Sufism is a divine, holy and eminent theme of cultural heritage but also a fascinating and prophetical legacy of humanistic philosophy. The impact of sufism is universal and everlasting on culture. It may be best described as a mystical practice that emphasizes on certain unique rituals for guiding the seekers of spirituality into a direct encounter with God.
The topic of present research work being submitted for the doctorate degree is "A Critical Study of Sufistic Literature Produced in Rohilkhand". In this study all the important prose and poetic works produced during this period in the region of Rohilkhand is taken into account and critically analysed. The thesis consist of an introduction and eight chapters and a conclusion.
The first Chapter deals with two parts. The first part describes Tasawwuf and it's historical background, derivation of words of sufi and tasawwuf and various relevant works of saints, siifis, muhaddis and fuqaha in relevant perspective. The second part of first chapter has been again divided into two parts, viz Rohilkhand: its historical, cultural and literary background, and a number of distinguished ulema of tasawwuf and their thoughts and philosophy has been discussed at par.
In the second chapter which is again sub-divided into two parts, the first part describes the literary and scholarly atmosphere of Rampur in context of Persian literature. In the second part the selected literary works, prose as well as poetry of sufis of the region has been critically analysed.
The third chapter deals with the region of Bareilly. It is divided into two parts. The first one gives a detailed description of literary atmosphere 'and
-philosophical thoughts of the sufis of this district during that period. The second part is a critical study of the prose and poetic creations of the sufis.
The fourth chapter dealing with Moradabad is also divided as usual into two parts. The first part deals with literary, social and historical importance of the region and in the second section the work of important sufi of Moradabad has been studied and his Anwar-ul-Arfeen has been critically taken into account. In this book the biographies of some sufis and terminologies of Tasawwuf has been discussed at length.
The fifth chapter emphasizing on Badaun region is divided into two parts; the first one deals with the literary and cultural importance of Badaun and the second part includes the study of Diwan-e-Kashfi of Salamatiillah Kashfii who is a renowned siifii poet and writer.
The sixth chapter deals about Amroha. In this chapter also the division has been made as per previous pattern and the cultural and literary position of the region is discussed in first part. In the second part Maqased- ul-Arifin written by
Shah Azadiiddin Chishti Sabri has been taken into account.
The seventh chapter of this thesis focuses on Shahjahanpur, it's social literary and cultural atmosphere during that time. The second part includes the critical evaluation of Hidayat-nt-Taiebeen by Jamal Mohammad. In this book the writer has emphasized on different issues of Tasawwuf such as Istikhara,
Baiat, Azkar, Ashgal, Namaz-e-Tahajjud and Ishraq has been discussed in
The eighth chapter deals with the work produced in Sambhal. The first part of this chapter deals with the importance of the region and second one comprised of the mystical creation of Sambhal i.e Sirajul Arifin written by Mohd.
Bahadur Khan Sambhali. The book is written for the achievement of the right path
for its' seekers and to attain the salvation.
After these eight chapters a conclusion had been written which besides having a summary of the topics taken into account in this thesis also has an assessment of trends of sufistic Persian prose and poetry produced in the literary fertile area at Rohilkhand.
