Abstract:
Psychoanalysis Study: How Trauma Leads to Repression in Two Different Characters
as Revealed in „Hide and Seek‟ Film

Trauma is a root of repression that may lead someone to have a psychological disorder. Every human has his or her own way to release his or her repression in any form, such as dreams, phantasy, homicide, and/or split personality, whether he or she aware and/or unaware of it. Hide and Seek film is an interesting example of the trauma phenomena in psychoanalysis study. Hide and Seek film portrays how trauma can lead a father‟s character (David) to repress his trauma in forms of dreams, homicide, and split personality. In addition, the daughter‟s character (Emily) represses her trauma in forms of phantasy and split personality. This study is aimed to examine how the film portrays that trauma has a big influence to the characters‟ psychology in their live. Psychoanalysis is used to conduct this research and the characters in this film are analyzed using the Psychoanalysis theory. The finding is that trauma still holds a strong role in making the characters David (father) and Emily (daughter) to repress their trauma in different way, and they have different way in releasing their trauma. Through those characters, readers can see how trauma could be dangerous weapon for humans‟ mind and later for humans‟ future adaption.
