ABSTRAK
Kelahiran prematur adalah suatu kondisi medis yang ditandai dengan kelahiran bayi sebelum usia kehamilan memasuki minggu ke 37.Kelahiran bayi premature merupakan salah satu komplikasi kehamilan yang disebabkan oleh berbagai faktor. Faktor-faktor tersebut dapat dilihat dari karakteristik ibu yang mengandung. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui karakteristik ibu hamil yang melahirkan bayi prematur di R.S.U.P. Haji Adam Malik pada tahun 2012. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dengan desain cross sectional yang dilakukan di Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat Haji Adam Malik Medan. Subjek penelitian berjumlah 106 orang. Hasil yang diperoleh setelah dilakukan proses analisis data menunjukkan bahwa bahwa ibu hamil yang melahirkan bayi terbesar pada kelompok umur antara 26-35 tahun sebanyak 44,3%. Selain itu, banyak ibu yang melahirkan bayi prematur memiliki tingkat pendidikan SLTA sebanyak 34,9%. Kategori pekerjaan yang banyak melahirkan bayi prematur adalah ibu rumah tangga (IRT) sebanyak 50,0%.

ABSTRACT
Premature birth is a medical condition characterized by the birth of a baby before the age of entering the 37th week of pregnancy. Premature birth is one of the complications in pregnancy. There is lot of factors that can be seen in a pregnant mother which affects the baby. This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of pregnant women who gave birth to a premature baby at General Hospital Haji Adam Malik in 2012.
This study is a descriptive study with cross-sectional design conducted at General Hospital Center for H. Adam Malik. The research subjects are 106 people. The results obtained after the analysis of the data showed that pregnant women who gave birth to the biggest baby in the age group between 26-35 years as many as 44,3% . When, many mothers who gave birth to a premature baby has a high school education level as many as 34,9% .In work category, housewives gives birth more to premature babies which is 50,0 % .
