literary work that brings us to the world of dreams and takes us away from reality. It
has to be contrasted with a literary work that needs our interpretation. Literature is a
personal expression of feeling including experience, idea, motivation, confidence in
the concrete description by using language (Wellek, 1949:38). Literature is divided
into three genres; prose, poetry and drama. The writer will mainly discuss about
novel which is part of prose. A novel expresses some aspect of human’s love and
existence. Because novel talks about human activities and describes what happened
in surrounding ,so it is written in long composition. Novel is generally thought of as
containing about forty five thousand words or more (Kenney, 1966; 103).
Novel consists of two elements: the extrinsic and the intrinsic. The extrinsic are
the literary elements / factors which can be found outside the literary works but it is
indirectly influence the structure of the literary works. It is focused on the
background, history, social conditions and biography of the author. Sometimes, it
connects literature to the social context and psychology as well whereas the intrinsic
are the elements that build up in the literary works of literature itself. The purpose of
the entry of such elements or parts of the literary work itself. In general, the intrinsic
The writer chose novel to conduct research literature because the writer is
interested in understanding the psychological conflict and characterization of the
main character in a novel. By reading a novel we can see how the conflict can
influences the characterization of the main character. The main character may
influence by the conflict mentally and physically that draws the main character’s
characterization. Therefore, the analysis will reveal the character’s mental process
and behavior which can be identified from some aspects, such as: character’s speech,
mind, thought, action, and word.
One of the novel which writer is interested to examined is “Twilight” a novel
by Stephenie Meyer. The writer will discuss about the conflict that occured in the
novel which influence the characterization of the main character.
1. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Literature is a slice of life that has been given direction and meaning, an
artistic interpretation according to the percipient’s point of view, and it is grouped
into three genres: poetry, drama, and prose. Based on the interested of the writer in
literary work, the writer chose a novel as a part of prose to analyze. A novel is a
result of the reality of the imagination of the author has point of view and has a long
plot and more complex that contains a series of stories about the lives of the
characters. A novel as a part of prose which categorized in fiction. The two
important elements in a fiction are intrinsic and extrinsic elements, which can make
the story more interesting to be read. The intrinsic elements include theme, plot,
setting, character and atmosphere whereas the extrinsic elements consist of
psychological value, social value and cultural value.
According to (Meyer, 1987: 185) theme is central idea or meaning of the
story while setting is the context in which the action of a story occurs. The major
elements of setting are the time, place, and social environment that frame the
character. Setting can be used to evoke a mood or atmosphere that will prepare the
Plot is the pattern of events in narrative or a drama, either in prose or in verse
(Preminger, 1974:622). In most stories, these events arise conflict experienced by the
main character. In the other word we can say that the conflict is a part of plot
structure. It can be defined as One way to understand the structure of a story is to
follow the model of Freitag’s triangle.
Exposition (A-B): the exposition introduces the central character and
provides background or dramatic context. Introduction of the conflict (B), which
leads to the complication or rising action (B-C): this part of the story offers a series
of events that complicates the central character’s situation. At some point, something
forces the character to make a decision or take a course of action. That point is
known as the deciding factor. It causes the action to reverse itself. Climax (C): this is
the actual moment when the deciding factor takes place. What happens at this point
determines the outcome of the piece. Falling action (C-D): the conflict begins to
resolve itself and Resolution (D). The conflict is divided into several types;
Psychological conflict, social conflict, and physical or elemental conflict.
Related to the title the writer will discuss at the beginning about psychological
conflict. The writer define psychological conflict is a clash of action, interest, ideas
happen inside the character itself. Psychological conflicts that describe as the
struggle of the main character against his/her own nature/personality (man against his
nature). Generally, there are three kinds of conflict that will faced by the main
character in the novel:
a. Man Against Himself.
In real life, sometimes we can find man has a conflict with her / himself, where
conflict is also found in the story, where Bella has a conflict with herself in this
story. This conflict is a kind of “Man against herself.”
b. Man against man
A conflict between Man against man are found in the real life, this conflict
usually happened when man between man has their own arguments/disagreements
before reaching the climax. This conflict is also happened in the story, where Bella
has to face a problem with other character. This type of conflict is called ”Man
against man.”
c. Man against society
In society, social conflict may occur in the real life, the main source of this
conflict is about social traditions or concepts which are applied in the particular
society. This type of conflict also found in this novel, where Bella has to face a
conflict in her society, where she has to deal with the family of Edward as a vampire.
The force of society is also known as “Man against society” conflict.
All of the conflict that the main character faced in the story can influence the
characterization of the main character in the novel. We can define that
characterization is author’s presentation and developmet of the qualities of literary
figure. There are two basic types of textual indicator of character: direct definition
and indirect presentation. Direct definition such naming of a character’s qualities
counts as direct characterization only if it proceeds from the most authoritative voice
in the text on the contrary the presentation is indirect when rather than mentioning a
trait, it displays and exemplifies it in various ways (Ewen in RimmonKenan,
2002:59-61).
2. PSYCHOLOGY IN LITERATURE
Related to psychological conflict, there is a functional relationship between
psychology and literature. Literary work is the work author whose activity is related
to psychological aspect such as obsession, contemplation, sublimation and neurosis.
toward the characterization of the character in the story. One of the famous former of
personality theory is Sigmund Freud. He states that personality is the outcome of
continual battle for dominance among Id, Ego and Superego. The Id is the set of
uncoordinated instinctual trends; the superego plays the critical and moralizing role,
and the ego is the organized, realistic part that mediates between the desires of the Id
and the superego. The superego can stop one form doing certain things that one’s Id
may want to do.
B. METHODOLOGY
The method of the writer applied in this thesis is descriptive analytic method. The
writer describes the value of the object empirically. The object is not measured using
statistic method because the object of this study is not the number of people or
individual, but a literary work. The technique applied to analyze this thesis is library
research and the technique of collecting the data is closed reading (intensive
reading). The data that is used by the writer are the conversations or the statements
and the actions of the main character in the novel. The writer finds the books,
articles, and websites, which related to the study of the novel itself. The writer
collects, selects, and analyzes the data. The source of data in this study is one of the
novel entitled “Twilight” by Stephenie Meyer. After collecting the data, the writer
did several steps to analyze the study, which is closely related to the analysis. First is
Identifying the conflict occurs in setting that consists of place, time and social
environment and related with the theory of personality of Sigmund Freud. Second is
classification and quoting the sentences or paragraph which comprises the conflict.
Third is explaining the characterization of the character in the novel.
C. FINDING AND DISCUSION
Twilight is a novel work by Stephenie Meyer. This novel was first published in
2006 by Atom in Great Britain. Therefore, this novel also has a background story of
In this novel there is a 17-year-old girl called Isabella Swan. Isabella, who prefers
to be called Bella. Bella is very fair-skinned, with long, straight, dark brown hair and
chocolate brown eyes. Her face is heart-shaped a wide forehead with a widow’s
peak, large, wide-spaced eyes, prominent cheekbones, a thin nose and a narrow jaw
with a pointed chin. Her lips are a little out of proportion, a bit too full for her jaw
line. Her eyebrows are darker than her hair and more straight than they are arched.
She’s slender but not at all muscular, and weighs about 115 pounds. She has stubby
fingernails because she has a nervous habit of biting them. Bella has a kind and
awkward personality that is more mature than most girls her age. She is highly
intelligent and observant, noticing and then formulating theories about the Cullens'
strange behaviors, physical features, and unusual abilities. Bella was born in Forks,
but her mother and father split up when she was six months old. She spent the
majority of her young life in California and then later Phoenix, Arizona where she
was not very popular and never felt as if she fit in. She is far too clumsy for her own
good and tries to avoid sports and dancing.
When her mother remarried, Bella decided to move back to Forks to live with her
father. She felt a bit guilty that her mother was no t able to spend as much time
traveling with her new husband because of her, and so willingly, but not
enthusiastically, she moved in with her dad. He bought her a truck and has tried to
make her feel comfortable in her new home.
At school, Bella was greeted with great interest and made friends with a few
people right away. She first saw Edward and his family at lunch time and was told
that they generally kept to themselves. In biology class, Bella was forced to take a
seat next to Edward, as it was the only empty seat in the room. He reacted strangely
to her, making her think he hated her. It was not until two weeks later that Edward
returned to school and Bella was able to properly meet him.
After a while, Bella came to guess Edward’s secret and accepted him as a
vampire. He saved her life several times and made it his mission to keep her safe.
tracker named James and was saved when Edward drank her blood and stopped the
venom from spreading through her system.
Based on the conflict occur in the novel that Bella faces, there are three kind of
the conflict exist in the novel. First, Man Against herself/hermind. Second, Man
Against man. Third, Man Against society. Related to Sigmund Freud theory about Id,
Ego and Superego the theme of conflict that occur in the story is built by Bella’s Id,
Ego and Superego. Based on the conflicts that occurs in the novel, it develops Bella’s
characterization. In describing Bella’s characterization used indirect presentation.
The writer found the characterization of Bella as a brave, sensitive, wise and strong
woman.
D. DISCUSION
a. The conflict faed by Bella as the main caharacter
In reality, people must face the conflicts same as like conflicts that Bella face in
this novel. There are many conflicts that people face in this life will influence their
character. One of the conflicts that people should face in their life is psychological
conflict that play the important role in life. The psychological conflicts that always
appear in life divide into three. The first is conflict Man against himself, the second
is conflict Man against man and the third is conflict Man against society.
In Twilight, the conflicts that were faced by Bella exact internal
(psychological) conflicts and she had to deal with the problem from time to time.
Those conflicts are very crucial in the development of Bella’s character, and they
will reveal the quality inside her. There are three types of conflicts that are found in
this novel, where Bella has to deal with.
The conflict of Man against Her mind/Herself
In this conflict Bella has to against her own feeling, where she has to do the
things which is contrast with her feeling. This conflict consists of the conflict in
facing her loneliness after she decided to go to the Forks without her mother. In this
part she faced that she should leave someone that she really love that is her mother
lonely because her mother lives separately. It clearly shows the conflict of Bella
with herself/her own feeling to leave her mother even though she would not to do
that. In this situation Bella faces her psychological conflict. It means that Bella
against her desire to stay with her mother. She does not want to disturb her mother
with Phil. She want her mother happy and not stress because of her. Bella never want
to leave her because she really love her. In this passage Bella faced the psychological
conflict because of her mother. In one side she really want to stay with her mother
and in the other side she should allow and give her mother the opportunity to be with
Phil without her. She should against herself / her mind to still fine and good without
her mother.
Related to Sigmund Freud about Id, Ego and Superego, in this part Id of Bella
is her love to her mother, she want to stay live together with her mother is her ego
but in this situation she could not stay with her mother because she should allow her
mother to go travel with her new husband. So, Bella decided to let her mother go
with Phil because she does not want to disturb her mother with her new husband. In
this part Bella’s superego is dominant because she let her mother go with her new
husband even though she should sacrifice her happiness.
There is another conflict that should Bella faced is when she moves to Forks,
a place that Bella hate because of the gloomy weather over there, she should fight
with her mind because she should leave her mother in Phoenix and go to Forks to
stay with her father with the gloomy weather that she does not like, “It was foggy
and dark outside my window, absolutely perfect.”(Twilight, 2006:196)
This short and seemingly simple sentence represents a transformation in
Bella. From the first chapter, Bella defines herself by her love of the sun and her
hatred for the cold and the rain. Forks is presented as a prison sentence, not because
of its small size but because of its gloomy weather.
Yet in this sentence, Bella describes the “foggy” and “dark” weather, usually
two of her least favorite conditions, as “absolutely perfect.” Her love for Edward has
changed the way she sees the world. Bad weather means he’ll be in school, so it has
generally. Although he would be considered by most, and even himself, as a kind of
monster, Bella’s love makes this point irrelevant. He is perfect to her.
The other conflict that Bella faced is when she should make a decision to her
life, is she become a vampire or not because of her love to Edward. In this part shows
how Bella should against with her mind, it is show the Psychological conflict of
Bella. In this part shows how difficult for Bella to make a decision is she will be a
vampire or not, monster or not, she is not going to let the circumstances keep her
from Edward. Unlike Carlisle, who can mentally overcome his strongest instincts,
Bella cannot overcome her attraction to Edward, no matter how unnatural or
dangerous. Related to Freud theory about Id, Ego and superego, the theme of this
conflict is built by Bella’s Id. Bella’s Id is her love to Edward and her ego is she
made a decision to be a vampire because of her love to Edward. Based on all the
explanation, clearly describes how Bella’s Ego drive herself to fulfill her need of
love to Edward.
The conflict of Man Against Man.
In this conflict shows how Bella against the other characters and it is caused
by her own characters because they have a different thought. In this part of conflict
she has to deal with the conflict with Edward. The first conflict between Bella and
Edward happened when their first meeting in Biology class. Edward acted like he
does not want be a friend with Bella. It is because Bella’s blood was smell good and
that made Edward thirsty of it and he tried to cover his desire of Bella’s blood. This
is the first conflict that Bella faced when she meet Edward for the first time. She feel
uncomforted because of Edward attitude that he shows to Bella. Bella feels like there
is something wrong with herself. In this situation Bella should against with the other
character which is Edward. It was unpleasant meeting for Bella.
The next conflict occurs is when Bella knew about Edward. He is a vampire
and she fall in love with him. This is one of the few passages where we see the true,
natural relationship between Bella and Edward. Here, Edward is the most beautiful
Bella has ever seen him, because he is not hiding any part of himself from her. But
Bella is more frightened of him here than she ever has been, yet she makes no
move to try to escape, and her love is not in any way diminished, although she sees
him as the predator he truly is. Here, then, it is clear that Bella’s love for him does
not rely on self delusion or denial. She can see him in his true form and still love him
enough to risk her life to be near him.
Related to Sigmund Freud theory about Id, Ego, and Superego, the theme of
this conflict is built by Bella’s Id. Bella’s Id is her love to Edward and her Ego is she
made a decision to be a vampire because of her love to Edward. Based on all the
explanation above, clearly describes how Bella’s Ego drive herself to fulfill her need
of love to Edward.
The conflict Man against society
In this conflict, Bella tried to against the force of her society and it shows
from Bella’s statement, “I was expected, a topic of gossip no doubt. Daughter of the
Chief’s flighty ex-wife, come home at last.” (Twilight, 2006:13)
From the quotation above, it explain Bella’s condition about how hard and
confusing her because of the situation that she should face, because it will be the first
time to meet Charlie (Bella’s father) since she move to Phoenix with her mother and
let Charlie stay in Forks just by myself. “I was expected, a topic of gossip no doubt”’
this statement is derived by Bella when she arrived in Forks and she will meet with
everybody that know her when she was young, when she went to Phoenix with her
Mother and leave Charlie alone in Forks. The statement “Daughter of the Chief’s
flighty ex-wife, come home at last, ” interprets the sentence as the feeling sickness to
something unworthy. This depiction shows the conflict between man against society
in which Bella felt uncomfortable with all the possibility of the opinion every people
that know her in Forks. In this case she has to faces the force of society which affects
to her psychological concern.
Another quotation that also proved that Bella face society force is when she
came to Edward house and meet with The Cullen’s family. All of them happy to
meet Bella except Rosalie. This situation made Bella should face the conflict with
pretending like this isn’t dangerous for all of us. The entire family will be implicated
if this ended badly.”(Twilight, 2006:285)
This situation of the quotations above happened when Bella visit Edward’s
family. It clearly describe on how Rosalie hate Bella because of her relationship with
Edward puts Rosalie and the others in danger. Rosalie think that if there is a human
around them it will be dangerous for all of them because the vampire hunter will hunt
the human around them and it will make them face the battle and will fight the hunter
because they should protect Bella because Bella is Edward’s girlfriend and will be
the part of their family. Bella felts uncomfortable with her condition right now
because he will make something bad happen if she still has a relationship with
Edward.
Based on all the explanation above explains that as a social person, Bella was
demanded to listen to the public opinion. This implies that public’s opinion have
great influence to Bella image. This forced Bella to carefully act as a human around
the vampire environment. Thus, it becomes her conflict that she has to face in her
society.
b. The characterization of Bella Swan as the main character
In a novel entitled Twilight there are two main problems were found. Those
are conflicts and the character of the main character itself. Those things cannot be
separated each other because conflict and character are related to each other in
building the story.
The conflict that was told in this novel is a psychological conflict caused by
the situation found by the main character. Psychological perspective in this novel can
be clearly seen through the conflicts, mind and actions of main characters in solving
those conflicts. This perspective also pertained with characterization due to its great
influences to the speech, mental process, as well as actions that had taken in facing a
conflict.
In analyze this novel the writer uses the indirect presentation to describe the
present Bella’s characterization but the author present more in narrating Bella’s
mind, action, and the condition of the main character that implicitly depict the
psychological conflict. Therefore Bella’s characterization is analyzed based on
Bella’s speech, action, and external appearances. Based on the character’s speech,
the writer describes Bella’s characterization from the conversation or soliloquy, it
means that she is talking to herself. All the characterization of Bella in this
discussion related about her love to Edward Cullen.
Being Brave
Based on indirect presentation Bella’s characterization described as brave
woman in deciding something for her life. At the novel beginning, Bella finds, “ the
hardest part is making decision between sacrifice herself to protect her mother or
Edward as her boyfriend”. This statement strongly asserted when James (the hunter)
really want the Bella’s blood and he try to persuade Bella to come to the Ballet room
to meet her mother. Her mother will die if Bella does not come to that place. Bella
decided to go to the Ballet room without Edward to meet James and sacrifice herself
for her mother. This situation show that Bella against herself and her mind, the
psychological conflict shows based on the quotation below:
"I'D NEVER GIVEN MUCH THOUGHT TO HOW I WOULD DIE --- though I'd had reason enough in the last few months --- but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this. I stared without breathing across the long room, into the dark eyes of the hunter, and he looked pleasantly back at me."(Twilight, 2006:01)
The quotation above, imply that how Bella should against her mind and its
implied the psychological with herself. She should sacrifice herself to protect her
mother from the hunter. An author clearly describes Bella’s characterization as a
brave woman by indirect presentation in the sentence “.... I stared without breathing
across the long room, into the dark eyes of the hunter, and he looked pleasantly back
at me. In this sentences the author draw Bella’s characterization based on Bella’s
Being Wise
In this novel, Bella's characterization is clearly described. She is not only
portrayed as a brave woman but also as a wise woman. In this case she made the
right decision because she does not want to see her mother will be the victim of the
hunter that really want Bella's blood. She never regret when she decided to sacrifice
herself to keep and protect all the people she love from the hunter that thirst of
Bella's blood. In this situation portrayed how Bella loves her mother even though
they were not living in harmony. In this situation Bella did the right decision to
sacrifice herself even though they have different ideas. In this situation Bella get the
psychological conflict when she should against with her mind and herself about her
decision to sacrifice herself even her mother is not in the same page with her.
Related to Freud theory about id, ego, and superego, the theme of this conflict is
built by Bella’s id. It is mean even Bella has problems with her mother, she willing
to sacrifice herself for the sake of her mother.
Being Sensitive
The next characterization of Bella in the novel is sensitive. It shows when she
join the Biology class for the first time. There is only one space that can Bella seat is
next to Edward that has a strange behavior to her. This situation made Bella
uncomfortable and shows Bella sensitivity, when Bella’s is anger at Edward that
make her cry. Usually, when an angry woman cried it shows that the sensitivity of a
woman.
The other statement that shows Bella’s sensitivity is when she knew that Edward
as a vampire. She fall in love with him but Edward beg her to leave him because he
is a vampire. It is dangerous for her to stay with Edward. Edward does not want to
hurt her. In this situation Bella feel sad and sed a tear because she though that
Being Strong
All conflicts that she faced made her as a strong woman. This is the other
characterization of Bella. It shows from her statement below:
“I wasn’t being nice, “I confessed, ignoring his attempt at diversion, looking
down at my knees. “That was the same thing my mom said when she left him. You
could say I was hitting below the belt.(Twiligh,2006:346)
Bella’s described as a strong woman in facing her problem. In this case Bella
should face the condition of how to be a strong woman because of her decision to be
with Edward. On the quotation above, Bella feel guilty to her father. She should
leave him because James hunt her if she does not leave her father, it will be
dangerous for her father. She should go with Edward family to escape from the
hunter without one of her family that she really knew, such as her mother and her
father. In this situation Bella pursed to survive without her parents, especially
without her father. It is clearly explanation how strong Bella in face her problem.
E. CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
The conclusion focuses on conflicts that occur in the story and the
characterization of Bella Swan as the main character in Twilight. In analysis of
psychological conflict, the writer describes the characterization and psychological
conflicts of the main character which is found in novel entitled TWILIGHT. Related
to Sigmund Freud theory about Id, Ego and Superego the theme of the conflicts
which Bella faces is built by Bella’s Id, Ego and Supergo. It shows in description of
Bella’s characterization as a wise woman. In this part Bella faces psychological
condition. Even though she was never in harmony with her mother, she willing to
sacrifice herself for the sake of her mother. The other conflict which Bella faces is
built by Bella’s Id it shows when Bella fall in love with Edward. She really love
with Edward and want to be with him is Bella’s Id. She decided to be a vampire
because of her love to Edward. Based on the theory of Sigmund Freud the conflict
which Bella faces is built by Bella’s Id, ego and superego. There are three conflicts
conflict she tried not to show her sadness and lonelyness because she should leave
her mother with her new husband, she keep it inside of her due to she does not want
to disturb the people around her and she has to keep moving on with her life and her
condition.
Second conflict is where she has the conflict between her and other characters
where she faces the problem wisely and learns to accept the diversity and how to
make the right decision which is influence to her life for the future. The third is about
the conflict against her society, where she tried to well behave in order to face the
society’s force, in these conflicts she tries to keep on positive thinking what people
think and want about her. Finally, she can accept the reality that she faces and she
has to keep moving on and choose the decision for her life.
Based on the conflicts that Bella faced, it influences Bella’s characterization.
It shows in speech and actions that she had taken to face the conflicts. In this
analysis, Bella is described as a brave, sensitive, wise and strong woman. Bella’s life
is much influenced by the conflicts that she faced in her life. Those conflicts
contributes to the development of her characterization as a strong woman. Yet, Bella
described as a sensitive woman but from the conflicts that she faced it made her as a
brave woman. In the result of those conflicts that Bella faced made her be a wise
