Editor : Farid Firdaus

Still Burning, Coal Prices Set a Record!

Maesaroh, CNBC Indonesia

C

OAL prices are still at home in an upward trend. In trading on Wednesday (13/4/

2022), the price of coal contract in May closed at US$ 322.35 per ton. Up 1.45%

compared to the previous day.

This level was the highest since March 14, 2022 or in the last month where the price of coal at that time touched US$ 336.15 per tonne.

Coal prices soared 7% on Tuesday (12/4/2022) after weakening the previous day. In a week, the price of coal has strengthened 12.12% point to point but in a month it is still down 4.1%. Within a year, the price of coal has soared 259.16%.

The surge in coal prices is still fueled by fears of a lack of supply and tensions in Russia-Ukraine relations. Coal import ban sanctions that will be carried out by the European Union and Japan will make the competition to get coal supplies even tighter. In fact, even without sanctions, coal supply is already in a tight condition due to weather and war problems.

Australia and Indonesia as the world's main suppliers of coal face production limitations due to weather. Meanwhile,...

Masih Membara, Harga Batu Bara Catat Rekor!

Maesaroh, CNBC Indonesia

H

ARGA batu bara masih betah dalam tren pendakian. Pada perdagangan Rabu (13/4/

2022), harga batu bara kontrak Mei ditutup di level US$ 322,35 per ton. Menguat 1,45%

dibandingkan hari sebelumnya.

Meanwhile, other large exporters such as South Africa are facing logistical problems in meeting supply. The United States and Colombia are now the hope of many countries to meet the supplies left by Russia.

The limited supply when demand increases is what makes coal prices soar.

Supply problems have made many countries unable to import coal as needed.

Vietnam is reported to have experienced electricity supply problems due to declining coal supplies. Vietnam's coal imports from Russia in the first quarter of this year fell 31 percent to 804 thousand tons. However, nominally the import value jumped 60% to US$ 202.5 million.

China as the biggest consumer of coal reportedly imported 16.42 million tons of coal in March 2022. This figure is higher than 11.23 million tons in February 2022, which is the lowest level since December 2019. However, the number of imports in March this year is actually 40% lower than March 2021.

In the first quarter of 2022, China as a whole imported 51.81 million tons of coal, down 24.2 percent compared to the same period last year. The decline in imports was due to a lack of supply after Indonesia banned coal exports in January. The decline in imports was also caused by shipping problems due to the Russian- Ukrainian war.

Following the high price of coal, FocusEconomics has raised its coal price projection for this year to US$ 240 per ton, up 27 percent compared to the previous projection. Rating agency Moody's Investors Services also raised their coal price projection to US$ 275 per tonne over the next 12 months.

"The European Union's ban on coal imports will boost coal prices in the short term. Prices are expected to decline gradually after Australian production increases," said FocusEconomics.

In addition to supply issues, the increase in coal prices was also triggered by the lack of abating of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Most recently, the United States (US) is known to provide additional weapons assistance equivalent to US$ 800 million or equivalent to Rp. 11.48 trillion (exchange rate of Rp.

14,350 per US dollar) for Ukraine.

"The Ukrainian military has used the weapons at our disposal to devastating effect. As Russia prepares to intensify its attacks in the Donbas region, the United States will continue to provide Ukraine with the capability to defend itself," Biden said in a statement.

Biden also accused Russia of committing genocide in Ukraine by carrying out mass massacres of civilians in the country. CNBC INDONESIA RESEARCH TEAM (mae/mae)

Terbaru, Amerika Serikat (AS) diketahui memberikan bantuan persenjataan tambahan setara US$ 800 juta atau setara Rp 11,48 triliun (kurs Rp 14.350 per dolar AS) untuk Ukraina.

TIM RISET CNBC INDONESIA (mae/mae)

P

T MERDEKA Copper Gold Tbk (MDKA) cukup getol dalam mencari pendanaan di pasar modal. Emiten tambang mineral logam ini tercatat akan melakukan sejumlah aksi korporasi guna membiayai agenda bisnisnya.

(10)

Daily News Update Page 10

First, MDKA will increase its capital by granting pre-emptive rights (PMHMETD) or rights issue of 1.20 billion shares. This corporate action received approval for a rights issue at the Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders (EGMS) on January 27, 2022 ago.

The exercise price for the rights issue is set at Rp 2,830 per share. Thus, the amount of funds that will be received by MDKA in this corporate action is Rp 3.41 trillion.

The Hong Kong-based electric battery company, Hongkong Brunp and Catl Co., Limited (Brunp) acts as a standby buyer.

Brunp will purchase all the remaining new shares in the maximum amount of 757.09 million at the exercise price.

MDKA will use the proceeds from this rights issue for four purposes. First, around 60% will be used to allocate to PT Bumi Suksesindo (BSI) to fund part of the capital expenditure needs, payment of part of the principal debt and working capital.

Second, around 22% will be used to allocate to PT Batutua Tembaga Raya (BTR) to partially fund capital expenditure and working capital needs.

Third, around 9% will be used to allocate to PT Batutua Kharisma Permai (BKP) to partially fund capital expenditure and working capital needs.

Fourth, around 9% will be used to allocate to PT Puncak Emas Tani Sejahtera (PETS) to fund part of the capital expenditure needs.

In addition to the rights issue, MDKA will also issue debt securities (bonds). MDKA will issue bonds with a principal value of Rp 2 trillion, namely Merdeka Copper Gold Sustainable Bonds III Phase II Year 2022.

This is part of the Shelf-Registered Bond III Merdeka Copper Gold with a total value of Rp 9 trillion. In the first phase, MDKA has issued bonds of Rp 3 trillion.

Harga pelaksanaan rights issue ditentukan sebesar Rp 2.830 per saham.

Perusahaan baterai listrik asal Hong Kong, yakni Hongkong Brunp and Catl Co., Limited (Brunp) bertindak sebagai pembeli siaga.

(11)

Daily News Update Page 11

Analyst for Pilarmas Investindo Sekuritas, Desy Israhyanti, assessed that the corporate action that was intensively carried out by MDKA was appropriate and the effect was certainly positive on MDKA's performance.

This is in line with the potential increase in metal demand for renewable energy transformation which is being intensified to support the net zero emission program in 2060.

Desy sees that MDKA's business diver- sification through its collaboration with Brunp, which is the largest electric vehicle battery supplier in the world, provides a great opportunity for the financial profile, both in terms of income diversification and cash flow in the future.

“Moreover, the domestic economic recovery is underway and currently Bank Indonesia (BI) interest rates have not increased. So there is still momentum to get low interest rates for funding in the debt securities market," Desy explained to Kontan.co.id, Wednesday (13/4).

Desy sees that the demand for gold and copper, which are MDKA's main commodities, will continue to exist. As the function of these metals are used as industrial raw materials, gold is also used as an investment instrument.

Moreover, gold is an alternative investment that is also stored for a long period of time. The current sentiment is the market uncertainty that has brought the gold price higher. "However, it will move down if the market stabilizes again,"

he continued.

Government to Form a Special Coal Entity in June 2022

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) Arifin Tasrif said the government would form a special agency alias coal entity in June 2022.

The agency will be under the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan.

"So indeed this special entity is still in the process of being institutionalized and the target is June. Later the coordination will be under the coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment, the target is June and involves associations," said Arifin in a Hearing Meeting (RDP) with Commission VII DPR RI, Wednesday ( 13/4).

He said the special coal entity would also involve business associations, one of which was the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin). Later, there will be several programs carried out by the institution.

"There will be several scheme programs that will be carried out but the point is that later the assignment will be given to several large miners," explained Arifin.

According to Arifin, the agency will collect a fee from the company to cover the difference between the price of coal in the market and the DMO price of US$70 per ton.

"The price difference will be covered through contributions, so the amount of the fee depends on the capacity and specifications of the company," said Arifin.

On the same occasion, Deputy Chairperson of Commission VII DPR RI Maman Abdurrahman said the special entity for coal must be realized immediately. The reason is that the price of coal continues to soar, while the DMO is set at only US$70 per tonne.

"The long-term solution must be realized immediately by forming a special entity if you want this to be sorted out immediately because otherwise there will be problems with DMO,"

explained Maman. (tdh/aud)

(13)

Daily News Update Page 13

(tdh/aud)

After Copper, Supply Crisis Hits Nickel Robertus Andrianto, CNBC Indonesia

Since March, the production of refined nickel in China has decreased due to the limited supply of raw materials and the wave of the pandemic that has hit China. This has supported the world nickel price to remain above the level of US$ 30,000/ton.

On Wednesday (13/4/2022) at 15.25 WIB, the world nickel price was recorded at US$

32,740/ton, up 0.84% compared to yesterday's closing price.

The supply of nickel in China is still under pressure, so the world nickel price is predicted to remain high. This is because the raw material for nickel smelting cannot enter the factory so that production is hampered.

The shortage of nickel supply is getting worse due to the effect of restrictions on mobility in China in an effort to suppress the spread of Covid-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019). On April 12, China reported 1,513 new daily cases, up from the previous day's 1,272 cases. The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases is 168,362.

The pandemic situation has not subsided in South China, making it difficult for manufacturers to pick up and transport goods. So downstream factories generally take goods from inventories in North China. This resulted in a limited supply of refined nickel on the market in China and a general increase in spot premium prices.

Nickel Sulfate, which is used as a raw material for making electric vehicle (EV) batteries, is also in short supply. The shrinking supply due to the high price of raw materials has forced factories to limit their production.

Meanwhile, inventories in warehouses monitored by the London Metals Exchange (LME) were recorded at 73,230 tonnes on April 12. The number has fallen by 72.32% since April 2021 which was the peak of last year's inventory. (ras/ras)

Setelah Tembaga, Krisis Pasokan Serang Nikel Robertus Andrianto, CNBC Indonesia

Pada Rabu (13/4/2022) pukul 15.25 WIB harga nikel dunia tercatat US$ 32.740/ton, naik 0,84% dibandingkan harga penutupan kemarin.

(14)

Daily News Update Page 14

(ras/ras)

5 Largest Coal Producing Countries in the World, Number 4 Has the Most Reserves in the World

I. Husni Isnaini

Coal is now the prima donna. Quoting trading economics, the price of coal as of April 11 yesterday was perched at the level of USD303.5 per ton, or around Rp.4.35 million (exchange rate of Rp.14,300). In fact, if you look back a few weeks, the price of this black gold reached Rp. 6 million per ton (7/3/2022).

One of the triggers for the heating up of coal prices is Russia 's war with Ukraine . As a result of the Russian invasion, a number of countries declared to ban the import of coal from the Red Bear Country.

Cash world coal market reacted. The ban could stifle coal supply to meet world demand which is still high, even though the world agreed to reduce energy use from coal during the COP26 Summit in Glasgow, late last year.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) noted that in 2019 world coal demand reached 7.6 billion tons. So last year, the IEA estimated that global coal consumption would reach 7.43 billion tons.

A ban on imports of coal from Russia will reduce the world's supply. The reason is, Russia is one of the largest coal exporters in the world with 262 million tons in 2021.

However, Russia is not the number one largest coal exporter in the world. The number one predicate as the largest coal exporter in the world is held by Indonesia. Based on statista.com data in 2019, Indonesia's coal exports reached 455 million tons.

Last year (2021) the Ministry of EMR noted that Indonesia's coal exports reached 435 million tons. That number increased slightly when compared to 2020 which reached 433.8 million tons.

(15)

Daily News Update Page 15

Even though it is ranked first as the world's largest new coal exporter, Indonesia is not the largest coal producing country in the world. There are two other countries that rank above Indonesia.

The following are the five largest coal-producing countries in the world:

1. China

Citing data from the Statistical Review of World Energy released in July 2021, China has established itself as the largest coal producing country in the world. In 2020, China will extract 3.9 billion tons of coal from the bowels of the earth. China's position as number one has been realized since 2007 with a figure of 2.53 billion tons. Meanwhile, for its proven coal reserves, China is in third place with 143.1 billion tons.

Despite being the world's largest coal producer, this country is also greedy for fossil energy materials. China is also listed as the largest coal importer in the world with a figure of 298 million tons (2019/statista.com).

2. India

The country of Hindustan is listed as the second largest coal producing country in the world.

In 2020, India's coal production will reach 756.5 million tons. India's proven coal reserves are 111 billion tons. Together with China, India is also the second largest coal importer with 247 million tons.

3. Indonesia

Indonesia sits in the third position as the largest coal producing country in the world.

Indonesia's coal production in 2020 will reach 562.5 million tons. Now in 2021, Indonesia's coal production will be 606.2 million tons. Meanwhile, based on the Statistical Review of World Energy, Indonesia's proven coal reserves are only 34.8 billion tons, far less than India and China.

Despite having the least coal reserves among the five other countries (United States, China, India, and Australia), Indonesia is the largest exporting country. Last year (2021) the Ministry of EMR noted that Indonesia's coal exports reached 435 million tons. It seems that Indonesia's coal production is intended for export, the rest is for domestic purposes.

If Indonesia continues to consistently extract coal with this range, the Ministry of EMR has predicted that Indonesia's coal reserves will run out within the next 20 years.

4. United States of America

This superpower country does not seem to have ambitions to become the largest coal producer in the world. In fact, with its technological capabilities coupled with its coal reserves, plus the superiority of capital, the United States can clearly occupy all rankings related to coal, from the producer to the largest coal exporter in the world.

Imagine, America has the largest proven coal reserves in the world with a figure of 249.9 billion tons. Even though they have been exporting coal since 1980, American exports are only around 100 million. In 2020, America's coal exports were only 63 million tons. In fact, its coal production reached 484.7 million tons.

5. Australia

Kangaroo country is also not ambitious to be a coal extractor from the bowels of the earth.

With coal reserves reaching 150.2 billion tons and sitting in second place after America, Australia's coal production is only 476.7 million tons. However, Australia is ranked second as the world's largest coal exporter. Last year, Australia's coal exports reached 390 million tons (IEA). (uka)

5 Negara Penghasil Batu Bara Terbesar di Dunia, Nomor 4 Punya Cadangan Terbanyak Sejagat

I. Husni Isnaini

Batu bara kini menjadi primadona.

Kontan pasar batu bara dunia bereaksi.

International Energy Agency (IEA) mencatat, tahun 2019 permintaah batu bara dunia mencapai 7,6 miliar ton. Nah tahun lalu, IEA memperkirakan konsumsi batu bara sejagat menembus angka 7,43 miliar ton.

Berdasarkan data statista.com tahun 2019, ekspor batu bara Indonesia mencapai 455 juta ton.

Tahun lalu (2021) Kementerian ESDM mencatat ekspor batu bara Indonesia menembus angka 435 juta ton.

1. China

Tahun 2020 produksi batu bara India mencapai 756,5 juta ton. Cadangan terbukti batu bara India sendiri sebanyak 111 miliar ton. Bersama China, India juga menjadi negara kedua terbesar pengimpor batu bara dengan angka 247 juta ton.

(17)

Daily News Update Page 17

3. Indonesia

Produksi batu bara Indonesia tahun 2020 mencapai 562,5 juta ton. Nah di tahun 2021 produksi batu bara Indonesia sebanyak 606,2 juta ton. Sementara berdasarkan Statistical Review of World Energy cadangan terbukti batu bara Indonesia hanya sebanyak 34,8 miliar ton, kalah jauh dibanding India dan China.

Tahun lalu (2021) Kementerian ESDM mencatat ekspor batu bara Indonesia menembus angka 435 juta ton.

4. Amerika Serikat

Negara adi daya ini sepertinya tak berambisi menjadi penghasil batu bara terbesar di dunia.

Padahal, dengan kemampuan teknologi ditambah dengan cadangan batu baranya, plus kedigdayaan modal, Amerika Serikat jelas bisa menduduki semua peringkat terkait batu bara, mulai dari produsen hingga eksportir batu bara terbesar sejagat.

Bayangkan, Amerika memiliki cadangan terbukti batu bara terbesar di dunia dengan angka 249,9 miliar ton. Meski sudah melakukan ekspor batu bara sejak 1980, ekspor Amerika hanya berkisar di angka 100an juta saja. Tahun 2020 ekspor batu bara Amerika hanya 63 juta ton.

Padahal, produksi batu baranya mencapai 484,7 juta ton.

5. Australia

Tahun lalu ekspor batu bara Australia mencapai 390 juta ton (IEA). (uka)

Indonesia aims to set up coal levy agency by June By: Reuters

Indonesia's government aims to establish a "special entity" by June to help secure coal supplies for the state power utility company and collect levies, energy minister Arifin Tasrif told parliament on Wednesday.

Following a coal supply crunch at the start of the year that was blamed on miners' poor compliance with a domestic sales requirement, a senior cabinet minister had proposed forming an agency to collect levies and using that revenue to help the utility PLN pay for its coal needs at market prices.

Since then however, the government and a parliamentary committee have agreed that PLN will continue to buy coal at a maximum price of $70 per tonne.

(18)

Daily News Update Page 18

"There are a number of schemes and programmes being discussed, but the main point is several big miners will be assigned to supply the coal (to PLN) and the price gap would be paid by the levy," Arifin told parliament members on Wednesday.

Indonesia requires coal miners to sell 25% of their output to the domestic market at capped prices to help the government control energy prices at home. However, miners' compliance with that rule deteriorated after global coal prices surged and they preferred to export their supplies instead.

Indonesia banned coal exports in January and set stricter rules for the domestic sales requirement.

Arifin told parliament on Wednesday the size of levies imposed on coal miners would depend on the size of their operations and other specifications, while other details on implementation were still being discussed.

Shanghai zinc price soars to near 15-year high MINING.COM Staff Writer

Shanghai zinc prices rallied to their highest since July 2007 on Wednesday on worries over supply shortages in top consumer China.

The most-traded May zinc contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose as much as 5.4%

to 28,995 yuan a tonne ($4,554.16), before settling up 3.2% at 28,395 yuan ($4,459.92).

Benchmark zinc on the London Metal Exchange hit $4,521.50, the highest since March 8.

Prices of the metal, used to galvanize steel, hit a record high of $4,896 a tonne last month.

“Zinc inventories have drawn down sharply and the situation is worsening for European smelters to keep their margins positive amid fears of another power crisis,” said ANZ analyst Soni Kumari.

“The market sentiment for industrial metals was boosted by easing of transportation bottlenecks in China … further boost came from increasing economic support.”

Market analyst Fitch Solutions Country Risk & Industry Research has recently revised its 2022 zinc price forecast higher by more than 20% to $3,500 per tonne.

In a report, Fitch argues that metal prices are being bolstered by the energy crisis stemming from the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine that has led to many smelters halting or reducing zinc metal production.

Inventories

Concerns over spot supply have been growing in the zinc market this month, with a sharp rise in orders to withdraw stocks from LME warehouses helping to lift prices toward a record high.

Zinc stocks in LME-registered warehouses are at 120,825 tonnes, their lowest since June 2020 and down more than 40% since December.

China’s refined zinc output fell on both an annual and monthly basis in March as the covid-19 outbreak disrupted transportation of raw materials, state-backed research house Antaike said.

The nickel price jumped 4.9% to 215,060 yuan ($33,778.88) a tonne, after rising to its highest since March 31 earlier in the session. (With files from Reuters and Bloomberg)

Australia’s Orica, H2U form green ammonia venture By Kevin Morrison

Australian chemicals and explosives firm Orica and Australian hydrogen developer The Hydrogen Utility (H2U) have agreed on an initial deal to explore opportunities for an exclusive domestic green ammonia offtake and supply agreement, as well as looking into the potential for a green ammonia export terminal at Gladstone, Queensland.

The potential agreement will see green ammonia supplied directly to Orica's Yarwun manufacturing plant in Gladstone from H2U's proposed Yarwun green ammonia production plant, Queensland minister for state development Steven Miles said.

Orica's Yarwun plant produces nitric acid, ammonium nitrate and sodium cyanide. Nitric acid is used to make ammonium nitrate and in turn is made using ammonia. Sodium cyanide is also made using ammonia.

(20)

Daily News Update Page 20

H2U plans to develop the H2-Hub at Gladstone to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia that will source electricity from around 10,000MW of renewable energy generation capacity to be established in the Queensland region of the National Electricity Market covering east Australia to support the project, H2U said in its planning documents.

The H2-Hub will require around A$4.7bn ($3.5bn) of investment with the plant to have a planned capacity of up to 3,000MW of electrolysis and up to 5,000 t/d of green ammonia production.

A final investment decision for the first phase of development is scheduled by 30 June 2023.

The H2-Hub Gladstone plant is scheduled for operational activity to begin in 2025, with the latter expansion phase to take place between 2027 and 2030.

Orica is also involved in another hydrogen project, which is a study to develop a hydrogen hub in the Hunter valley region of New South Wales with Australian upstream and utility firm Origin Energy.

H2U is also developing a hydrogen project, the Eyre Peninsula Gateway in South Australia's Port Bonython region. Japanese engineering firm Mitsubishi Heavy Industries said in November 2020 that it had agreed to invest in H2U.

India's coal production grows 8.5% to 777.23 million tonnes in FY22

Coal minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday said the country's coal production grew 8.5 per cent to a record 777.23 million tonnes (MT) in FY22.

The statement assumes significance amid reports of coal shortages due to rising demand for electricity with the onset of summer season.

In the previous fiscal, India's coal sector achieved a record production of 777.23 MT as compared to 716 MT in FY21, registering a growth of 8.5 per cent, Joshi said in a statement.

The country's coal despatch also increased by 18.43 per cent to 818.04 MT during the last fiscal as against 690.71 MT in 2020-21.

Addressing a meeting of the Standing Committee on Safety in Coal Mines, Joshi reiterated that safety of coal miners is a 'top priority'.

He also advised all coal companies to ensure that there is no dearth of fund for ensuring safety measures.

In October last year, many states complained about shortage of coal for power plants and some of them also faced electricity outages for several hours a day.

The world's top 10 largest silver mines in 2021 - report By Vladimir Basov

Kitco ranked the world’s top 10 largest silver mines based on reported production for the 2021 calendar year. The ranking excludes Vedanta’s Sindesar Khurd mine, located in India.

(21)

Daily News Update Page 21

Only around 30% of annual supply comes from primary silver mines while more than a third is produced at lead/zinc operations and a further 20% from copper mines. The polymetallic ore deposits from which silver are recovered account for more than two-thirds of the world’s silver resources.

1. KGHM Mining Hub, Poland. 41.9 Moz.

KGHM Polska Miedz’ Mining Hub consists of Rudna, Polkowice-Sieroszowice and Lubin primary copper mines located in Poland. In addition to copper, it is also an important source of silver, gold and other metals. With 41.9 Moz of silver mined in 2021, KGHM Polska Miedz is the largest silver producing operation worldwide.

2. Penasquito, Mexico. 31.4 Moz.

Newmont’s Penasquito polymetallic mine is Mexico’s largest gold producer, consisting of two open pits – Peñasco and Chile Colorado – containing gold, silver, lead and zinc. Penasquito is an open-pit mine that employs flotation-and-grinding processing, in two 50,000-tonne/day sulphide processing lines and a 30,000-tonne/day high-pressure grinding roll circuit.

Penasquito increased silver output by 13% in 2021 to 31.4 Moz and sits second in the list of biggest silver producing operations worldwide.

3. Dukat, Russia. 18.8 Moz.

Dukat silver mine is one of Polymetal’s first and original assets. It is the largest primary silver operation in Russia and Polymetal’s flagship operation. Silver output at Dukat increased by 3%, from 18.2 million ounces in 2020 to 18.8 million in 2021.

4. Antamina, Peru. 18.2 Moz.

Antamina mine is a large copper-zinc-molybdenum-silver-lead operation, located in the Andes mountains 270 kilometres north of Lima, Peru. The deposit is located at an average elevation of 4,200 metres. The owners are BHP Billiton plc (33.75%), Glencore plc (33.75%), Teck (22.5%) and Mitsubishi Corporation (10%). The mine is an open pit, truck/shovel operation. A 302-kilometre slurry concentrate pipeline transports copper and zinc concentrates to the port for shipment to smelters and refineries world-wide.

5. San Julian, Mexico. 16.8 Moz.

The San Julián silver-gold mine in Mexico is Fresnillo’s cornerstone project. The geological potential identified in the region thus far may be sufficient to establish a new mining district in the future. The San Julián mine includes two plants: i) a dynamic leaching plant to treat ore from the veins and ii) a flotation plant with 6,000 tpd capacity to process ore from the disseminated body. Full year silver production increased 26% vs. FY20 due to a higher than expected ore grade.

6. Cannington, Australia. 14.4 Moz.

South32’s Cannington silver-lead-zinc mine, located in north-west Queensland, was a long- time undisputed leader in silver production, with a record 44 million ounces of silver achieved in 2005. Since then, silver output dropped significantly due to reduced silver grades, and Cannington finally lost its number one position in recent years. In 2021 calendar year, silver production at the mine increased 24% to 14.4 Moz.

7. Saucito, Mexico. 12.4 Moz.

Located in Zacatecas, Mexico, 8km SW of the Fresnillo mine, Saucito is one of Fresnillo’s most important assets. Full year 2021 silver production of 12.4 Moz decreased 19.9% vs. FY20 due to a decrease in volume of ore processed and lower ore grade due mainly to the instability issues and the adverse impact of the labour reform.

8. Fresnillo, Mexico. 12 Moz.

(22)

Daily News Update Page 22

Fresnillo’s eponymous mine is one of the world’s oldest continuously operating mines. It is remarkable that mining operations have been recorded at the site as far back as 1554. Full year 2021 silver production was down 8.2% due to a lower volume of ore processed and lower ore grade.

9. Collahuasi, Chile. 9.6 Moz.

The Collahuasi mine is a large copper mine located at high altitude in the north of Chile in the Tarapaca Region. The mine is operated by a joint venture company Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi, in which Anglo American plc and Glencore each hold 44% while the remaining 12% is held by Japan Collahuasi Resources B.V.

10. Greens Creek, USA. 9.2 Moz.

Hecla’s 100%-owned and operated Greens Creek mine in southeast Alaska is one of the largest and lowest-cost primary silver mines in the world. The Greens Creek orebody contains silver, zinc, gold and lead, and lies within the Admiralty Island National Monument, an environmentally sensitive area. Greens Creek is an underground mine which produces approximately 2,100 to 2,300 tons of ore per day. The primary mining methods are cut and fill and longhole stoping.
