Background
of the ResearchLiterature is a part
of
culture that cannot be separated from humanlife.
Literaturenot

it

literary
work
(Hudson:

is a
medium
of
cornmunication to convey theinformation to
the readers about phenomena thatexist
in
society. Literaturecan be divided into some parts: short story, novel, poetry, and drama.
As Abrams said
in
A
Glossarv ofLiterary
Term, thatis
"The term'novel'
is now appliedto
a
greatvariety
of
writing
that
havein
commononly
the attribute
of
being extended worksof fiction written in
prose" (190).It
can be said that, novel is oneof
long literary works and good to be read.Novel
is one of the rnost popular literary works in thistime.
It
is not only
asa
readingto
fill
sparetime
but
alsogiving

deliveringimportant information
to
its
readers.By
readinga
novel,
readernot only
knows
the problem that happen to the main character but also the situation or condition that happento the

literary
work in
this
case novel reflects the conditionof
certain society bythe
time
it
is
created andit
gives knowledgeto
the
readers about eventsthat
happen,periodically.
Through
this
literary
work,
reader
may know any
kind
of
the
importantinformation which
arein
the novel
like
socialcondition,
social status, some ma:riagesthat exist
in
societyin
certain period, etc. Therefore, thewriter
uses GeorgeEliot's
SilasMamer
becausethe novel
expressesthe
social condition
in
English
society
in
19ftcentury.
English society
in
19th century is divided into three classes, which
are upper class people, middle class people, andworking
class people. Upper class people is the superior classin
society.Middle
class people is the people who get higher education at universityand most
of
them get ajob by
giving
professional serviceto
the people, such as doctor, lawyer, rector, banker, etc.
Working
class people is theinferior
classin
England, they donot get higher education
like
middle class people and most of them usetheir
labor power tofulfill
their needs, such as weaver, labor man, servant, etc.Different
social classes canbe distinguished
by
knowing
some cases such as power,authority,
f-amilylife,
wealth, lifestyle, education, occupation, accsnt, the ownership of property (Oakland: 1998).
It
canbe
saidthat
social
status makes someonefrom
what
classthey
arefrom.
Each class,especially upper class people
try to
maintain
or
improvetheir
standardof
life
become1
partner. In other words, they not only use their time to having fun but also to
find
the bestcouple for their
life.
The
writer
is
interestedin
doing the
research throughthis
novel
becauseit
isEliot's third novel
and
the
best
known
of
her work. This novel not
also gives
theinformation
or reflects the social conditionin
Englandin
19ft century but also shows thesocial problem
that
happenat that time, which
are
some marriagesthat
conducting between classes. Thosethings
representthe real
condition
in
English society
in
i9ft
century- Therefore, the
writer
analyzes social condition, social status, and the effectsof
marriage and social status,
which
arein
the novel entitle"The
Effectson
Marriage andSocial Status

ldentification
of theProblem
In this
research,the
writer
focusesher
researchon
socialcondition
in
Englishsociety
in
19d'century, especiallyin
rnarriage and social status. There are hidden hintsin
Eliot's
SilasMarner
concernedwith
how the
upper
class people,Cass'
family,
usesmarriage as
the
instrumentto
perpetuatetheir
social dominancein
upper class people. Nevertheless, such a perpetuation isdifficult
to
reveal. Therefore,it
is the main problem to investigate in this research, in which there are the effects on some marriages (exogamyand endogamy) and
social
statusin
perpetuatingthe
social imbalancesfor
