Abstract
This study investigated parents’ role toward students’ English learning at Bethany School, Salatiga. The purpose of this study was to discover and find out some potential difficulties which were faced by parents in supporting their children studying in an immersion program and the way of parents support their children in learning English as second language in immersion program. The subjects of this study were five parents of students at Bethany School, Salatiga. The data for the study were collected through several interview results. The analysis of the data shows that parents have difficulties in helping their children English proficiency such as understanding school materials lack of confidence in educating their children at home, lack of English proficiency and lack of understanding materials. Nonetheless, though the parents found difficulty in supporting their children English development, it was found that they tried to solve them by (1) facilitating their children with enough learning access such as English books and private tutors (2) guiding their study at home and (3) participating in their children learning at school.
Introduction
Nowadays people are encouraged to learn and understand English as an international
language. This is possibly because “English is the major language that is used for many aspects
in the world such as news, international business, government, science, maritime communication, international air traffic control, music, and movies even in some countries where it is a minority language” (Kitao, 1997, p. 3) Furthermore, according to Crystal (2000), English has received prestigious place as an international language, not only because of expedition and expansion of thousand years ago, but also because of economic development in twentieth century along with the power of media.
