ERRORS ANALYSIS ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

STUDENTS’ WRITING

Yutta Natasya Dyarenggasti

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the types of grammatical errors found in the Faculty

of Information and Technology students‟ writing. The data were collected from 20 essays

entitled “My Experience”. In analyzing the data, I used steps suggested by Corder (1974) as cited in Ellis and Barkhuizen (2005). First, a native speaker teacher helped identify the grammatical errors in the participants work. Second, the errors would be classified based on Linguistic Taxonomy proposed by Politzer and Ramirez (1973) as cited in Dulay, Burt and Krashen (1982). Third, based on the identification of errors, each category of errors was counted to find each propotion. Finally, each category of errors was explained and discussed. The result of the study show that English tenses (190 errors or 30.60%) were found to be the most common grammatical errors followed by errors in articles (155 errors or 24.96%), prepositions (104 errors or 16.75%), singular/plurals (60 errors or 9.66%), subject-verb agreements (57 errors or 9.18%), possessives (32 errors or 5.15%), and pronoun (23 errors or 3.70%). This research concluded by discussing the pedagogical implication.
