THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING DRAW LABEL CAPTION TECHNIQUE IN TEACHING WRITING OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to find out whether Draw Label Caption(DLC) is effective or not in teaching writing of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016. The population of this study is the tenth grade students ofSMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016 which consists of seven classes. Total number of the students is 214. Therefore, the population is 214 students. The researcher uses 69 students as the sample of the research. Which are divided into 2 groups, those are experimental and control group.The first is the experimental group (A) which consists of 33 students, and the second one is the control group (B) which consists of 36 students.The data collection was carried on from April, 11thApril to 23rd May 2016 with the cooperation of the principal and English teacher of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen. The research result shows that teaching writing using draw label caption is effective. The mean of experimental group is 76.45 whereas the mean of control group is 67.80 (76.45>67.80). Furthermore, based on the hypothesis testing, the result of t-value is 78.6, using 5% level significance and the degree of freedom is 52. From the t-table, the value of t-table is 0.05. It shows that t-value is higher than the value of t-table. Therefore, using Draw Label Caption technique in teaching writing of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen ise ffective.

13 A. Background

Language is one of important thing in our life. We always use language to express our ideas, thought and opinion not only by speaking but also by writing.

According to Brown (2004:4), language is a system of arbitary conventionalized vocal, written or gestural symbols that enable members of given community to communicate with one another. Therefore, language is very important to learn because by learning language hopefully we can communicate well with others. In indonesia, English is considered as foreign language.

Moreover, English is taught since Elementary School up the University level. The goverment considers that English is important to be taught in indonesia as English is now used internationally in this global era. It will enable student to access and develop science, technology and cultures, and also to develop the relationship among countries.

There are four language skills in Engllish: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Among the four skills above, The researcher suggests that writing is the most difficult skill. Writing skill requires more capabilities than other language skills and needs special preparation, such as, sentence, structure, vocabulary, and paragraph development.

Writing is a part of language skill. Writing is a skill that is exclusive domain of scribes and scholar in educational or religious institutions (Brown,2000: 218). Nowadays, writing becomes the most difficult in studying English, especially in senior high school students. For senior high school students level, for example, the teaching and learning English starts from introduction the dialogue text. It will continue to the descriptive, recount, narrative, anecdotes and report texts. The researcher takes descriptive text as the topic of this research. According to Hartono (2005:5), descriptive is a kind of genre used to describe a particular person, place or thing.

It can also be used to introduce new vocabulary or review vocabulary. The basic technique is those students draws a picture, finally label everything in the picture and then give an overall caption or summary of what is happening in the picture.

Knowing that teaching writing is important, the researcher conducts the research entitled

“The effectivenes of Using Draw Label Caption (DLC) Technique in Teaching Writing Descriptive Text at the Tenth Grade Students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen in the Accademic year of 2015/2016”

B. Research Method

The research was conducted at SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen. It is located at Jalan Kusuma No 71, Kebumen. The research took the tenth grade students at SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016. The research was carried out from 1st April to 30rd May 2016. The research was divided into three sections. The first was pre-test. It was conducted on April, 11th, 2016 in class X APAand April 14th, 2016 in class X APB. The second section was giving treatment by using draw label caption in teaching writing of experimental class and using teacher based learning in teaching writing of control class. The students in class X APA are giventreatment that on 12th and 19thApril 2016, and the last was giving post test that was conducted 17th April 2016 in class X APA and 23th May 2016 in class X APB.

C. Finding and Discussion

In this section, the researcher is going to describe the interpretation of the research result about descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. The following are the details:

15 1. Descriptive Analysis

After describing the analysis in the previous section, the researcher will discuss more about the interpretation of the writing ability result of experimental group and the writing ability result of control group.

a. The writing ability Result of Experimental Group

The highest score of the students of experimental group of the tenth grade of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen is 83 andthe lowest one is 68. The mean of experimental group is 76.45, and thestandard deviation of it is 3.95. The mean is included in the interval of68 to 70.

It means that the students of experimental group of the tenth grade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen have good writing ability.

b. The Wiring ability Result of Control Group

The highest score of the students of control group of the tenthgrade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen is 77 and the lowest one is 55. The mean of control group is 67.80 and thestandard deviation of it is 4.99. The mean exist in the interval of 55 to58. It means that the students of control group of the tenth gradestudents of SMK Batik Sakti 2Kebumenalso have good writing ability.

2. Interpretation of Hypothesis Testing

In this section, the researcher will interpret the hypothesis testing. A mentioned above, the hypothesis of this research says “the use of Draw Label Caption (DLC) technique in teaching writing of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016 is effective”.

From the previous analysis, it shows that with the number of samples (N1=33 and N2=35) and the level of significance is 5%, the result of the computation of t-value is 7.86. Based

on the value in the t-table forN1=33 and N2=35 and the significance level is 5%, the value of t- table is2.000. The computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table that is7.86>2.000.

Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that the use of Draw Label Caption (DLC) technique in teaching writing of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016 is effective. As the researcherhas interposed the theories related to her research entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Draw Label Caption (DLC) technique in teaching writing of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen in the Academic Year of 2015/2016 ”.

After computing t-test polled variance, and after knowing that the hypothesis is accepted, the theory meets the fact in this case. Then, from the computation exists in the previous section; the researcher concludes that the use of Draw Label Caption (DLC) technique in teaching writing of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen in the academic year of 2015/2016 is effective.

D. Conclusion and Recomendation

Based on the analysis data and discussion about hypothesis inprevious chapter, the researcher concludes it is effective of using Draw Label Caption technique in teaching writing of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen.

It can be seen from the result of post test of experimental group and control group. The mean of experimental group is higher than the mean of control group. The mean of experimental group is 76.45 whereas the mean of control group is 67.80 (76.45>67.80). furthermore, based on the hypothesis testing, the result of t-value is 78.6. using 5% level significance and the degree of freedom is 52. From the t-table, the value of t-table is 0.05. It shows that t-value is higher than the value of t-table. Therefore, using Draw Label Caption technique in teaching writing of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMK Batik Sakti 2 Kebumen iseffective.

Considering the result of this research, the researcher would like to present some recomendation. For the teacher: The teacher should use interesting technique in teaching. Draw

Label Caption is the interesting technique that can be used to teach descriptive text to the student. Draw Label Caption can develop student interest in writing. For the student: The student should participate in every activity that is done by the teacher because studying English using Draw Label Caption will make them interested and they will like to write it. For other researcher:

Hopefully, would make the similar research for bette improvement in teaching learnig process.
