DITORIAL

Welcome to the sixth and final issue of the GAMBAS newsletter, with which we would like to inform you about the results of the GAMBAS (Generic Adaptive Middleware for Behavior-driven Autonomous Services) European research project.

It has been three months since the last issue of the GAMBAS newsletter - in which we have released our key demonstrator application publicly. Since the end of the GAMBAS project has arrived, it is time to summarize the results of the project and to provide an outlook on the upcoming exploitation initiatives that we were able to establish during the last year. As our partner profile in this edition of the newsletter, we present EMT Madrid which – as the public bus network operator of Madrid

– represents a key end user of the GAMBAS project.

In our events section, we report on past events such as at the Annual Polis Conference in Madrid.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue and we invite you to provide suggestions for improving your GAMBAS experience via email to marcus.handte@uni-due.de.

S

TATUS

The overall objective of the GAMBAS project is the development of an innovative and adaptive middleware to enable the privacy-preserving and automated utilization of behavior-driven services that adapt autonomously to the context of users.

OBJECTIVES

To achieve this overall objective the GAMBAS project has the following scientific and technical sub goals:

1. Development of a generic middleware that encompasses:

 Models and infrastructures to support the interoperable representation and scalable processing of context.

 Frameworks and methods to support the generic yet resource-efficient multi-modal recognition of context.

 Protocols and tools to derive, generalize, and enforce user-specific privacy-policies.

 Techniques and concepts to optimize the interaction with behavior-driven services.

2. Validation of the middleware and its components using lab tests and a prototype application in the public transportation domain.

P

HASES

Conceptually, the GAMBAS project is divided into three main phases:

(2)

The second phase included the first implementation of the GAMBAS middleware as well as the development of a refined version of the underlying specifications.

The third phase included the development of the second version of the middleware and the prototype applications. Furthermore, it included the final evaluation by means of laboratory tests and user studies.

At the time of writing, the project is at the end of the third phase and close to completion, so it is time for us to look back at three years of

development and to summarize the project’s

main results.

Besides from scientific contributions, the GAMBAS consortium has provided an implementation of the GAMBAS middleware and made it available as a Software Development Toolkit in both binary and source format. The toolkit is licensed liberally under an LGPL license which not only enables non-commercial but also commercial exploitation. A description of the SDK can be found on the project website at:

http://www.gambas-ict.eu/api

Last but not least, the GAMBAS consortium has developed a number of prototype applications and services, which have been made available through the Google Play store for Android devices. The list of applications includes:

GAMBAS Middleware

GAMBAS Linked Weather

GAMBAS Voiceprint Launcher

GAMBAS Locator

GAMBAS Madrid Navigator

XPLOITATION

Given the amount of technical material and applications that have been built during the course of the project, a clear path towards reuse has been developed during the project. By releasing the artifacts (where possible) as open source, the GAMBAS consortium has attracted other European projects to reuse (some of) the results.

For example, SIMON has chosen the GAMBAS Bus Navigator prototype as technical basis for their multimodal navigation software for mobility impaired users. This decision is an excellent showcase for the innovations

regarding trip tracking and user interface models developed by the members of the GAMBAS consortium.

SIMON is a demonstration-oriented project, started in January 2014, with three large-scale pilots in Madrid, Lisbon and Parma. SIMON aims at promoting the independent living and societal participation of mobility-impaired people in the context of public parking areas and multiple transport modes, through the adoption of specific navigation information and access-rights management solutions.

More information about SIMON can be found on the project website at http://ww.simon-project.eu.

In addition to SIMON, SmartKYE has previously chosen the GAMBAS adaptive data acquisition and processing framework as technical basis for the implementation of their complex event processing subsystem. This decision was a great showcase for the genericity of the software and flexibility of the tools developed in the GAMBAS project.

The goal of the SmartKYE project is to develop a system for the future smart grid neighborhood that will enable better business decisions to be made based on real-time fine-grained data. Key end-users targeted are the public authorities who can monitor and manage key indicators in neighborhoods with the goal of better energy efficiency and CO2 reduction.

More information about SmartKYE can be found at http://www.smartkye.eu.

(EMT)

The EMT Madrid (“Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid S.A.”) is a public

company created in 1947, it is owned by the Madrid council. It runs the bus transport service in the municipality of Madrid and is the largest company in Spain in its industry. It

is integrated in the “Consorcio Regional de Transportes” (Regional transport authority)

which coordinates the transport offer in Madrid City and surroundings.

Nowadays, EMT employs nearly 8000 workers and 2100 buses are available to travel in 217

routes across Madrid. Yearly, the EMT’s buses

are travelling more than 100 million kilometers, carrying 440 million passengers.

Apart of the transport offer of EMT, which it is positioning the company as the most important in Madrid traffic system, the company is in the cutting edge of Intelligent Transport Systems and Customer Information Systems. The EMT of Madrid is really concern with the fact of improving the service given to the passengers and those investments will mean a better service to the population.

PUBLICATION

GAMBAS LOCATOR

The GAMBAS Locator – one of the main show cases for the application development on top

of the GAMBAS middleware – is freely available on the Google Play store.

GAMBAS Locator enables users to continuously track their location. They can track visits to locations that are relevant for them and they can share their current location with their friends in a peer-to-peer fashion through the GAMBAS middleware.

In addition, the GAMBAS navigator can capture a user's personal noise exposure during the day and create a global noise map. The features of GAMBAS Locator include:

 Energy-efficient continuous location tracking.

 Automatic detection of relevant locations.

 Map-based visualization of the user's location history.

 Tracking and visualization of noise exposure.

 Location prediction based on location histories.

Help us with the evaluation of the GAMBAS middleware and try the GAMBAS Locator today. When you're done let us know what you think. It is free. More information:
