45 + 23= ___

1. ) To start adding on the open number line, draw a line.

2.) Then, put the largest addend on the left side of the number line. For example, 45 is the largest addend so the number 45 is written on the left side of the number line.

3.) Look at the second addend ( 23). Since there are two tens in the number 23, draw two, large hops of 10 on the number line. Label the hops.

4.) Look at the second addend (23). Since there are three ones in the ones place, draw 3 small hops of 1 on the number line. Label the hops.

5.) Starting at the number on the left side of the number line (45), skip count by the number on each hop to find the sum. The sum is 68.
