GITA UMARRIYANTI: THE INFLUENCE OF USING THE C’nS JUNIOR MAGAZINE ON THE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILL AT THE FIRST YEAR OF MTs NEGERI JATIBARANG

As we know that speaking activity involves the skills of thinking, receiving the information, and building understanding or comprehension. In speaking class, the students find the problems, such as in pronunciation, in vocabulary, spelling, etc. The students regard that speaking skill as the measurement of knowing a language, much more than the other abilities, like, reading, writing, and listening.

In learning speaking skill, the students at the first year of MTs Negeri Jatibarang often find some problems. The problem frequently found is that their native language causes them difficult to use the foreign language. The other reason is because of lack of motivation to practice it in daily conversation. They are also too shy and afraid to take a part. Many factors can cause the problem of the students speaking skills, namely the students‘ interest, the material, and the media among other including the technique in teaching English. So, in this research, the writer tries use C‘nS Junior magazine as media in learning process.

The aims of this research are to know the influence of using the C‘nS Junior magazine on the students‘ English speaking skill at the first year of MTs Negeri Jatibarang.

The method of this research is quantitative approach which is the research approved statistically. The techniques for collecting data in this research are pre test, and post test. The analysis use pre-experimental design. Exactly the research use one-group pre test – post test design, it gives treatment to a group of sample and pre test-post test to compare the differences between before and after treatment.

After the data has been analyzed, the writer conclude that the students‘ result of the influence of using C‘nS Junior magazine on the students‘ English skill at the first year of MTs Negeri Jatibarang that t test > t table or 8.61 > 2.02. It means that Ha is accepted that using the C‘nS Junior magazine influences towards the students‘ English speaking skill.

First off all I would like to thank to Allah for His mercy and blessing. May invocation and safety always be given upon the prophet Muhammad SAW) peace be upon him), his family, his companion, and his followers up to the end of the world.

This thesis is entitled in ―THE INFLUENCE OF USING THE C’nS JUNIOR MAGAZINE ON THE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILL AT THE FIRST YEAR OF MTs NEGERI JATIBARANG. Presented to the Study Program of English Education of Faculty of Tarbiyah IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Islamic Scholar in English Education (S.Pd.I)

The writer believes that this thesis is far from being perfect, however, for the writer this is the best work she has ever made. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. The Background of the Problem

Language has an important role in human life. Between language and human life is just like body and soul. It means that they can not separate from one to another. People wherever they live they use language to communicate with the others. Language is one of the most useful tools we have as humans. We can not express our feelings, thought, and ideas without it. It means that people can communicate and interact with the others through language.

There are thousand of language in the world, and English is one of the language that used and spoken in many countries, because English as International languages. So, there are many people who want to master English, because it can help us when we are going to interact with other people, especially who come from all over the world, although there are various dialect between one and another.

Generally, people use language in communication among others through speaking and writing activities. Speaking activities happened in every certain situation such as in telephoning, discussing, doing conversation among the family and friends at school.

We know from the statement above that language as a tool of communication can be used to express ideas or feeling for different situations. For example in teaching learning situation, the teacher and students interact each other in teaching learning process. Especially in learning speaking, a student should keep on trying to learn from many sources. The students should be able to be more active on the lesson in class. Encouraging them to speak is the best way to do.

In English teaching, we know about four competences they are listening, speaking, reading, and writing skill. Speaking is one of four basic skills. It is very important in teaching and learning English. To most people, speaking is the most difficult part when learning a foreign language. Although everyone knows that the best way to speak a language fluently is to practice speaking, as much as possible but not many people can do this.

According to Rinda Nurstdinova, ―The factors of speaking ability such as pronunciation, grammar, listening comprehension of interlocutor, vocabulary and self confidence‖. Speaking is very different from another

because it happens in real time and in spoken English, we can not edit and revise what we say thus speaking is natural.

language. Second, the way of speaking is often taught makes the students bored. Third, certainly for parents and environment have to cooperate to make students realize and want to study English as well. English is not easy lesson studied because they feel English is not important. The last, the speaking practice applied in the classroom does not prepare the students for the real interaction.

Media can influence students to be more active to practice speaking not only in school, but also at home with their other friends. By using magazine, students can understand and communicate with other students individually or in groups. Students are not bored to learn English using media. Students are enjoy full and interested in learning English, especially speaking.

According to Hamalik (1989) the use of teaching media in process of teaching learning can encourage a desire, interest, and motivation, stimulate in learning process and give the psychological effect for students.

The writer interviewed the first year of English‘s teacher in MTs Negeri Jatibarang, Gilang Umarriyani, S.Pd on 18th Mei 2012; she said she just used a few variant methods in teaching speaking. She delivered the speaking material by speech method only. Beside that the writer also asked to some students at the first year of MTs Negeri Jatibarang. Most of them said that learning speaking are difficult and bored, because they can not speaking fluently and they can not explore their English, then they seldom to practice speaking English.

In this case, the writer use magazine as media to practice speaking. Many students just keep silent rather than speak up, so the writer try to make them speak up and tell their friends whatever they know about news. It makes class active and students are confident to practice English.

They can look for new about information about the news and add their experiences. If the students know more information, they learn more in the class. The students are able to criticize the information on magazine, which stimulate them to speak and asking question in group or individually, and then try to solve problems by themselves. They feel confident to practice speaking and expressing their opinion.

B. Identification of the Problem

1. The Research Area

The research area of the research in writing in this research is speaking. In teaching and learning process, the writer use media to teach speaking. One of the media is magazine. The writer introduces some magazines to make students be more active to speak English.

2. The Kinds of The Problem

There are some problems in learning speaking. The writer would like to mention the kinds of the problem in this research:

a. The students are not confidence in doing conversation.

b. The students are having lack motivation to practice English as the foreign. c. The students are short of vocabulary and their knowledge of the rules of grammar is not adequate.

The main problem will be investigated in this research is influence of using C‘nS Junior magazine on the students‘ English speaking skill at the first

year students of MTs Negeri Jatibarang.

C. Limitation of the Problem

The researcher tries to examine that in the process of improving students speaking competence. In this case, the researcher uses some teaching aids taken from the mass media. One of them is C‘nS Junior magazine. It can arouse students‘ interest and motivation.

In this thesis, the writer has decided to limit the topic only talking about ―The Influence of Using the C’ns Junior Magazine on the Students’ English Speaking Skill at the First Year of MTs Negeri Jatibarang. Because many students can not speak English fluently and they are not confidence to practice speaking. And C‘nS Junior magazine can be one of the ways to improve their competence on it.

D. The Questions of the Problem

The questions of the research in writing this research are:

1. How is the students‘ English speaking skill before using C‘nS Junior magazine in learning speaking?

3. Is there any significant the influence of using the C‘nS Junior magazine on the students‘ English speaking skill?

E. The Aims of the Problem

The aims of the research in writing this research are as follows:

1. To know the students‘ English speaking skill before using C‘nS Junior magazine.

2. To know the students‘ English speaking skill after using C‘nS Junior magazine.

3. To know the students‘ English speaking skill by using C‘nS Junior magazine.

4. To know the influence of using the C‘nS Juniormagazine on the students‘ English speaking skill.

F. The Use of the Research

These are the use of this research:

1. To know how far magazine can encourage students to speak English. 2. To find out the use of magazine to help students practice speaking. 3. To know how the teacher gets new technique to teach speaking.
