ABSTRACT
Zabila Rizky Pradipta, C1307025, 2013, AN ANALYSIS ON TRANSLATION
QUALITY AND TECHNIQUES OF SONG LYRICS TRANSLATION IN
“BROTHER BEAR” MOVIE. Thesis: English Department, Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta.
This research is a descriptive qualitative study which concentrates on examining the translation techniques used in translating the song lyrics in
“Brother Bear” movie and assessing the translation quality in terms of accuracy
and acceptability.
This research uses two sampling techniques, total sampling technique and purposive sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researchers used total sampling technique. The total data are 150 lines selected from the four songs. The purposive sampling technique was used to determine the three people as raters.
From the analysis, there are thirteen techniques employed in translating the song lyrics. There are 56 data using amplification (24.78%), 58 data using reduction (25.66%), 67 data using literal translation (29.64%), 3 data using structural shift (1.32%), 11 data using class shift (4.87%), 3 data using unit shift (1.32%), 9 data using modulation (3.99%), 11 data using synonymy (4.87%), 1 data using particularization (0.44%), 2 data using generalization (0.89%), 2 data using discursive creation (0.89%), 1 data using adaptation (0.44%), and 2 data using conversion of metaphor to sense (0.89%).
The results of the analysis on the translation accuracy reveal that there are 88 data (58.66%) considered accurate, 58 data (38.66%) considered less accurate, and 4 data (2.66%) considered inaccurate. Meanwhile, the analysis on the translation acceptability shows that there are 106 data (70.66%) belonging to acceptable translation, 43 data (28.66%) belonging to less accurate translation, and 1 data (0.66%) belonging to unacceptable translation.
