i ABSTRACT

The research has been conducted with the title “The Problem of Students' Communication Skill in Public Speaking Class, with the background of the problems faced by students when communicating in class. This study aims to determine the communication skills problems faced by students in public speaking and why do they have problems.

It uses qualitative methods, namely observation, and interviews. The subjects of this study were grade IX students of SMP Negeri 5 Panyabungan for the academic year 2021-2022. Data were collected through observation and interviews and analyzed by qualitative methods.

The results showed that the students of SMP Negeri 5 Panyabungan had problems with communication skills, namely poor in grammar, lack of intonation, lack of body movement, and can't speak loudly. and the reason why students have these problems is because of lack of vocabulary, lack of pronunciation, panic, lack of practice, and the last lack of confidence.

Blessing and peace be upon to our prophet Muhammad SAW who has brought and guided human beings to become civilized and educated in terms of science and technology.

The researcher would like to thank my beloved, great and beautiful mother Sofriani, my beloved father Nasrin Lubis, and 4 brothers who have given encouragement, love, advice, morals, material, and support to the researcher in addition to being patient and careful before, during and after his studies at UINSU.

May Allah SWT always bless them, thank you for all their love.

In completing this thesis, the researcher faced so many difficulties and problems but did not stop this effort to improve it, and it seems impossible to do without a lot of help from others. Therefore, the researchers would like to thank:
