Accessible online learning: supporting disabled students H810 Presentation pattern September to January

Module description

This module will be of interest to people working in adult, vocational, higher and further education who provide disabled students with access to, or support for, online learning. It will provide:

 an understanding of the accessibility issues faced by students, module designers and support staff working with online and distance education.

 insights into educational policy issues that address accessibility and disability

 an introduction to the research literature underpinning concepts, technical accessibility solutions and student support solutions

 a framework to assess the accessibility and support needs of learners

 the opportunity for participants to evaluate and create examples of accessible elearning for their own contexts.

Person specification

The person specification for this module should be read in conjunction with the generic person specificationfor an associate lecturer at The Open University.

As well as meeting all the requirements set out in the generic person specification, you should have:

 knowledge and experience of good practice in elearning

 experience of supporting students via online forums, email or the Web  familiarity with recent literature on elearning

 an enthusiasm for experimenting with emerging technologies

 an awareness of the main challenges facing disabled students in elearning. It would be an advantage to have some experience of:

 supporting disabled students through elearning  assistive technologies

 instant messaging  mobile technologies  blogging and wikis

 knowledge management tools. Additional information

 H810 is presented electronically. Tuition is carried out using online forums; assignments are submitted, marked and returned electronically.

 Experience of using electronic forms of distance teaching and support would be useful but training will be provided.
