TECHNIQUES USED BY ENGLISH TEACHERS IN TEACHING SPEAKING TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:
A STUDY AT SMA N 1 PATI Efrita Christi
Abstract
Since elementary to senior high school level, Indonesian students have been taught English subject. However, in the reality many graduated senior high school students still cannot speak English. Therefore, to know why it could be in such, a study on how teachers teach speaking is conducted, as another study showed that the role of teachers in teaching speaking and the way they teach bring very crucial
influence on students’ learning. This study attempts to find out teaching
techniques used by English teacher in teaching speaking and its influence on speaking development of senior high school students. The participant of this study was three tenth grade English teachers who are teaching English subject in SMA 1 Pati. They were interviewed two times, using semi-structure interview, before and after the implementation of their techniques was observed. The study found several techniques used by English teachers to teach speaking, those are role play, storytelling, discussion, presentation, games, brainstorming, using songs, using pictures and watching video. The findings also showed that the kinds and the implementation of techniques influenced whether or not students were motivated to be involved in the activities. Moreover, the kinds and the implementation of techniques determined how much opportunity provided for students to speak in the target language.
