ABSTRACT
Bioplastic is plastic that can be used as the common conventional plastic, but has the tendency to decompose by microorganism activities and transform to water and carbon dyoxyde. Starch is natural polymer that is used as matrix in the production of bioplastics. The addition of filler can improve the mechanical properties of bioplastics. Production of bioplastics refers to the melt intercalation method, which does not need the addition of a solvent to the production of bioplastics. In this experiment, the mass of cassava peel starch used was 10 gram, using microcrystalline cellulose content Avicel PH101 with variation of 0; 2; 4; and 6% (wt / wt), while the volume of sorbitol used was 20; 25; and 30% (wt). Heating temperature of bioplastics’ solution was 76 ° C. Bioplastics were physical and chemical analyzed, including FT-IR, SEM, RVA, tensile strength, elongation at break, water absorption, and density analysis. The results of FT-IR analysis indicated the expansion of the group C=O in the range of 1118.71 and 1168.86 cm-1 as well as the expansion of the OH group in the range of 2870.08 and 2989.66 cm-1. FTIR analysis results does not indicate a new functional group. SEM result shows the morphology of bioplastics with MCC filler poorly dispersed in bioplastic inducing agglomeration. The analysis of cassava peel starch results in starch content of 75,9061%, amylose content of 25,1921%, amylopectin content of 49,9139%, moisture content of 9,45%, ash content of 1,5%, fat content of 1,58%, protein content of 4,25%, gelatinization temperature 76,685 oC with viscosity peak of 4225,5 Cp and viscosity breakdown of 2566,5 cP. From this research, bioplastic with the best and optimum characteristics is found at microcrystalline cellulose content 6% and sorbitol content 20%, with a value of 9,12 MPa tensile strength, percent extension at break of 0,29%, the density of 1,05 gr/cm3 and water uptake of 40,18%.
