After serving as a private university for seventeen years, it was officially declared on the 19th of August 1981, as the 42th state university in Indonesia in accordance with the presidential decree No.37/1981. The name of “Haluoleo” belongs to a local hero living in the 17th
century. The Haluoleo University is now known as UNHALU.
UNHALU was formerly located on a small campus in Kemaraya. Due to limited spaces and facilities in old campus, the university executives then established a new campus called Kampus Hijau Bumi Tridharma Anduonohu, with an area of 250 ha.
At the time of establishment, UNHALU had four faculties; the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Economic, Faculty of Social dan Political Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, with only seventeen lecturers. The area of the campus at that time was only 7 ha. The new campus, known as Kampus Hijau Bumi Tridarma, was then built to anticipate the development of the university in the future. The area of the new campus is about 14 km from the central city of Kendari. The time required to build this new campus is ten years.
Since its establishment in 1981, UNHALU has been headed by five rectors; Prof. Edy Agussalim Mokodompit as the first rector, and then continued respectively by Prof. Soleh Salahuddin, Prof. Abdurrauf Tarimana, Prof. Mahmud Hamundu, and currently Prof. Usman Rianse. Every rector has contributed significantly to the development of UNHALU.
At present, UNHALU has 8 faculties. The later faculties are the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science. There are 38 departments within these faculties, with 52 Study Programs. There are also graduate schools in the area of Agronomy,
