Coal Price Increases 58 Percent, Performance of Bukit Asam
(PTBA) Brilliant

HE PRICE of coal is still high, even reaching US$400 per ton in the global market. This has become one of the drivers of the performance of PT Bukit Asam Tbk.(PTBA).
Throughout the first semester of 2022, PTBA managed to record a net profit of Rp 6.2 trillion, up 246 percent compared to the same period last year (year on year/yoy) which was valued at Rp 1.8 trillion.
The mining SOE's net profit was supported by revenues of Rp. 18.4 trillion, an increase of 79 percent over the same period last year.
PTBA President Director Arsal Ismail said the increase in PTBA's performance was driven by a significant increase in coal prices.
PTBA reported that the average selling price (ASP) of PTBA's coal rose 58 percent from semester I/2021. In the first semester of 2022, PTBA's coal ASP was valued at Rp.
1.2 million per ton, the price increased from last year's only Rp. 787,000.
"So the first quarter of 2022 is only Rp. 1.1 million, the second quarter of 2022 is Rp.
1.3 million. So the average is Rp 1.2 million,” explained PTBA Finance Director Farida Thamrin in a press conference, Friday (26/8/2022).
Arsal added that the price of coal is quite difficult to predict. Even though the global price in Newcastle is rising, if PTBA sells at that price, it will not sell.

ARGA batu bara masih tinggi, bahkan kembali menembus US$400 per ton di pasar global. Hal ini menjadi salah satu pendorong kinerja PT Bukit Asam Tbk.(PTBA).
Sepanjang semester I/2022, PTBA berhasil membukukan laba bersih sebesar Rp6,2 triliun, naik 246 persen dibanding periode serupa di tahun lalu (year on year/yoy) yang senilai Rp 1,8 triliun.
PTBA melaporkan rata-rata harga jual (ASP) batu bara PTBA naik 58 persen dari semester I/2021. Pada semester I/2022 semester ASP batu bara PTBA senilai Rp1,2 juta per ton, harganya naik dari tahun lalu hanya Rp787.000.
“Jadi kuartal I/2022 hanya Rp1,1 juta, kuartal II/2022 jadi Rp1,3 juta.

DAILY NEWS UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022
“By the end of the year, the coal price is expected to be relative to the current condition, not much different. At the most, it will go up and down by 10 percent, unless there are significant things, for example, Russia-Ukraine will find peace sooner or later, or it will break apart more badly, we can't predict it," said Arsal.
In general, the expectation is that the fluctuating price of coal will not be far from the current price, it can still move in the range of US$390-US$410 per tonne. Editor : Pandu Gumilar
Editor : Pandu Gumilar

IMA Chairman: All Stakeholders Must Be Serious in Overcoming
Unlicensed Mining
Rio Indrawan
T
HE INDONESIA Mining Association (IMA) hopes that all stakeholders are serious in overcoming the practice of illegal mining (PETI) which has recently re-emerged. Local governments and the National Police are also encouraged to be proactive in preventing PETI and not waiting for an escalation to escalate."Very important is the coordination of the Regional Government-Police-and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR)," said Rachmat Makkasau, Chairman of IMA, Sunday (28/8).
Rachmat revealed that the vital role of handling PETI is actually in the Regional Government and the Police. Meanwhile, from mining companies that have business permits from the government, it is best to report, especially if there are indications of PETI in their area. "We hope they don't wait until the scale grows bigger because it will be more difficult (handling),"
explained Rachmat.
According to him, IMA always asks its members to coordinate with the Regional Government-Police and the Ministry of EMR. "Progress is carried out by each company with the Regional Government and Police, as well as support from the Ministry of EMR," he said.
PETI activities are increasingly out of control, especially when commodity prices continue to rise and lead to high price disparities. There are many activities at mining points without permits in the mineral and coal sector.
Ketua IMA: Semua Stakeholders Harus Serius Atasi
Pertambangan Tanpa Izin
Rio Indrawan
I
ujarnya.
Kegiatan PETI semakin tak terkendali, terutama ketika harga komoditas terus naik dan menyebabkan terjadinya disparitas harga tinggi. Banyak kegiatan di titik pertambangan tanpa izin di sektor minerba.

DAILY NEWS UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022
In addition to legal mining companies, the government and the community also suffer losses because the surrounding environ- ment is damaged.
Based on data from the Ministry of EMR, as of the third quarter of 2021, there are 2,645 mineral mining PETA locations and 96 coal mining locations. The Ministry of EMR also stated that around 3.7 million workers are involved in PETI activities.
Brigadier General (Pol) Pipit Rismanto, Director of Certain Crimes at the National Police's Criminal Investigation Agency, said that currently there has been coordination and data synchronization between the police and the Ministry of EMR on several mining commodities. PETI's activities not only violate the Minerba Law, but also the Manpower Law related to OHS, the Environmental Law so that there is misuse of subsidized fuel.
"The problem of PETI is very complex, it cannot be solved on its own, so it is necessary to arrange a developing and sustainable regulation that is able to support the regional and national economy, coordination between institu- tions and synergy must also be improved,"
said Pipit when speaking at a webinar in Jakarta, Monday (22/8/2022).
Ade Adhari, Executive Director of the Diponegoro Center for Criminal Law, said that there were at least five losses due to PETI in Indonesia. In addition to environmental damage and pollution, there is also loss of state revenue and there is no guarantee for reclamation and post- mining. "The PETI activity also eliminates the opportunity for mining CSR, there is no Community Development obligation other than people's lives are threatened," said the lecturer of criminal law at Tarumanegara University, Jakarta.

DAILY NEWS UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022
Ade said that criminal sanctions are needed for PETI perpetrators. The goal is to influence the public not to violate administrative law norms through sad sanctions. In addition, it protects the interests of the wider community so that it is protected from administrative criminal acts. "In addition, it provides a means of final settlement for violators of administrative law norms who do not comply with the administrative sanctions that have been imposed," he said.
The PETI offense refers to the Minerba Law articles 158 and 160. Article 158 states that anyone who conducts mining without a permit as referred to in Article 35 shall be subject to a maximum penalty of five years and a maximum fine of Rp. 100 billion. Article 160 states that anyone who has an IUP and an IUPK at the stage of exploration activities but carries out production operations will be punished with five years and a maximum fine of Rp.
100 billion. (RI)
DAILY NEWS UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022
"ADMR enjoyed strong first half results as a listed company, supported by higher ASP and increased sales volume," Christian said in his official statement, Monday (29/8/
2022).
He continued, ADMR continued to receive strong interest in hard cooking coal products, which resulted in a 9 percent growth in sales volume in the first half of 2022. The strong condition of coal prices also boosted ADMR's ASP in the first semester of 2022 by 143 percent.
Christian believes ADMR is on track to meet the company's production guideline of 2.8-3.3 million metric tons by 2022.
"In addition, we continue to support the transformation within the Adaro group to achieve a new milestone in our plan to lay the groundwork for an aluminum smelter in 2023, as the first project in the construction of the world's largest green industrial estate in North Kalimantan," he said.
Furthermore, ADMR recorded a 7 percent increase in production volume to 1.53 million MT from 1.43 million MT compared to the same period last year. ADMR also posted a sales volume of 1.28 million MT in semester I/2022, 9 percent higher than semester I/2021 of 1.17 MT.
ADMR also recorded a profit for the period attributable to owners of the parent entity of US$201.4 million in the first semester of 2022. This net profit rose 489.3 percent compared to the same period last year of US$34.1 million. Editor : Pandu Gumilar

'Aided' by China, Coal Prices Forecast Still Smoldering!
Maesaroh, CNBC Indonesia
C
OAL prices fell 3.77% last week in line with easing market panic regarding supply. However, the price of black sand is estimated to still move in the range of US$
400 this week due to the drought problem in China.
In the last trading last week, Friday (26/8/2022), the price of contract stone on the ICE Newcastle market closed at US$
427 per ton. The price rose 3.45%. The strengthening on Friday broke the negative trend of coal that lasted from Tuesday- Thursday last week.
In a week, coal prices fell 3.77% point to point. Last week's decline was a reversal from the impressive record of the previous two weeks. Coal prices rose 10.11% in the last two weeks and flew 16.22% in the previous three weeks.
In a month, the price of coal is still sloping 2.95% while in a year it is still up 153.41%.
Bank Mandiri Industry Analyst Ahmad Zuhdi estimates that coal prices will move in the range of US$ 410 per ton this week.
Fears of a recession will depress future movements in coal prices amidst high demand from a number of countries.
"The driving factor is the increase in global demand, including China and several European Union countries which have experienced a heatwave. The demand in the European Union has damaged the market. In the end, global prices that should not have gone up rose because there was demand running there," said Zuhdi, to CNBC Indonesia.
'Dibantu' China, Harga Batu Bara Diramal Masih Membara!

Harganya menguat 3,45%.

DAILY NEWS UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022
The demand for coal prices from China is estimated to remain high in line with the increasing use of electricity due to the heat wave. Drought and heat are now spreading to a number of regions in China such as Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, Chongqing, Sichuan, and Tibet.
Drought also reduces the discharge of the Yangtze River, thereby reducing the capacity of hydropower generated electricity. The dryness of the Yangtze River has not only made tens of thousands of Chinese citizens short of water supply but many companies have also shut down operations due to electricity shortages.
The Yangtze River which flows from the south of Sichuan to the west of Hubei is one of the main sources of electricity generation in China. Hydropower contributes to 7.7% of the electricity supply in the Bamboo Curtain Country while coal is around 67.4%.
The hydroelectric power plant in Sichuan Province, which has been responsible for 21% of the hydropower supply in China, is now only able to produce 50% of its capacity. With reduced hydropower capacity, China is turning to coal again.
The increase in electricity consumption due to the heat wave caused the burning of coal plants in China in the first two weeks of August to reach 8.16 million per day.
This figure is up 15% compared to the same period last year.
China's largest mining company, Sichuan Coal Industry Group, has been increasing coal production by 15,000 tonnes per day since mid-August to meet supply at the plant.
Meanwhile, Sichuan Guang'an Power Generation, which is Beijing's largest coal plant, has increased electricity production by 170%. In August this year,...

DAILY NEWS UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022
In August this year, electricity capacity is estimated to increase by 313% (year on year/yoy).
"The reduction in hydroelectric power has forced China to rely on coal again for its electricity supply. Electricity usage will continue to soar if weather conditions continue to persist," said Guotai Jun'an Securities, quoted by CNN.
In line with China, Germany is also still struggling with the issue of energy supply due to the drying up of the surface of the Rhine River. The German government is now even concerned that plans to re- operate their coal plants do not go according to plan as coal shipping traffic through the Rhine River is disrupted.
'Due to reduced domestic shipping traffic, the supply of coal is reduced. The additional storage in southern Germany may not be fully filled this winter," the German government document said, as quoted by Reuters.
The power plant at Moorburg, operated by Vattenfall, is unlikely to be operational again due to technical and economic problems. The Moorburg coal-fired power plant in Hamburg is one of Germany's most modern plants but has ceased operations in the summer of 2021. Parts of the plant are then taken up for other purposes, such as hydrogen generation.
"Some parts (of the generator) have been removed and sold," said Robert Wacker, one of the directors of Moorburg, as quoted by France24.
Deutsche Welle reported, Heyden coal plant in Petershagen, near Hanover is scheduled to be operational again today, Monday (29/8/2022). A number of plants will also be restarted in the next few weeks to compensate for the gas reduction.
Pada Agustus tahun ini, kapasitas listrik diperkirakan naik hingga 313% (year on year/yoy)

HE INCREASE in coal royalty rates has the potential to affect the financial performance of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA). The Company's President Director, Arsal Ismail, said that the policy could erode the Company's net profit."With the application of this royalty, it will certainly slightly erode the company's profit if there is no increase in sales," said Arsal, quoted on Sunday (28/8/2022).
However, according to Arsal, the impact of the policy will still be minimal this year.
Moreover, PTBA's financial condition is still very healthy, supported by rising coal prices.
Arsal explained, the increase in royalties will have an impact on the increase in the Cost of Goods Sold (HPP). On the other hand, the costs incurred are also offset by market conditions where coal is experiencing a price spike.
According to Arsal, the effect of the royalty increase will only be felt next year, especially if coal prices and sales decline.
Arsal estimates that the increase in coal royalties has the potential to increase costs by around 5 percent.

ENAIKAN tarif royalti batu bara ber- potensi mempengaruhi kinerja keuangan PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA).
Arsal memperkirakan kenaikan royalti batu bara berpotensi mengakibat- kan beban biaya meningkat sekitar 5 persen.

However, continued Arsal, taking into account market conditions next year, PTBA can still anticipate the impact. Arsal believes that in the future the company's financial condition will remain healthy.
For information, the government has issued Government Regulation (PP) Number 26 of 2022 which regulates the increase in coal royalties. In this new regulation, the coal royalty rate is set to increase to 13.5 percent from the previous 7 percent.⧫

In July 2022 alone, this subsidiary of PT Astra International Tbk (ASII) sold 526 units of heavy equipment. This number is up 11.20% from sales in June 2022 of 473 Komatsu units.
When compared with the same period last year, sales in July 2022 rose 159.11%, where sales in July 2021 only reached 203 units.
Previously, UNTR decided to raise Komatsu's sales target for heavy equip- ment this year. UNTR increased sales to 4,800 units from the previous 3,700 units.
United Tractors Corporate Secretary Sara K. Loebis said the upward revision of the target was based on the results of discussions with the principal and also the results of market analysis. "We have adjusted our sales projections while still monitoring market movements until the end of the year," said Sara.
Sara said that the ability of producers/
principals to produce tools certainly cannot be accelerated quickly, but gradually. "That's why our projections need to be adjusted to the principal's ability," she continued.
This means, in the first seven months of 2022, UNTR has realized 70.8% of this year's heavy equipment sales target.
Meanwhile, UNTR has used capital expenditure (capex) of Rp 3.1 trillion until the first half of this year. The capex absorption is equivalent to US$ 209 million of the total capital expenditure prepared for this year of US$ 750 million-US$ 800 million.

“Proyeksi penjualan kami sesuaikan sambil tetap memantau pergerakan pasar sampai akhir tahun,” terang Sara.
Sara mengatakan, kemampuan produsen/

DAILY NEWS UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022
Given the solid demand for heavy equip- ment, Prayoga assesses that an upward revision of the sales target is still possible if the supply side recovers.
Recently, UNTR through PT Energia Prima Nusantara or EPN officially added its share ownership in PT Arkora Hydro Tbk (ARKO), the operator of the Mini Hydro Power Plant (PLTM).
The total value of the purchase transaction reached Rp 176.5 billion, so that the total ownership of the Astra Group through UNTR in ARKO increased to 31.49%.
BRI Danareksa Sekuritas assesses that the investment value per potential relative capacity made by UNTR is relatively cheap at US$ 1.77 million per megawatt (MW) compared to the PLTM guidelines provided by the Ministry of EMR of US$ 2 million per MW.
BRI Danareksa Sekuritas maintains a buy recommendation with a target price of Rp 39,500 from the previous Rp 34,000.
Meanwhile, NH Korindo Sekuritas Indonesia analyst Arief Machrus recommends buying UNTR shares with a target price of Rp 38,000. NH Korindo Sekuritas sees the increasing production target of consumer companies' energy commodities will keep the demand for UNTR heavy equipment high.⧫
Mengingat permintaan alat berat yang masih solid, Prayoga menilai revisi naik target penjualan masih mungkin terjadi jika sisi pasokan pulih.
Adapun baru-baru ini, UNTR melalui PT Energia Prima Nusantara atau EPN resmi menambah kepemilikan saham di PT Arkora Hydro Tbk (ARKO), operator Pembangkit Listrik Mini Hydro (PLTM).
Total nilai transaksi pembelian tersebut mencapai Rp 176,5 miliar, sehingga total kepemilikan Grup Astra melalui UNTR di ARKO bertambah menjadi sebesar 31,49%.
BRI Danareksa Sekuritas menilai, nilai investasi per potensi kapasitas relatif yang dilakukan UNTR relative murah yakni US$

especially mining companies that are indicated to be collaborating with illegal mines or Mining Without Permits (PETI).
"Currently, it is still being discussed with the Task Force (Satgas) and is being collected,"
said Arifin, quoted on Saturday (27/8/2022).
According to him, the RKAB-RKAB which have a direct positive influence on the government will certainly be maintained.
However, those that are problematic or blurry will be disciplined.
Moreover, it is certain that state losses are quite large due to rampant illegal mining of tin mineral resources.
“Mining companies that get additional results beyond their plans can reduce the potential for state revenues. Even though the government wants to maximize state revenues," he said.
The Task Force that was formed immediately acted under the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves).
To publish PETI activities, the Government through the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investments, the Ministry of Politics, Law and Security, the Ministry of EMR together with the Ministry of Forestry and Environment (KLHK), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the National Police continue to coordinate to find the right action scheme.
Previously, the Director General of Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of EMR, Ridwan Djamaluddin, said that PT Timah Tbk's losses every year reach trillions of rupiah due to rampant illegal mining.
"Every year PT Timah Tbk loses Rp 2.5 trillion due to illegal mining. We are also looking at the damage caused by illegal mining, 123,000 hectares of critical land caused by illegal mining, we don't want to pass the damage on to our children and grandchildren," said Ridwan.
tegas Arifin dikutip Sabtu (27/8/2022).
Apalagi dipastikan kerugian negara cukup besar akibat maraknya tambang ilegal sumber daya mineral timah.
Padahal pemerintah ingin memaksimalkan penerimaan negara," ujarnya.
Sebelumnya, Dirjen Minerba Kementerian ESDM, Ridwan Djamaluddin mengatakan kerugian PT Timah Tbk setiap tahun men- capai triliunan rupiah akibat maraknya tambang ilegal.

Copper price rises on China demand optimism
MINING.COM Staff Writer

OPPER prices rose for a second straight session on Friday as hopes grew that fresh stimulus measures by China would boost demand amid declining inventories.Copper for delivery in September rose 2.4% on the Comex market in New York, touching
$3.78 per pound ($8,316 per tonne).
The most-traded September copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange climbed 1.7%
to 63,480 yuan ($9,260.66) a tonne by the midday break.
Copper has rebounded by 17% since touching 20-month lows on July 15, but it is still down 25% from a record peak hit in March.
“The new stimulus policies announced by China and the new infrastructure projects that will be coming into the market are expected to boost the demand,” said He Tianyu, a copper demand analyst at CRU Group.
“Also, a major factor is the relatively tight supply in the market and very low inventory.”
China’s unwrought copper imports are up nearly 6% while concentrate shipments are around 7% higher so far this year, encouraged by the fall in price, according to Capital Economics, a London-based research firm. In contrast, cargoes of iron ore, for which China is significantly more reliant on imports than copper, are down 3.5%.

The Chilean state-owned miner said it now expects output to reach between 1.49-million and 1.51-million tonnes this year, down from a previous forecast of 1.61-million tonnes.
The guidance cut was disclosed in a letter to Chile's regulator late on Thursday, in which Codelco mentioned the redesign it was forced to implement at its Division Ministro Hales mine after a landslide late last year, lowering recovery levels at the site.
It also said geomechanical reasons and material handling system issues affected the century- old Chuquicamata mine.
"All efforts will continue to be made so we can achieve the highest possible level of production by the end of the year," interim chief executive Andre Sougarret said.
Codelco has also faced fatal incidents recently.
In mid-July, the company stopped all the works in charge of its Vice Presidency of Projects after the death of an operator in the Rajo Inca expansion and later another at its Chuqui Subterranea project, an expansion of Chuquicamata. Read full story
In June, the firm's chairman Maximo Pacheco had told Reuters the annual production goal would be maintained at 1.7-million tonnes while he was in charge, including for this year.⧫
Whitehaven profits surge on rising coal prices

HITEHAVEN Coal has reported a record net profit after tax of $2 billion for the year ended June 30, 2022, and EBITDA of $3.1b, a significant increase on the $204.5m in the prior year. The outstanding year results also include:
An 8 per cent improvement in safety performance as measured by a total recordable injury frequency rate of 5.4
Run-of-mine managed production volumes of 20m tonnes, which was within guidance range
Record revenue of $4.9b underpinned by an achieved average coal price of $325/t (compared with $1.56b revenue and $95/t average price in the prior year)
Cash generated from operations of $2.6b compared with $169.5m in the prior year.
During FY22, all senior bank debt was repaid and $1b of net cash was held on the balance sheet at June 30, versus $808.5m of net debt at the same time in 2021.
A fully franked final dividend of 40 cents per share will be paid on 16 September, taking the full year dividend to 48c per share.
After announcing a 10 per cent on-market share buy-back in February 2022, 76.37m shares were bought back in H2 FY22 for an average price of $4.75 and a total investment of $362.6m.

In H1 FY23, Whitehaven aims to complete the 10 per cent buy-back within the previously announced cap of $550m. The board will seek shareholder approval to increase its share buy- back program at the Company’s Annual General Meeting in October.
Whitehaven chief executive officer Paul Flynn said the longer-term under-investment in energy sources needed to supply baseload capacity to growing populations and economies had contributed to a widening gap between supply and demand.
“In FY22, we saw global energy shortages intensify as a result of the tragic conflict in Ukraine and associated sanctions against Russian coal and gas,” he said.
“Coal prices are at record levels and customers are focused on energy security now more than ever before. We have worked hard to position ourselves to maximise the opportunity arising from historically high prices.
“Despite COVID-related absences, labour constraints and weather interruptions, our team delivered solid operational and product quality improvements in FY22.”
Flynn said demand for high-quality seaborne thermal coal is expected to remain strong throughout FY23 and high-CV coal prices should continue to be well supported.
“We expect fo deliver higher ROM production and coal sales in FY23 compared with FY22, and we are focused on maximising margins including managing inflationary cost pressures,”
he said.
“We will also continue to progress and refine plans for our Vickery (NSW) and Winchester South (Queensland) development projects in FY23 to position the company to bring on additional capacity if the Board determines appropriate returns can be delivered.”⧫
Global nickel, lithium and cobalt markets to be in surplus in 2022 – Antaike
T
HE GLOBAL markets of nickel, lithium and cobalt - three of the key metals used in electric vehicle batteries - are expected to be in surplus in 2022, an analyst with Chinese state-backed research house Antaike said on Friday. The nickel market could see an excess of 111,000 tonnes globally in 2022 and a surplus of 122,000 tonnes in 2023, swinging from a deficit of 157,000 tonnes in 2021, said chief analyst Xu Aidong at the Antaike China battery metals conference.
New capacity in Indonesia could raise global nickel production 20% annually in 2022 to 3.14 million tonnes and another 8% in 2023 to 3.41 million tonnes, data from Antaike showed.
Antaike forecast average price of nickel on the London Metal Exchange to fall an annual 20%
in 2023 to $20,000 a tonne, following a 35% jump in 2022 to $25,000 a tonne that was partly due to an LME nickel trading crisis in March. However, short-term nickel price could be supported by rising ore and electricity costs. A potential Indonesian nickel export tax would also push up short-term prices, she added.
Daily News Update Page 21
DAILY NEWS UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022
"Once tax is imposed, nickel prices will rise in short term. But it's unlikely to last as production ramp-up would exert some downward pressure on the market," Xu said.
LITHIUM AND COBALT
The global lithium market is expected to be in surplus of 30,000 tonnes lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) this year, expanding from a 6,000-tonne LCE surplus in 2021.
However, the Chinese lithium market bucked the global trend. Antaike forecast a deficit of 12,000 tonnes LCE for China in 2022.
Chinese lithium prices surged as demand from the booming EV industry outpaced slow growth in the upstream sector due to slow approvals and emission restrictions, Xu said.
China's recent power rationing in Sichuan and Zhejiang provinces - both major lithium production hubs - also lent support to prices. "Lithium prices will stabilise only when supply growth matches demand growth," Xu said.
Meanwhile, the global cobalt market could see a bigger surplus of 8,000 tonnes in 2022, compared to a 2,000-tonne overhang in 2021, Antaike data showed.
Weak demand will pressure cobalt prices in both Chinese and ex-China markets, said Antaike analyst Liu Yimin.
China's lithium carbonate battery grade spot price has had a spectacular run Global nickel market balance Cobalt prices could fall further as the global market might face bigger surplus in 2022.

China needs to review EV battery emissions, CATL founder says
Bloomberg News

HINA should boost initiatives to study and monitor carbon footprints across the electric- vehicle battery supply chain because the nation has “apparently fallen behind,” according to Zeng Yuqun, chairman of leading battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.China is one of the world’s major vehicle-battery production centers but seems to have lagged behind other countries in terms of handling emissions in the manufacturing process, Zeng, founder of the Ningde, Fujian-based company, said Saturday at the World New Energy Vehicle Congress in Beijing.
Representatives at the meeting suggested the government should follow international standards and urged it to: establish an up-to-date carbon-emission database; encourage enterprises to improve production facilities; invest more in low energy-consumption products; and further develop battery-recycling businesses.

DAILY NEWS UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022
While emissions from electric vehicles also depend on the source of power generation, they are generally a fraction of those from traditional cars. However, there has some concern raised by the amount of pollution during the production process of the batteries that power them.
Some electric vehicle makers are “blindly” chasing bigger products that offer longer ranges, which lead to a higher consumption of energy per unit and therefore of resources, Chen Hong, chairman of SAIC Motor Corp Ltd., said at the gathering. “These should not be counted as truly low-carbon products.”
Chen and executives also expressed their concerns over the increase in costs of raw materials, which they say has helped restrict the further development of the new energy vehicle industry in China.
“The companies on the mid-to-lower part of the value chain, in particular carmakers, are enduring huge cost pressure,” Chen said. “We are all working for the miners.”
Lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite are crucial minerals used in lithium-ion batteries. Market commodity costs for lithium carbonate, specifically, have been surging for over a year, with prices averaging $70,650 a ton in China at the end of July 2022, up almost eightfold from September 2021, according to a BloombergNEF report.
Soaring prices
The soaring prices of raw materials and imbalanced distribution over the value chain has been a drag on many automakers’ profitability, which is missing the industry’s forecast, Zhu Huarong, chairman of Chongqing Changan Automobile Co., said.
Despite ongoing cost pressure and Covid disruptions, deliveries of new-energy vehicles more than doubled in July to about 486,000 units — accounting for 26.7% of the new auto market, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association, which raised its annual sales forecast to 6 million vehicles from 5.5 million.
Zhu said he believed it was time to set an agenda to stop the sales of gasoline cars. The technological development of new energy passenger vehicles — wholly electric cars, plug-in hybrids and range-extended EVs — is “relatively mature,” and could provide the preliminary conditions for the halting of the local internal combustion engine vehicle market, he said.⧫
India interested in Russian thermal coal - Russian Energy Ministry

NDIA is interested in Russian thermal coal, Deputy Energy Minister Sergey Mochalnikov said in an interview with RBC TV channel."The Indian market has always been considered promising for us. There is a separate document on it, signed at last year's Russian Energy Week. It indicates volume of 40 million tonnes of coking coal, but partners are also asking for thermal coal," he said.

After entry into force of EU restrictions, about 64 million tonnes, that is, "a quarter of our exports became unavailable for us," Mochalnikov said. "Accordingly, a quarter of our export volume needs to be placed in other markets," he said. According to Mochalnikov, Russian coal is now being replaced by coal from Australia and Indonesia. "Those countries that have begun supplying Europe, they are freeing up those markets that we should be striving to tap," he said.
"There are agreements, there are signed documents - there are memorandums of intent, there are documents with commitments," the deputy energy minister said, without disclosing with whom exactly Russia has agreed on coal supplies. This will be announced during Russian Energy Week.
Russian companies are currently looking for new supply chains due to the restrictions imposed by Europe, Mochalnikov said. "The saddest thing is that this will lead to an increase in the end price of our coal products in new markets," he said.
Among constraints for increasing supplies in other directions, Mochalnikov cited RZD's Eastern Polygon, which "is not developed to the infrastructure and volume needed to accommodate all comers."⧫
