Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia | repository.upi.edu | perpustakaan.upi.edu

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

This chapter presents the conclusion of the analysis and discussion in the previous

chapter. The overall summary of the result regarding the topic and also some of

the suggestions which are expected to be helpful for further related research

studies are also presented in this chapter.

5.1. Conclusion

Based on the the analysis which is already explained in the previous section, this

study employs Mujiyanto’s (2001) concept of semantic shift categories which are

used as a tool to analyze the data: generalization, specification, substitution,

deviation, and reversal. Semantic shift categories in this analysis are used in order

to explore of how the translator is influenced by using semantic shift categories of

two languages, English and Indonesian in Tintin comic series.

The findings and discussion section also answers the research questions of:

(1) what semantic shifts categories found in the analysis? and (2) what do the

shifts signify? It identifies five categories of semantic shift found in the analysis.

They are: generalization, specification, substitution, deviation, and reversal.

Generalization category contains a process which influences the meaning

in the target text in three ways, which (1) decreases the level of importance; (2)

misses the details; and (3) creates ambiguous meaning. Specification process

signifies the sentences which are too general and can be transferred by the

translator into a new form in the target language. Substitution category contains a

process which influences the meaning in the target text in three ways, which (1)

depicts the comparison about what is being told to the target readers as something

easier to explain; (2) gives a broader use of words without breaking the rules in

the process of translation nor changing the plot of the story; and (3) depicts the

actual events in the story that help to carry the readers’ interpretation towards the

meaning in the target language. Deviation process shows that the changes in the

analysis depict the use of polite words to express unusual terms in the target

text which refers to the word’s meaning at that time presented in the plot of the

story.

It can be concluded that the result of the analysis regarding the use of

semantic shift categories in the process of translation may have proven that there

are several aspects which may influence the translator in the ways the translator

transferring the source language into other appropriate words and sentences in the

target language. The different point of view of cultural differences may also have

influence the translator to make the translated text to be more acceptable to the

readers. However, the translator still convey the same messages as the source text.

It also can be seen from cultural words which are translated into the target text,

especially in substitution category of translating idioms.

In addition, from the result of the analysis it also can be seen that the

translator uses the code of ethic of translation in Indonesian to make the target text

more acceptable to the readers.

5.2. Suggestions

This study aims to explore two comic books from Tintin comic series in the

perspective of cultural differences by using semantic shift categories as the tool to

analyze the data. However, since the analysis focuses on the meaning, it can also

be explored by using other perspectives in linguistic field such as pragmatics,

syntax, semiotic, etc. Semantics analysis, for instance, can be used to explore

whether or not readers can grasp the meaning conveyed by the translator. In

addition, this research hopefully can provide a useful contribution in the study of
