CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
5.1
CONCLUSION
This study analyzed Basil’s defense mechanism as the
main character that he used seen from his three psychic zones through the
plot of novel Not A Day Goes By. Literature contributes in some majors
parts in human daily life, include the psychology of human, therefore the
writer analyze the defense mechanism and the phychic zones from Basil
based on psychological approach. The writer decided to chose novel Not A
Day Goes By, because this novel has a great story. And the writer used
theory of personality from Sigmund Freud because the psychoanalysis
theory from Freud is very complete. From Three Psychic Zones that
contains of id, ego, and superego, the theory of anxiety that contains of
neurotic anxiety, morality anxiety, and realistic anxiety and the theory of
the defense mechanism that has 9 kinds of defense mechanism. Through
this thesis, the writer hope the reader could understand why every person
has different personality and environmental or situation can change the
personality itself.
Theories that the writer used is theory of plot from Kirzsner and

falling action, and resolution or denoument. The writer also used the
theory Three Psychic Zones, theory of anxiety and theory of defense
mechanism from Sigmund Freud. Plot is used to analyze where Basil had a
clash inside his mind and where the defense mechanism works.
Meanwhile, theory of Three Phychic Zones is used to find out Basil’s id,
ego, or, superego through the plot. Theory of anxiety is used to find out
what anxiety that happened in Basil .Theory of defense mechanism is used
to find out what defense mechanism that Basil used.
From exposition until rising action, Basil always rejected his true
feeling about man. He used the defense mechanism that made him stay
away from his truly feeling. However, at the end of rising action, Basil’s
feeling and mind started loose. He was still on his wedding plan but he still
thought about another man. In climax, Basil started to change his purpose
in life, because Yancey broke his heart, he let himself back with his past
again. Then from falling action until resolution or denoument, Basil
decided to became a gay again. Therefore, from falling action until
denoument, he did not used defense mechanism because his id was
dominant and he always followed his id to get pleasure.
After analyzing Basil’s three phychic zones, the writer analyzing the anxiety in Basil. Basil felt neurotic anxiety and morality anxiety. And
the writer concluded that as the main character, Basil is an inconsistent

He is inconsistent person because in the beginning he decided to
loves a woman and married, but in the end, he still loves a man and being a
gay again. Thus, to deceived people around him, he tried to loves a woman
but its failed, because his desire still to a man. The defense mechanism that
he used just helped him temporary because in the end Basil still followed
his id. Since from exposition until resolution, he couldn’t stand on his principle. He always defeated by his ego and his pleasure.
Also the writer found that Basil is unpredictable person seen from
his action to man from exposition until resolution. His action to some man
showed that he attracted to a man badly. And his action when he was
facing the situation that he broke because of Yancey’s secret, he moved on
not with a woman, but with a man. Also Basil tried to seduce Zurich to be
with him again, but Zurich already left his past life as a gay.
Novel is a part of literature that could bring many story. There are
many kinds of novel, for example for teenager and for adult, mystery,
adventure, or romance. Certainly there is different language between novel
for teenager and adult. Not A Day Goes By is one example of novel for
adult.
Literature may cover other study area. Then, by borrowing
psychology study area, it could help analyze a literature text, for example a
novel. Psychology is a study that analyze human being and human

Not A Day Goes By still could be analyzed by psychological
approach to find character development through plot from the main
character, Basil. Also, this novel could analyze by psychological approach
to find character development, but from the other character, Yancey. As in
