JOINT STATEMENT BETWEEN

THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED MEXICAN STATES, H.E. FELIPE CALDERON HINOJOSA

AND

THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA, H.E. SUSILO BAMBANG YUDHOYONO

ON THE OCCASION OF HIS OFFICIAL VISIT TO MEXICO MEXICO CITY, NOVEMBER 17th 2008

At the invitation of the President of the United Mexican States, H.E. Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, paid an official visit to Mexico from November 16th to 17th 2008. The visit of President Yudhoyono to Mexico coincided with the 55th anniversary of bilateral relations between both countries and marked an important milestone in the mutual endeavor towards an active, dynamic and stronger cooperation. This visit followed the constructive bilateral meeting held by the two Presidents during the GB plus 8 meeting in Hokkaido, Japan, on July 8th. 2008.

During this visit to Mexico, President Yudhoycno and President Calderon held productive talks and affirmed their commitment to strengthen, expand and elevate their bilateral relations in all its facets. They also discussed a number of regional and global issues where Indonesia and Mexico have common interests. The two Presidents recognized that Mexico and Indonesia are two countries with deep affinit!es in the richness of their history, vibrant cultural diversity and symbolism of their traditions. Both countries are also inspired by common values and ideals such as democracy, social justice, respect for human rights and international peace and cooperation.

The two Presidents committed to continue strengthening the bilateral political dialogue through high level meetings and to further intensify exchange of visits among the leaders and high ranking officials of the two countries. For that purpose, they agreed to optimize the mechanism of bilateral political consultation and to promote other ways of dialogue and communication among vario1Js stake-holders.

The Presidents agreed to intensify bilateral economic cooperation. Both sides acknowledged the contir;uing positive performance of bilateral trade and stressed the need to seize the opportunities, taking advantage of our com:Jlementarities and the size of our economies. In this, they will encourage the private sectors on both sides to accelerate business relations.

The two Presidents agreed to increase educational exchanges and foster greater cooperation 「・セカ・・ョ@ universities and research centers. They also agreed to expand scientific and technical cooperation through projects that have a greater impact in the process of economic and social development.

The two Presidents agreed to widen the bilateral legal framework, as a basis to provide certainty to the relations. Ir. this regard, they welcomed the entry into force of the Agreement on Educational and Cultural Cooperation. They also expressed their confidence on the successful conclusion of the negotiation of the Agreement for Reciprocal Protection and Promotion of Investment.

During the meeting, the two Presidents witnessed the signing of the following cooperation instruments:

Memorandum of Understanding between Promexico and the National Agency for Export Development of the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia.

Memorandum of Understanding between PEMEX and PT Pertamina.

Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States and the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia on Education and Training Cooperation in Diplomatic Affairs.

Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food of Mexico on the Establishment of Consultative Committee on Agriculture.

Taking into consideration the significant role played by the two countries in the global scene and in the construction of a new paradigm of international cooperation, the two Presidents agreed to work closely in the international and regional fora and mechanisms such as the UN, G-20, WTO, and APEC. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation to address transnational challenges such as financial instability and economic turmoil, rising food prices, climate change and energy security.

Both Presidents expressed their views that the bilateral relations wil! contribute to promote a higher presence of Indonesia in Latin America and of Mexico in South East Asia. The President of Mexico praised Indonesia's constructive role in the UN Security Council during 2007-2008 and offered to maintain a close communication throughout 2009-2010 when Mexico wi ll be a non-permanent member of the UNSC.
