This study was aimed to explain how Tik Tok application shapes students’
pronunciation and motivation in learning English. The participant of this study was 15 students of tenth social science major of MA At-Tadzkir Kaliaren Grobogan.
This study used pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design and focused on students’ pronunciation and motivation to be analyzed. Test and questionnaires were used as the instruments of the data collection. The results exposed that the post-test result using Tik Tok Application is higher than the pre-test. The minimum result of pre-test is 20 and the maximum result of pre-test is 60. Whereas, the minimum result of post-test is 60 and the maximum post-test is 100. There isa significant effect of using Tik Tok Application in teaching pronunciation which got the significant value (2-tailed) is equal to 0.000 < 0.005. The results from the indicator in ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) motivation shows the high interest of students in learning pronunciation using the Tik Tok application. Further, it was also found several factors that affected the students’
pronunciation, such as: native language, the age factor, amount of exposure, phonetic ability, attitude and identity, motivation, and mother tongue influence. The factor that most influences students are the amount of exposure. The students emphasized that they improved their pronunciation skills with a lot of exposure to English pronunciation through short videos in the Tik Tok application. It can be concluded that Tik Tok application gives effect on students’ pronunciation and increase students’ motivation according to the categories in the ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) motivation.
INTRODUCTION
Pronunciation is one's ability to understand knowledge of one's voice system and affect the meaning in the English context of one's speech (Ifadah & Aimah, 2012).
Good pronunciation, stressing, and intonation are some crucial factors in order to understand someone’s speech. In English, different sounds will have different meanings so it becomes the difficult for Indonesian learners to learn pronunciation.
Moreover, the differences among English and their mother tongue which adds the degree of difficulty in learning pronunciation.
There are two reasons why English is difficult to be mastered by students, especially in speaking skills. First, the students began to learn English by reading instead of speaking. Thus, they are accustomed to reading, not speaking whereas the writing in English is different from the pronunciation. They also feel ashamed and not confident to speak in English because they cannot pronounce it well or have a ‘medok’ accent. Therefore, many differences make students lose their motivation to learn pronunciation (Prasetiya et al., 2017).
The loss of motivation in learning pronunciation makes students less active and reluctant to speak English. Latha (2012) argues that the inactivity of students in class is caused by their lack of motivation. This causes students to be passive and afraid to speak in class. Whereas motivation is one aspect that is closely related to student achievement (Aimah & Ifadah, 2014). This is because the two things are related to each other. Therefore, an interesting media and not monotonous media is needed for students to learn pronunciation in order to increase students' motivation in learning English because when learning English, high motivation is one of the factors that affect mastery of English (Mulyadi, 2017).
Based on my pre observation at tenth grade in MA At-Tadzkir Kaliaren, students' motivation to learn pronunciation has a medium category with a percentage of 52.6 % while students’ difficulties in learning pronunciation have a high category with a percentage of 68.4%. Therefore, it can be concluded that students’ difficulties in learning pronunciation have a high category and students' motivation is in the medium category.
To conquer students' difficulties in learning pronunciation, they need media or learning methods that they like, besides that they can provide input or examples in pronunciation that are in accordance with the rules and are able to increase their motivation in learning pronunciation. As students said that they need a media that makes it easier for them to learn pronunciation. They need a media in the form of video or audio to make it easy to practice, such as video from Tik Tok or YouTube.
The reason why I chose and was interested to do the research about Tik Tok is that most of them have Tik Tok Application and are familiar with it. Besides that, I also found some videos which can help the students increase their pronunciation skill and learning motivation on Tik Tok Application, such as
#pronunciationchallenge, #announcementchallenge, #duetchallenge, etc.
The Tik Tok application is a social network that can be used as a learning medium. However, Miarso reminds us that in using learning media, teachers are required to choose media that can meet children's learning needs, attract children's motivation, according to the child's age, and can convey messages from the teacher well (cited in Mahnun, 2012).
Although the Tik Tok application was blocked in July 2018 because it contained negative content and was reopened in August 2018 with various considerations and new regulations, apart from these problems, look at the fact that the number of users has reached more than 10 million in Indonesia and the majority of school-age children (students), it can be seen that Tik Tok can be processed into interactive and fun educational media for students because the Tik Tok app is very good, loved and wanted by millennials, mostly children (Aji & Setiyadi, 2020).
Based on the problem and pre observation mentioned, I chose the topic about Examining How Tik Tok Application Shapes Students’ Pronunciation and Motivation in Learning English. Therefore, it is important to find out the effectiveness of the Tik Tok application which is booming among teenagers as a new learning medium.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This research conveyed a pre-experimental design or commonly known as pseudo-experiment. I used one group pre-test and posttest design for this research.
Yuwanto (2019) emphasizes that the cause of the increase in the independent variable can be seen from the difference between the pre-test and posttest so that it can accurately determine the effect of treatment. This research was conducted at MA At-Tadzkir Kaliaren Grobogan tenth grade social science. The reason I chose this school is because I have conducted pre-observation there and students were familiar with this application. After conducting the research, the data obtained were analyzed based on the instruments used in this study, specifically test results and questionnaires.
RESEARCH FINDING AND DISCUSSION
1. How Tik Tok Application Shapes Students’ Pronunciation Table 4.1
The Result of Paired Samples t-Test
Table 4.1 shows the mean result of the paired samples t-test is -30.667. The second, Column Std. Deviation represents the mean dispersion and the score is 10.328. The third, Column Std. Error Mean shows the index of the variability that can be expected in sample repeatability and the score is 2.667. The fourth, Column 95% Confidence Interval of the Difference provides an estimate concerning boundaries between differences in means in 95% of all samples and the score is lower -36.386 and upper -24.947. The fifth, Column t score is -11.500, and df score is 14.

2. The Students’ Motivation on Learning Pronunciation Using Tik Tok Application
The results from the first indicator in ARCS motivation (Attention) shows the high interest of students in learning pronunciation using the Tik Tok application.
Students pay attention and focus on short videos in the Tik Tok application because they enjoy learning pronunciation using the Tik Tok application. In addition, students are also interested in finding other videos that are still related to the material. Therefore, as many as 90% of students agree that their attention is excellent when studying. Based on percentage, it is known that Tik Tok application can be used as a new tactic in attracting and maintaining student motivation, especially their attention in learning pronunciation.
The second indicator is Relevance in which the Tik Tok application is very relevant to be used as a pronunciation learning medium. 88% students voted to agree and strongly agree because the relevance of the material with a short video in the Tik Tok application makes students easily understand the pronunciation material they are studying to improve students' pronunciation skills. Based on percentage, the Tik Tok application can be used as a learning medium because it is related to the daily lives of students and is related to the material being taught in the book.
The third indicator is Confidence. Table 4.6 shows that the level of students' confidence in learning pronunciation using the Tik Tok application in this study.
When uploading videos, students are cautious with their pronunciation. They always make sure whether the pronunciation is correct or not before uploading, so this affects their confidence. Therefore, 90% of students feel confident in their pronunciation abilities when learning pronunciation with the Tik Tok application.
The results obtained based on these data show that the Tik Tok application is able to form students' self-confidence in learning pronunciation.
The fourth indicator is Satisfaction, showing that 87% of students satisfy learning pronunciation using the Tik Tok application and also want to speak like
native speakers because of their score. So based on these indicators, we can relate that satisfaction is one of the most influential factors in student motivation. So, it can be concluded that students are satisfied with the results obtained when studying pronunciation using the Tik Tok Application.
This research in line with Kurt & Kecik's research (2017). They state that the four categories of ARCS motivational model exert impacts on students' motivational level. The strategies that belong to these four categories are proved to be essential elements in the process of teaching and learning English. These elements can measure the level of student motivation in learning pronunciation using the Tik Tok application. To sum up, the Tik Tok application can increase student motivation according to the categories in the ARCS motivation.
3. Factors that Affect Pronunciation Learning
Based on the findings and the results of closed-ended questionnaire, there are some factors that affect pronunciation, such as: native language, the age factor, amount of exposure, phonetic ability, attitude and identity, motivation, and mother tongue influence. If sorted based on student statements in the questionnaire, the factor that most influences students are the amount of exposure because with the amount of exposure one gets, a person is able to have good phonetic abilities, not having difficulties with the difference between their mother tongue and native language. then followed by high motivation when studying pronunciation which of course will affect their attitude and identity. According to students, the factor that most does not affect pronunciation is age factor. This is because anyone can learn pronunciation without seeing age.
Although there are changes in students' abilities after learning pronunciation through the Tik Tok application. This does not make all students have a good score.
This is due to the factors that affect students differently. The factors that affect pronunciation learning must be considered by teachers and students. So that, teachers can provide material with the right method. In addition, students must pay attention to these factors to improve their ability in pronunciation. This research in
line with Gilakjani’s research (2011) different factors have been studied in conjunction with pronunciation in an attempt to describe what impacts a learner's learning of English pronunciation has.
