of the characters through what they say and do
in the novel.
1.4 Significance of the study
The finding of this study expected to be significant to the readers of
literature, because they can show the inspiration, opinion and idea through their
reading. From this paper, i hope the readers wiil get some knowledge about
intrinsic elements in the novel The Tourist, especially about the main characters.
Then this paper can improve the English Diploma Student’s interest in studying
2. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CHARACTER AND DIVISION OF CHARACTER
2.1 Character
One of the most important aspect of the major novel is the interaction of
characters contras are important: such contrast make both figures more real; but
the character also act on one another and develop as a result of these interactions;
which is oten most of what a main stream novel is about. Character in a novel is
not as puzzling as character in real life; a novel is short: it is a work of art, so it’s
selective character in novel rather as we do in real life; from people’s actions,
from what they say about themselve, from what other say about them.
Character is a person who is responsiblefor the throughts and action within
a story, poem, or other literature. Characters are extremely important because they
are the medium through which a reader interacts with a piece of literature. Every
character has his or her own personality, which a creative author uses to assist in
forming the plot of a story or creating a mood. The different attitudes,
mannerisms, and even appearances of characters can greatly influence the other
major elements in a litetary work, such as theme , setting, and tone. With this
understanding of the character, a reader can become more aware of other aspect of
literature, such as symbolism, giving the reader a more complete understanding of
the work. The character is one the most important tools available to the author.
Authors take an indirect approach by indicating how their characters look and act,
The authors have imparted some inspiration to the readers for the time
being; as a rule, an address or an essay which is nothing inspirational. Most of all
allusions to character by orators of all descriptions are either platitude, such as
“character is a great word, one of the greatest “(hitchcock) or character is the
governing element in life and is above genius” (saunders), or else cryptic
expressions dressed in metaphors that becloud the issue. This is the following:
“character is impulse that has been rained down into steady continuance”
(parkhurst).
The glossary of term defines a character as a person presented in a
dramatic or narrative work and characterization is the process by which a writer
makes that character seem real to the reader.
A character is a fictional person in a story, and readers’ first reactions to
him or her are usually based on their subjective capity to emathize with the
character,s experience. A character is often revealed through his or her action,
which provides readers with clues about the character’s personality, motives, and
expectations.
2.2 Division of character
Main character and peripheral character
The character is the part of intrinsic element in the novel that is firstly
explored by the writer because it takes essential role to display any behavior of
each character in the novel. Referring to their degree of playing role in the novel,
they can be grouped into two parts such as main and peripheral character. Because
focus only concentrares to explain the definition about main character. According
to Nurgiyantoro, main character is
“Tokoh utama adalah tokoh yang diutamakan penceritaanya dalam novel yang bersangkutan. Ia merupakan tokoh yang paling banyak diceritakan, baik sebagai pelaku kejadian maupun yang dikenal kejadian” (Nurgiyantoro, 2005: 176-177)
Through quatation above, it can be mentioned that main character is kind
of character, which often shows up repeatedly as if it dominates every parts of the
events in the novel. Regarding to yje meaning of active-passive in doing
something, both of them can act as a subject that has capability in doing
something or as an object that suffers the impact from teartment done by the
subject or circumstances. In the other words, main characters does not only act
subject but also as object. This kind of character plays important role in the novel
and it cannot be ignored. The Main Character of a story represents the audience’s
personal perspective into the story. Through this perspective, we the audience get
to experience what it would be like personally to experience the story’s problems.
The Main Character may or may not be the Protagonist. Protagonist describes a
function, whereas the Main Character describes a perspective or point-of-view.
At the end of every complete story, the Main Character will be faced with
an important decision: either continues to solve problems the way he or she
always has, or change their approach and attempt to solve the problem differently.
The Main Character Resolve determines what their answer will be. If they
maintain their approach they are said to be Steadfast. If they adopt a new
because during the moment of crisis, when their Resolve is most tested, they drop
their approach to solving the story’s problems and adopt a new one. This change
in no way guarantees a success. It simply describes a character who trades their
old paradigm for a new one.
The Impact Character within a complete story provides an alternative
paradigm that challenges the Main Character to reexamine his or her own
point-of-view. This can be, but most often isn’t, the Antagonist of a story. By the end of
the story, either the Impact Character’s influence will have won out and the Main
Character will alter their paradigm, or their influence will have strengthened the
Main Character’s resolve and the Impact Character will alter their paradigm.
Thus, this character is essential for a story to have meaning.
Characterization is the means an author uses to describe or develop a
character for the reader. The brevity of a short story insures that there will be few
characters. The main character is the only character that is really developed, so
characterization in a short story is fairly easy to analyze. This is instruction to find
the main characters:
1. Name the main character. Sometimes in a short story, the main character
will be the only character. Other times there will be a few characters but
only one who is mentioned repeatedly throughout the story. Your analysis
of characterization needs to focus on the main character.
2. List the main character's physical attributes. As you read the story, keep a
running list of any physical descriptions of the main character. The author
things about his appearance. Since the story is short, the author won't have
time to describe everything about the main character. Therefore, the details
he does reveal are important and will probably give you clues about the
character. For example, if the main character is described as having a
sinister smile, the writer is not only using alliteration to color his writing,
he is pointing out that there is something evil about the character
3. Identify character traits the main character displays. An author can reveal
character traits in a description of the character's appearance or in how he
acts and what other characters in the story say about him. Characterization
in a short story is usually somewhat one-dimensional. The main character
may be evil, unpleasant and unhappy or helpful, caring and giving. She
won't usually display contradicting qualities.
4. Consider the source of your information when deciding how accurate it is.
What another character says about the main character may be more
reliable than what he says about himself.
5. Notice how you learned about the main character. Writers have different
ways of describing a character in a short story. They can use narration to
describe the character, dialogue to reveal her attributes, or some
Protagonist and antagonist characters
There are two order important terms to keep in mind of description people:
protagonist and antagonist. Protagonist is the major character with whom we
generally sympathize. A protagonist is considered to be the main character or lead
figure in a novel, play, story, or poem. It is referred to as the “hero” of a work.
The antagonist is the character with who the protagonist is in conflict, generally
not a sympathetic character. This is the character driving the story forward; the
one leading the charge towards the Story Goal. This character may or may not be
the Main Character of the story. Either way, the main function of the Protagonist
is to Pursue.
The antagonist doesn’t necessarily have to be a person. It could be death,
the devil, an illness, or any challenge that prevents the main character of virtue in
a literary work where the protagonist represent evil.
2.3 Types of characters
Acccording to Karen Bernardo, characterization in literature; in fictional
literature, authors use many different types of characters to tell their stories.
Different types of characters fulfill different roles in the narrative process and
with a little bit of analysis.
The essential function of character is to make the story in the novel
meaningful. Therefore, characterization plays important role in giving the main or
peripheral character selected behaviour or typical of personality. In his book
Aspect of the novel, E.M. Foster define two basic types of characters, their
characters and around characters. According to E.M Foster, the definition about
flat character describes below Foster’s most important contribution to the aeshetic
of the novel: the distinction between ‘flat’ and ‘round’ characters.
“ Flat characters are constructed round a singel idea or quality and can be expressed in a single sentence; round characters are multi-faceted and unpreictable. For foster, the test of a round character is whether it is capablle of surprising in a convincing way both flat and round charcters acn coexist in the some novel. Flat characers have advantage of being easily recognized and convenient for their creators (E.M. Foster, 1993:47:54)
Based on quatition above, it can be said that flat characters have two basic
personalities and they do not make any significant surprise in the story of the
novel. The personalities and they do not make any significant surprise in the story
of the novel. The personality mind, behavior and motivation of flat character can
be easily known in a period time of story. Eventhough this kind of character is
plain and has tendency to be monotone, it can make memorable impression into
the reader’s mind by the hands of an expert author through individualizing detail
of appearance, gesture or speech.
In quotation above, it can be explained that round character requires
comprehensive exploration and even needs separated analysis to reveal its
possibilities of actual pesonality, mind or behavior as a subject or object in the
novel.
A special kind f of flat charcteris stock character, it still remains the part
Of flat character, which the personality or behaviour or motivation has been
clearly defined in the begining of the story telling. According to Laurrene Perrine,
“Stok charcters the stereotyped figure who has occurred so often in fiction that his nature is immediately known; the strong silent sheriff, the brilliant detective of eccentric habits, the mad scientist who performs fiendish experiment on living human beings, the beautiful international spy of mysterious background, the cruel stepmother”. (perrine, 1985: 68)
Regarding to the previous quotation, stock character isis instantly
recognizable by the reader from the beginning until the end of story because it
often occurs in the novel. Some of stock characters are found very often in
inferior fiction because they require neither imagination or observations on the
part.
2.4 Character Development
The development of character probably changes the personality, behavior
or mind of character. This development of character could be irreversible,
reversible or there are even no changes at all from the beginning until the end of
story. This character development can be classified into two groups, such as static
and dynamic character. According to Laurrene, Perrine, their definition are
presented below,
“The Static Character is the same sort of person at the end of
the story as at the beginning.” (Perrine, 1985 : 69)
Based on quotation above, this character relativity stays the same from the
beginning until the end of the story. It never changes because of the influence of
event changing or disorder inter-relationship with other character
for better or for worse; but it is something important and basic: it is more than a change in condition or a minor change in opinion. “ (Perrine, 1985 : 69)
In the other hand, the meaning of dynamic character is opposite to the
static character. A little change from exact character whether it comes in early,
middle or the end of story is fairly enough to state that character is dynamic. The
dynamic of character does not measure from the quantity of changing such as big
or just a little but it comes from the significant difference of character behavior in
some events. Therefore, the dynamic character is complex, many-sided and need
full analyses to explain.
Charcterization dominates in novel more often than any other element.
Human nature seeks exciting adventure and simulating conflicts to satisfy our
unlimited curiosity; but without characterization, an author would have to weave
into his books. Characterization fulfills our need to understand each other and to
discover ourselves through fictional characters. These needs motived us read. The
longer the narrative, the greater and more complex characterzation can become.
1. Several major characters may be developed in a novel.
The very length of the novel permits the presentation of several
characters that are fully developed in almost all aspect of their nature;
whereas, the short story must limit the number of characters to one or
two and develop only those traits essential to the theme and action of
the narrative. The length of the novel futher allows the author to
present several protagonist involved in various conflicts, limited only
2. Characters are revealed in many ways.
He may use the dialogue, actions, thoughts, feelings of the protagonist;
or he may use the thoughts, feelings, words, actions of several or all of
the other major and minor characters towards the protagonist and the
antagonist.
The reader would prefer to analyze the interpret he characters for
himself as the author brings characters to life through their actions,
word and feellings. This enable us to see, hear and know the characters
for ourselves so that we might draw our conclusions.
3. The role of minor characters is multiple
Minor characters play an important role in helping us to know and
understand the major characters. They may serve as confidants to the
protagonist, or as foils for developing character by contrast, the may
provide local color, necessary to understanding the way of life of the
major characters, or as sources of information to help develop the plot.
They fill in these scene provide humor or drama, and comment on the
action to add variety to point of view.
4. Dynamic change is necessary in the protagonist.
The development or dynamic changes in major characters may be far
greater and more complex in the novel than in the short story. Again,
the changes in character may be the results of a lifetime of experiences
and motivations. Whatever the dynamic change may be the amount of
will be sufficient to result in character development that is believable.
(see glossary : dynamic change)
5. Motivations are essential to character development.
Motivations are the reasons a character for the things he says and does,
and for the dynamic change which he may undergo. His reactions
reveal his character through his responses to conflicts, events, and the
people around him.
Characterization is the means an author uses to describe or develop a
character for the reader. The brevity of a short story insures that there will be few
characters. The main character is the only character who is really developed, so
characterization in a short story is fairly easy to analyze.
The author must provide characters with motivations and responses
that are within their experience and nature. For example, if a man who is always
tolerant and gentle suddenly becomes violent and cruel without reasons or
motivations that are convincing, we feel deceived. All motivations and reactions
must be consistent and believable for the given character. The degree os success
an author has in motivating his characters to change in some aspect of their nature
is the main criterion in estimating the author’s ability as a writer.
3. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS
Adaptation of the Olen Steinhauer novel “The Tourist” is a contemporary
international thriller about spy who risks everything to reveal a conspiracy after
he’s accused of a murder he didn’t commit.
There are two main characters that appeared in this novel. They are called
as the main characters because they are the most important role in the story. The
main characters are as follows:
3.1 Milo Weaver
Milo Weaver is an American in thirty five years of age. He is handsome.
He has tall body posture about 180 cm. He has green eyes.He has big hand like us
a pianist but it isn’t true, Milo Weaver who formerly worked as a special agent of
the CIA spy.
“The passport gave her his particulars: five foot eleven. Born June 1970-thirty-one year sold. Piano player? No-American passports don't list occupations. She peered up at him and spoke in her unsure accent: "Mr. Charles Alexander?" (Olen Steinhauer, the Tourist, part the end of tourist p.2)
Milo is good man. He is more important other people than his
self. Like us the incident when he met his wife’s Tina Weaver.
the Rio Terra Barba Fruttariol was having a baby. Help was promised. He hung up. His blood was no longer a network of rivulets on the ground; it formed an elongated pool.(Olen Steinhauer, the tourist, p.4)
He can speak some languages Russian, France, Italy. He is mentally unhinged by
his life as a tourist. He is sustained by booze and amphetamines. Milo has a
family; he has a wife and a daughter. He really loves her family than everything.
He is very emotional if someone to bring them into his problem.
"No need to bring them into this," Milo said, then let go. (Olen Steinhauer, the tourist, (Olen Steinhauer, the tourist, Problems of the intrnational tourist trade part, p.3)
Milo always saves you the information that he can. He always thinks
before making decisions, when the CIA agents accused her friend Angela Yates
did the dark for its own operations. Milo did not immediately believe it, he
sought the truth about what happened and until the unexpected happens. Angela
Yates died and Milo is suspected.
“Also, you tell me you know nothing about Angela Yates's murder, but the story I've just described suggests something different. It suggests that you came to Paris and worked with Mr. Einner until your job was completed. As soon as Angela was dead, you left." She paused. "If I'm missing something, please let me know” (Problems of the intrnational tourist trade p.31)
Milo Weaver who formerly worked as a special agent of the CIA spy. He
was placed in the Communist countries of Eastern Europe to disguise as a tourist
named Charles Alexander. As a tourist spy, Charles is a trained agent who is able
“Milo grimaced. He was going to have to go through the motions. At least a change of language would hide their talk from these Tennessee boys. In Russian, he answered, "I'm Milo Weaver, of the Central Intelligence Agency."
Skill espionage will soon be working when entering an area. Such as
when entering the city park, Charles will soon make a brief plan of the area along
with the easiest way out, and do not forget, registering the weapons that can be
used there. For the latter, Charles trained to use the objects around him as
weapons, such as using lawn chairs, pens, letter opener tool, even a tree branch to
hang. Milo is such a great character. He had never been a nervous agent. He'd
been the best agent
Milo had always felt comfortable in large airports. It wasn't that he loved to fly-that, particularly after the Towers, had become an increasingly unbearable experience with its various secure levels of undress. The only things he enjoyed forty thousand feet above sea level were the cleverly packaged airline meals and the day's music choices on his iPod. P1
His life is different when he has family, without them he can’t do everything.
“The betrayal makes him desperate for something stable in all this, and the only thing that comes to him is his wife and daughter, who he cannot see, touch, or talk to. And without that family, it might as well be 2001 again, him standing on the edge of a Venetian canal contemplating suicide. Without his family, there was no reason not to jump”.
When he was questioned he admitted something that never execution of.
That's what makes it stuck
me. He lied to the Company." Then he pushed it further: "Because I loved that man, and he used me.
All the events alleged to him. Milo used as bait. But it’s just illusion. He
tried to seek the truth above all the events that happened. The truth, three lies, and
some omissions. That was all Milo knew.On the accused as the killer his friend
and head of the CIA agents who he considers his own father had him trapped. His
families had not believed him and reveal the past Milo.
Milo's past uncovered through the story of Milo's grandfather William Perkins. It's
put a halt to her career, and Tina doesn’t believe him, he might have ruined his
marriage.
All the incidents are the end. All problems can solve. But it isn’t true. This
is beginning incident.
“He'd thought it was the end, but he'd been wrong. All of it-all the things that mattered, they were just beginning.”(Olen Steinhauer, The tourist, part the beginning of tourism p.2)
3.2 Tina weaver
Tina weaver born in Nome. Her father’s Miguel crowe and her mother’s
Hanna crowe. Tina weaver is a beautiful woman; she has green eyes and has a
scatter of long hair. She is a great woman.
Tina has a daughter from relationship with Patrik. But Patrik leaved her when she
was pregnant. Tina is good woman, she had forgiven patrik.
"Look, Pat. I could bitch about how you left me when I was pregnant and needed you most, but I'm not angry about that anymore. The way things ended up… I'm happy. Milo treats us well; he loves Stephanie like his own. Do you understand what I'm saying?" P.6
Tina is not easy angry. She came from a family where you didn't hide your anger,
because by venting it you stole its power.
She came from a family where you didn't hide your anger, because by venting it you stole its power. That's how the Crowes had always done it in Austin, and what was good enough for Texas was good enough for anywhere. (Problems of the the international tourist trade part P.8)
When she met Milo, her life to be change. She is very happy. Milo loves stephanie
like his own. For her it’s wonderful life.
“Her feelings intensified when they landed at LaGuardia, then took the airport shuttle into Brooklyn. The streets were claustrophobic, and each familiar storefront was another accusation from her old life. That was how she was beginning to see her life: old and new. The old life was wonderful because of its ignorance; the new life was terrible because of its knowledge. Problems of the international tourist trade part ,p11)
She loves Milo, she always believes him. But when the truth happens to make tina
hated Milo.
Tina knew that she would tell Simmons everything. Milo was a liar, and
at that moment she hated him.
3.3 Janet Simmon
Janet Simmon is Homeland Security agent. She had a fluid, engaging
interview styles. Simmons looks clever and attractive features. The ways she
positioned her beauty were supposed to close the psychological distance between
interviewer and interviewee, making it less adversarial.
She leaned forward a lot, hands open except when she pulled a strand of dark hair behind her ear. Early thirties, Milo guessed. Sharp, attractive features marred only by a right eye that wandered. The ways she positioned her beauty were supposed to close the psychological distance between interviewer and interviewee, making it less adversarial. She even pretended not to notice his stink.”p.5
She might have been an attractive young woman if she hadn't put so much
effort into appearing otherwise. Dark hair pulled severely back, some navy suit
with too-loose slacks. Simmons looks clam but she is looking for everything all
what she wants. The every thing is doing to get it.
“Each time, though, Simmons would cut in: "Maybe I don't, Terence. You know how uninformed Homeland is." Then, to Milo: "Please. Go on." She wanted to know everything.” p.10
She is looking for the truth about Milo, who is he, what are he doing and all
incidents to join his. First of all she met Milo when accused of killing prisoner
who had been looking for. That's when he always wanted to know what had been
3.4 Yevgency primakov
He is russian, He was tall, fiftyish, with wavy gray hair and a bright smile.
He has eyebrown Despite heavy eyes that matched Milo, he had a youthful vitality
about him.
"What do I know?" Then he conceded he might know something: "Way I see it, the boy didn't know Minnie, did he? This old woman shows up and wants him to come home with her. On the other hand, there's a Ruskie who says he's his father. You know how those Russians are. They'll convince you the sky's red. ((Problems of the international tourist trade p.21)
He is a Russian mafia engaged in selling petroleum to other countries. He
is a businessman who does not have permission from the government. Especially
Milo CIA agents spying on him for theft committed a traitorous CIA agent and
worked with her. Not only the CIA agent but Homeland security agent did the
same thing they were investigating.
But all get the result, it was during this time he was the biological father of Milo.
“Primakov thought about his answer before speaking: "Milo Weaver is my son. I can love him, yes. I can make sure my parentage doesn't ruin his career. But I also know that, as my son, he has my own limitations.( Problems of the international tourist trade part, p.3)”
Milo in the investigation he helped mastermind the murder of all the
events that have been blamed on Milo.
He stated although he did not care for but she is more familiar with Milo from
4. CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
4.1 Conclusions
After having analyzed the main characters of the novel, the writer would
like to conclude, as follows:
1. Obviously the tourist was big on action, and surprisingly it was also very
focused on the current political climate. The author clearly spent a lot of
time researching the novel, putting clues early on, and editing to create fast
dialogue.
2. There are four main characters in the novel the tourist, namely Milo
weaver, Tina weaver, Janet Simmons and Yevgency primakov. They are
portrayed in what they are saying and what they are doing. One of the
main characters, Milo is such great character. In many ways he is the
