ABSTRACT
Novel is one of literature text that people love. E.Lynn Harris’s Not A Day Goes By
is novel that will be discussed in this thesis. The purpose of this thesis is to find
defense mechanism that Basil used in order to survive in certain situation because
of clashing in his mind between id, ego, and superego. Basil is the main character
in that novel. Some theories used in order to help the analysis are: theory of plot,
theory of Three Phychic Zones, theory of defense mechanism. This thesis used
pshycological approach. In every section of plot, character will react when he has
clashing in his mind between id with ego or superego. From that reaction, character
wants to survive in that situation, then character will use one of defense mechanism
to survive. The result from this analysis is reveal true personality of the main

ABSTRAK
Novel adalah salah satu karya sastra yang banyak digemari orang. Not A Day Goes
By karya E.Lynn Harris adalah novel yang akan dibahas di dalam thesis ini. Tujuan
dari thesis ini adalah untuk menemukan mekanisme pertahanan yang digunakan
oleh Basil dengan tujuan bertahan dalam situasi tertentu karena adanya
pertentangan di dalam pikirannya antara id, ego dan superego. Basil adalah karakter
utama dalam novel tersebut. Beberapa teori yang digunakan untuk membantu
penyelesaian thesis ini adalah; teori plot, teori Three Psychic Zones, dan teori
mekanisme pertahanan. Dan pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan
psikologi. Di setiap bagian plot, karakter akan bereaksi ketika mengalami
pertentangan di dalam pikirannya antara id dengan ego atau superego. Dari reaksi
itu, karakter ada keinginan untuk bertahan dalam situasi tersebut, lalu karakter akan
menggunakan salah satu mekanisme pertahanan untuk bertahan. Hasil dari
penelitian ini adalah mengungkap bagaimana sesungguhnya kepribadian karakter
