Coal Prices and Others To The
Moon, RI Mining Investment
Sluggish
Anisatul Umah, CNBC Indonesia
T
HE MINISTRY of Energy and MineralResources (ESDM) noted that investment in the mineral and coal mining sector until May 2021 had only reached US$ 1.39 billion or around Rp. 20 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp. 14,400 per US$). The realization of this investment has only reached 23.24% of this year's target set at US$ 5.98 billion or around Rp 86 trillion. This achievement is in fact not as beautiful as the surge in prices for mining commodities such as coal, gold, nickel and copper, which have shown a positive trend since the beginning of the year.
The data was submitted by Ridwan Djamaluddin, Director General of Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of ESDM in a Hearing Meeting (RDP) with Commission VII DPR RI, Monday (08/06/2021).
"Minerba investment from this year's target of US$ 5.98 billion has reached US$ 1.39 billion so far," said Ridwan.
He explained that the company faced several obstacles in pursuing this invest-ment target. For example, the issue of Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL) licensing, borrow-to-use forest area permits, and spatial planning suitability. In addition, according to him, market conditions are also an obstacle because the contract has not been completed, so there are no buyers.

K
Daily News Update Page 4 "There are also obstacles to land
acquisi-tion because it is customary land, social conflicts, there are also obstacles to weather rainfall and Covid-19," he said. Ridwan said that his party will continue to provide support to business entities to increase investment, including providing facilities for compiling information and investment opportunities.
"We help do market sounding, harmoni-zation, and others," he said.
It should be noted that this year's mineral and coal mining sector investment target is set at US$ 5.98 billion, higher than the 2020 achievement of US$ 4.24 billion. But when compared to the investment achievement in 2019 of US$ 6.5 billion, it means that this year's investment target is lower. Meanwhile, the investment achieve-ment in 2019 was also lower than the 2018 achievement of US$ 7.48 billion.
As is known, a number of mining commo-dities are now experiencing a commocommo-dities boom or super cycle because prices hold high positions and are expected to last for a long time.
One of the commodities that continues to grow is coal. Even now, the price of coal contracts on the futures exchange is still at US$ 110 per ton.
The price of this coal has even reached a record high in almost the last decade. At the end of May 2021, the price of coal for the June contract shot 10.19% to US$ 118.9 per ton. This position is the highest since September 2011.
In the last trading last week, Friday (4/6/2021), Newcastle thermal coal contract price fell 2.09% to US$ 110.25. (wia)
(wia)

HE REALIZATION rate of the domesticmarket obligation (DMO) reached 51.8 million tons by the end of May 2021. This was stated by the Director General of Mineral and Coal (Minerba) of the Ministry of ESDM, Ridwan Djamaluddin, during a Hearing Meeting with Commission VII DPR RI in Jakarta, Monday (7/6) ago.
"We report that the DMO has reached 51.8 million tons in May 2021," he said in a release quoted by Kontan.co.id, Tuesday (8/6).
For this year, the government has set a target of 137.5 million tons for domestic coal needs throughout 2021. In other words, the DMO realization figure until May 2021 is only 37.7% of the target set. "We ensure that domestic coal needs will still be met as determined," said Ridwan. In addition to reporting the realization of DMO, Ridwan also conveyed the realization of national coal production. The govern-ment noted that the realization of coal production reached 237 million tons, equivalent to approximately 38% of the production target throughout 2021 which was 625 million tons.
Ridwan said that extreme weather conditions and disasters at the beginning of this year were a challenge for mining companies, especially in carrying out their operations.

INGKAT realisasi domestic marketobligation (DMO) mencapai 51,8 juta ton hingga akhir Mei 2021.
Daily News Update Page 6 "Several obstacles experienced by business
entities include weather conditions and disasters in early 2021," concluded Ridwan.

Daily News Update Page 9 The President Director of Kobexindo
Tractors, Andry Budiman Limawan, as quoted by Kontan, said that this year his party will continue to strengthen and maximize various opportunities, both in the mining equipment sector and outside mining heavy equipment.
"We are optimistic that 2021 will be better. In particular, some of the main supporting factors at this time are positive coal price volatility and a more controlled pandemic," he said.
This is reflected in the improvement in coal prices in the fourth quarter of 2020. Although, Andry admits that the impact does not necessarily directly affect sales of heavy equipment, this condition is believed to be able to provide positive sentiment for the heavy equipment business sector. In addition, since the beginning of this year, KOBX has also made changes and consolidated its management to be more effective and efficient in anticipating existing market conditions. KOBX also focuses on cost strategies to maximize efficiency going forward.
Kobexindo currently has two sales segments, namely mining and non-mining heavy equipment. KOBX continues to strengthen the non-mining segment to strengthen its revenue composition so that it is less dependent on the mining sector. "The non-mining segment is represented by sales of material handling equipment and environmental solutions through our subsidiary, PT Kobexindo Equipment. In addition, in addition to providing heavy equipment repair services, Kobexindo also provides repair services and spare parts for European heavy duty trucks represen-ted by our subsidiary, PT Eurotruk Transindo," said Andry.
Daily News Update Page 10 Andry said, nominally, the zero sales
business line for mining heavy equipment is not as big as mining heavy equipment. However, he believes the sector's prospects are positive and will continue to grow.
This is the reason why coal-fired
power plants are still the
mainstay of Indonesia
Anisatul Umah, CNBC IndonesiaC
OAL-based Steam Power Plants (PLTU)are still Indonesia's mainstay in meeting energy needs. This is because coal is still the cheapest energy source in this country. This was conveyed by the general chairman of the Indonesian Private Electricity Producers Association (APLSI) Arthur Simatupang.
According to him, the price of electricity from New and Renewable Energy (EBT) currently cannot compete with the price of electricity from coal-based power plants. "We know that NRE is not as cheap as PLTU now, but in the future it will be there," he explained in an interview with CNBC Indonesia recently.
In addition, the PLTU can still be relied on to support the base load because it is stable, not limited to certain periods or conditions such as weather, nature, and others.
Meanwhile, according to him, EBT-based power plants still have a number of limitations, for example from wind (wind) and solar power, which depend on...
Ini Alasan PLTU Batu Bara
Masih Jadi Andalan RI
Anisatul Umah, CNBC IndonesiaP
Daily News Update Page 11 which depend on certain conditions and
the economies of scale still need to be improved, and not all points in Indonesia are ideal for building certain types of EBT plants.
"We also know that the Wind Power Plant (PLTB) when the wind is not strong, of course the output of the energy produced drops, as well as solar," he said.
Solar Power Plants (PLTS) need to be combined with batteries to produce electricity for longer because at night of course there is no absorption of sunlight. "With a decrease or increase in peak load, this drastic stability is important," he said. The Executive Director of the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI) Hendra Sinadia said the same thing. According to him, the need for electricity in the future will continue to increase and of course it requires cheap energy, in this case the cheapest energy is coal.
"The industry will develop and of course it will need the cheapest energy and coal," he said.
In addition, the abundant supply of coal in the country and has not been used optimally for domestic purposes is also one of the reasons.
Based on data from the Directorate General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), as of April 2021, the PLTU capacity has reached 34,668 Mega Watts (MW) or 48% of the total 72,889 MW of power plants in the country. The coal mix reached 63.52% of the total energy mix for national power plants.
Daily News Update Page 12 Previously, Darmawan Prasodjo, Deputy
President Director of PLN, said that Indonesia's electricity production in 2060 is estimated to reach 1,800 Tera Watt hours (TWh), an increase from the current 300 TWh. This means that there is still a production shortage of around 1,500 TWh. Coupled with a capacity of 120 TWh from the 35 Giga Watt (GW) power plant project, later, an additional 1,380 TWh of production will still be needed until 2060. "So there is 1,380 TWh of space for the addition of EBT generating capacity. From 2020 onwards, the portion of PLTU capacity will be reduced," he said in a Hearing Meeting (RDP) with Commission VII DPR RI, Thursday (27/05/2021). (wia)
(wia)

India Starts Easing Lockdown,
Coal Prices Continue To Rise
Tirta, CNBC IndonesiaT
HE PRICE of ICE Newcastle thermal coalcontinues to rise again. It's been almost 3 weeks since the coal price has remained strong at US$ 100/ton. The market is still filled with demand recovery sentiment amid supply chain disruptions.
The price of the Newcastle ICE thermal coal futures contract closed up 1% in yesterday's trading. Now the contract price of the stone, which is actively traded, is at US$ 116.75/ton.
China is still struggling to overcome the problem of tight coal supply in its country after informally boycotting coal imports from Australia. As a result, Chinese coal suppliers other than Australia flocked to increase their coal prices.
On the other hand, demand in Japan and South Korea also began to increase. In South Korea there was an unplanned blackout at its nuclear reactor at Shin Kori. This makes the demand for electricity from thermal coal plants increase.
Japan's coal-fired power plant restrictions are also gradually being relaxed. This further supports the increase in world coal prices considering that Asia is the main destination for coal exports.
India, which had experienced a surge in Covid-19 cases, is now slowly easing its lockdown, especially in the capital New Delhi, in line with the downward trend in the number of infection cases. The govern-ment continues to try to boost business activities so that the economy does not get worse.
India Mulai Longgarkan Lockdown,
Harga Batu Bara Lanjut Naik
Tirta, CNBC Indonesia
H
ARGA batu bara termal ICE Newcastlelanjut naik lagi.
Daily News Update Page 17 Rail disruptions in Colombia and Russia
and rail maintenance in South Africa have hampered the distribution of coal, especially for high-calorie ones. Moreover, loading and unloading activities at the Port of Newcastle are also lower than last year. Rising LNG prices also support demand for seaborne coal, as this fuel will become increasingly competitive for power generation. It is this combination of factors that makes the price of coal continue to increase even though western countries continue to try to abandon this fossil fuel. CNBC INDONESIA RESEARCH TEAM (twg/twg)
Miners should target smaller deposits for clean energy era, says PwC
ReutersT
HE WORLD’s biggest miners should consider developing smaller deposits to make the mostof the commodities expected to be in demand during the transition to cleaner energy production, a report on Wednesday said.
Large mining companies have tended to seek the biggest, low-cost, long-life deposits, such as top global miner BHP Group’s iron ore operations in Western Australia that have already been running for more than half a century.
But the global energy transition has opened up opportunities as power grids decarbonise and as demand grows for battery raw materials like nickel, cobalt, lithium as well as copper from electric vehicles, accountancy firm PwC said in a report.
“The way battery minerals present themselves geologically doesn’t necessarily lend themselves to a multi-decade horizon,” PwC Australia Global Mining leader Paul Bendall said.
Daily News Update Page 20 “That might mean the top miners need to recalibrate their investment criteria,” he told Reuters in an interview.
Battery minerals represented less than 3% of the top 40 miners’ total revenue in 2020, the PWC report showed, but there are ample opportunities for that to share to increase, including through buyouts.
Miners have developed significant warchests as governments around the world invested heavily in infrastructure to overcome the disruption caused by covid-19, sending prices sky high.
As well as investing in renewable power generation alongside their mines, some firms may move into processing, Bendall said.
Last week, Tesla’s chair told an Australian mining conference that environmental, social governance (ESG) would be a major consideration in how new energy supply chains develop. Tesla plans to spend $1 billion a year on Australian minerals thanks to its reliable mining industry and responsible production practices.
However, mining companies need to take the safety mindset they have spent the last few years instilling into their work culture and apply that to integrating ESG, the PwC report said. According to MSCI ratings, only four of the Top 40 are considered leaders in managing the most significant ESG risks and opportunities, PwC noted. (By Melanie Burton; Editing by Alexander Smith)
China Considers Imposing Price Controls on Surging Coal Market
C
HINA is considering imposing a cap on the price of thermal coal as it struggles to containstubbornly high energy costs ahead of peak demand over the summer.
One idea under discussion is to cap the price at which miners sell coal, according to people familiar with the plan, who declined to be named because the matter isn’t public. Yulin, a major production base in northwestern Shaanxi province, is already testing a price cap, one of the people said.
Another idea is to enforce a limit of 900 ($141) or 930 yuan a ton on the benchmark price at the port of Qinhuangdao, which would influence other markets nationwide, the people said. Under this scenario, power plants would be advised by the authorities that they can’t buy coal above that level. The second plan is currently being tested at the port by some state-owned generators, one of the people said.
No final decision has been made on whether to adopt price controls and the plans are subject to change, the people said. A fax to the National Development and Reform Commission, China’s top planning agency, didn’t get a response.
Daily News Update Page 21 The Qinhuangdao price hit a record 962 yuan on May 19. It has since moderated to 865 yuan a ton -- still well above the historical average of 547 yuan -- after China ratcheted up its campaign to tame soaring commodities prices before rising costs fuel inflation and harm its economy.
The coal market has soared this year on a combination of factors, including a strong economic recovery from the pandemic, curbs on domestic production after a spate of fatal accidents, and import controls.
China has unsuccessfully tried price controls on coal before, according to local media. In December, the NDRC asked power companies to cap their buying price at 640 yuan a ton after the cost of the fuel surged, Futures Daily reported.
The risk now is that consumption continues to outstrip supply, just as cooling demand peaks over the summer and regulators threaten to shutter more mines to prevent accidents as the nation prepares to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party next month.
In recent years, China has tried to keep prices in a so-called green zone of 500 to 570 yuan a ton, with intervention of some kind all but assured if prices breach 600 yuan. But the market has run so far ahead of these levels that a firmer, albeit higher, cap may now be deemed necessary.
China produces and consumes mostly its own coal and the supply chain is dominated by state-owned firms. But the precedent of imposing price controls could still rattle other commodities markets that rely on imports and the private sector, given Beijing’s broader scrutiny of this year’s record-setting rallies in goods from copper to iron ore and corn.
Also fresh in regulators’ minds is the power crisis of last winter, when unusually strong industrial production and freezing weather created shortages of coal and gas, throwing energy markets into chaos.
Anglo American flags restarts of Australian metallurgical coal mines
By Reuters StaffA
NGLO American said on Thursday that it has restarted underground mining at itsMoranbah North coal mine in northern Queensland state after it withdrew its workforce from the mine following a reading of elevated gases on Feb. 20.
Mining development activities at its Grosvenor mine, in central Queensland’s Bowen Basin, have also resumed this week, as part of the mine’s staged restart of underground mining operations following an explosion in May 2020 that critically injured five workers, it said in a statement.
Daily News Update Page 22 “I would like to thank our workforces at Moranbah North and Grosvenor mines for their patience and dedication in actioning a range of measures to ensure a safe return to mining activities,” Chief Executive of Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal business, Tyler Mitchelson, said.
He said that Anglo would continue with its plans to improve safety via automation and instituting remote working operations.
The two mines accounted for almost half of Anglo American’s met coal, or steel-making coal, production in 2019. Grosvenor produced 4.7 million tonnes in 2019. Moranbah North produced 4.43 million tonnes of met coal in 2020, down from 6.15 million tonnes in 2019. Reporting by Melanie Burton; Editing by Tom Hogue and Muralikumar Anantharaman
Global refined copper demand to rise 31% by 2030 - report
By Vladimir BasovA
CCORDING to the Australian Government's Department of Industry, Science, Energy andResources (DISER), copper consumption is expected to continue recovering and increasing, driven by improving economic growth and copper’s essential role in electrification.
DISER said that after increasing by an estimated 2% in 2020, refined copper consumption is forecast to increase by 5% in 2021, to reach 25 million tonnes. This consumption growth is expected to come from strong industrial and construction activity in China, as well as increased economic activity in India, the US and Italy.
China consumes half of the world’s copper and is the dominant driver of copper market tightness. China’s copper consumption is forecast to grow an average 3% a year to reach 15 million tonnes in 2022, the report indicated.
DISER said that the world copper consumption is projected to grow steadily at an average 2.5% a year over the outlook period, to reach 28 million tonnes in 2026 and 31.1 million tonnes in 2030. Overall, between 2020 and 2030, global demand for refined copper is expected to rise by 31%.
According to the report, growing incomes, increased access to electricity and rapidly advancing technology have driven large increases in world copper demand over the last 100 years. In fact, world copper consumption has, on average, doubled about every 25 to 30 years. And this pattern is set to accelerate with copper-intensive goods and infrastructure set to play an increasing role in the global economy.
