Abstract
As a song can be a tool to deliver a message of the writer, some researchers try to find out what message is carried by particular songs. This study also analyzed the song album from a British rock band, Coldplay. Consisting of 12 songs, the album was intended as an apology from the writer to his ex-wife. This study aimed at finding out what mood choices were carried by the songs in the album. By finding the mood choice, this study wanted to investigate how the mood choice corresponds to the communicative task of the songs. The mood choice in this study was analyzed through looking at the position of subject and finite. Based on the position of the subject and finite, the mood choice could be declarative, interrogative or imperative. Those mood choices are closely associated with its function in common. Declarative functions as statement, interrogative function as question or offer, and imperative function as command. However, when the mood is not associated with its function in common, and then in can be defined as non-congruent mood. The study found that the songs use mostly declarative in which function as statement since the purpose of the song album was to say sorry and showed regret. It also presents that there were some non-congruent mood which were carried by the songs. Those are declarative-offer, interrogative-statement, and declarative-command. These non-congruent clauses were one way for the writer to negotiate the meaning of the clauses.
