ABSTRACT

THE APPLICATION OF PROBLEM SOLVING APPROACH TO

IMPROVE THE COMPETENCE OF NARRATIVE QUESTION IN

MATHEMATICS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The research aims to improve the competence of narrative question in mathematics of elementary school through the problem solving approach. The research is conducted in one of the SDN in Bandung. The research involves 20 of fifth grade of elementary school students. The research was

motivated by the students’ low competence of narrative question in

mathematics of addition and substraction material that reflected from the test of pre-cycle. From 20 students, it only has 45% or nine students who can solved the narrative fraction. Meanwhile, the 55% or 11 students failed to

solve the narrative fraction. The problem was caused by the students’

incomprehension toward the steps in solving the narrative writing. The method was adapted from Kemmis and Mc Taggart in two cycle. the instruments of research are: RPP, LKS, evaluation sheet, documentation and observation sheet of student and teacher through the problem solving approach. the steps are: 1) understanding of problem 2) planning the solving 3) doing the test 4) re-examining the process and result. the research found that the application of problem solving approach to improve the competence of narrative question in the material of addition and substraction of fraction is

improving in each cycle. it can be seen from the result of students’ exercise
