APPENDIX

SUMMARY

The House at The Briar Lake, begins with Hannah’s parent. Laurence is betrayed

by her husband named Rick. He embezzled money in his wife’s school that makes

Laurence loses her job and her teacher license. Finally they divorcee and Rick run

away. Of course Laurence has to take the responsible for the losing money.

During the investigation, Hannah and Laurence move often because they do not

have money anymore. Hannah also has to leave her school and loses her friends.

This situation causes deep depress for Hannah.

In the summer, Laurence’s friend named Bertie offers the house around the Briar Lake. She accepts and hopes that this summer is the happy summer for her

daughter after all the unpleasant moment. She wants her daughter makes friends

again there and can forget the memory about her father. However, during the

summer Hannah still keeps silent, she doesn’t interest to talk with her mother. She

always expresses her sullen face, but when her mother asks about her feeling, she

doesn’t like to share with her mother. In the Briar Lake, there is a lot of animal

such as dog, a goat, birds, and iguana. Common children like to play with the

animal, but Hannah doesn’t like to play with the animal, even she always does

something apathetically.

Her characteristics are different when she still in Minneapolis, her city. She has

father. She feels trauma with her father’s bad attitude, but when she have friend,

she can cheers herself by playing with her friends. She feels upset when she

knows that her father runs away. This case increases her trauma about her father.

One day, a man named Michael comes. He is Bertie’s nephew. He comes

to run his law practice there. He stays in the same house with Hannah and her

mother during her office was built. Initially, Hannah doesn’t like him. Actually she doesn’t like man because she will remember about her father’s anger. A long

with the time, she likes Michael because he is a kind man. He cares of Hannah

and her mother. Hannah becomes dreaming Michael to be her new father.

In Briar Lake, she doesn’t have friend. She feels lonely, that is one of the reasons why she doesn’t like to play with her pet and always made gloomy face.

She fears to make friend because she have ever get taunts from the children there

when she tries to get along. And even when she gets the friend request from a

child, she still doubts with herself, can she make friend? Her desire to have

someone both father and friend makes her characteristics changes.

In the end of the story, Hannah achieves her dream to have Michael

becomes her father. She also can trust child who have ever taunted her when she

gives apologies. Finally her self-doubt whether she can make friend or not can be
