Review

Novel by Milan Kundera, first published in 1984 in an English translation and in a French translation as L'Insoutenable Legerete de l'etre. In 1985 the work was published in the original Czech as Nesnesitelna lehkost byti, but it was banned in Czechoslovakia until 1989. Set against the background of Czechoslovakia in the 1960s, the novel concerns a young Czech physician who substitutes a series of erotic adventures over which he thinks he can maintain control for becoming involved in his country's politics, where he feels he can have no power or freedom. Inevitably, he is drawn into Czechoslovakia's political unrest. In a parallel vein, he is forced to choose among the women with whom he is involved. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

A young woman in love with a man torn between his love for her and his incorrigible womanizing; one of his mistresses and her humbly faithful lover—these are the two couples whose story is told in this masterful novel. In a world in which lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and by fortuitous events, a world in which everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. Hence, we feel "the unbearable lightness of being" not only as the consequence of our pristine actions but also in the public sphere, and the two inevitably intertwine.

2) Characters (5 stars) - Tomas it the intellectual womanizer. Tereza is the innocent villager he sweeps up--fragile, romantic, imaginative. Sabina is the mistress, confident and sexual, testing the boundaries of power and roles. Franz is Sabrina's other lover, the academic who loves the idea of revolution, and so loves Sabina because her Czech-ness represents that, even though she could care less. All these characters were unusual, all were deep, all were drawn and dissected fascinatingly.

3) Theme (5 stars) - This is a story about relationships. About love and sensuality and sex and faithfulness and jealousy and betrayal and misunderstanding. It's about how we all see the world differently, yet must interact with each other. But this is also a story about invaders and the oppressed. About how you respond, and how they respond, and what that means.

4) Voice (5 stars) - Kundera clinically dissects and investigates the psyches of his characters, but he is not cold and sterile in his dissections. He is warm, caring, compassionate. In this way he reminds me of a father to his grown children of characters. He knows them well, is curious about their decisions, gives them their distance, but in the end always roots for them to come out okay. This is an unusual approach towards characters and story, and I found it brilliant and engaging.

5) Setting (4 stars) - Czechoslovakia in 1968 during "Prague Spring" is a fascinating time and place to stage a novel--how a city responds to a bloodless invasion, and the farce of the police state the follows.

6) Overall (5 stars) - The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a beautiful piece of art, and Kundera is a philosopher poet. Not only would I recommend it, I would read it again.

One of my favorite books of all time, Milan Kundera is the perfect example of how Czech writers present story and ideas. The entire feel is at the same time Bohemian and down to earth, and just feels so very Czech. The story takes place during the Prague Spring period of Czechoslovak history in 1968. The main characters are Tomš and Sabina and the relationship between them. Of course, Tomš is married and Franz, the lover of Sabina. We share their infidelities and feelings and have a glimpse into the intellectual and artistic life of Czech society during this time, when Communists still ruled. The main theme of this work is love and sex and how they relate and inter-relate and it has strong overtones of Nietzsche’s ideas of eternal recurrence (a concept that the universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur, in a self-similar form an infinite number of times across infinite time or space.). Hence the "unbearable lightness" of the story which is in fact, very heavy at times, but in a way that leaves you wanting more...

was a descriptive romantic novel at times, but it is still one of the greatest books I have read. This style of writing is very different from what most do now, there is not one specific narrator except for the authors voice and his own thoughts about his characters. He not only explores his characters while he is writing, but how the relationships between them progress while skipping forwards and backwards through the timeline.

A major achievement from one of the world's truly great writers, Milan Kundera's magnificent novel of passion and politics, infidelity and ideas, encompasses the extremes of comedy and tragedy, illuminating all aspects of human existence.
