Valentine Kautz, soldier, born in Ispringeu,Badeu, Geruiauy,Jan.T),1828. His parents emigratedtotliiscountryin 1828,and .settled in

Browu

County, Ohio,in 1832.

The

sou servedasaprivate in the l.st regimentof Ohio volunteersinthe

Mexican

war,and onhis discharge

was

appointedto tlusUnited States Military

Academy, where

hewas graduatedin 1852and assignedtotheltli infantry.

He

served inOregon and "Washington Territorytill the civil war, and in the

Kogue

Itiverwars of 1853-'55,

and was wounded

inthelatter,andiu the Indian

war

on

Paget Sound

in 18.)6, iu

which

he

was

alsowounded. In 1855he

was

promoted1stlieutenant,andiu1857

commended

for gallantry

by

Gen. Scott. In 1859-'60 he traveled inEurope.

He was

appointedcaptain in the CthU.S.cavalryiu 1861,

and

servedwith theregiment fromitsorganizati(nithroughthe peninsular

campaign

of 18i2,

commanding

it during theseven daysuntil Just before Stiuth Mountain,

when

he

was

appointed colonelof the 2d Ohio cavalry.

He

took ])art iu the captureof Mouticello, Ky.,

May

1,1863,and on .Tune

was

brevetted majorfor

commanding

in anactionnearthere.

He was

engaged inthe pursuitand captureof

Morgan,inJuly, 1833, preventing

him

fromcro.ssing the Ohio, and afterward servedaschief of cavalry oftin;

7,1804,he

was made

briga- dier-general of voluuteer.sand assignedtothe

command

of thecavalrydivision ofthe

army

oftheJames.

He

entered Petersburgwithhis small cavalry

command

on

Juno

9, 1861, for

which

attack he

brevetted lieutenant- colonel,and heled theadvanceoftheWilson raid,

which

cut theroads leading into

Richmond

fromthe south, for

more

thanfortydays.

On

Oct.28,186-t,he

was

brevetted major-generalof volunteers,andin M.ir>di, 1865,

was

assiguedto the commanilof a division of colored troops, whicli he

marched

into Kiidimoml on April

3.

He was

brevetted colonel in the regular service for gallant and meritorious service in action on the

Uarbytown

road, Virginia, October 7, 1804. Also brigadier and major general for gallantand meritoriousservices in the fieldduring thewar.Mar. 13, 18C5. G-en.

Kautz was
