Valentine Kautz, soldier, born in Ispringeu,Badeu, Geruiauy,Jan.T),1828. His parents emigratedtotliiscountryin 1828,and .settled inBrowu
County, Ohio,in 1832.The
sou servedasaprivate in the l.st regimentof Ohio volunteersintheMexican
war,and onhis dischargewas
appointedto tlusUnited States MilitaryAcademy, where
hewas graduatedin 1852and assignedtotheltli infantry.He
served inOregon and "Washington Territorytill the civil war, and in theKogue
Itiverwars of 1853-'55,and was wounded
inthelatter,andiu the Indianwar
onPaget Sound

alsowounded. In 1855hewas
promoted1stlieutenant,andiu1857commended
for gallantryby
Gen. Scott. In 1859-'60 he traveled inEurope.He was
appointedcaptain in the CthU.S.cavalryiu 1861,and

of 18i2,commanding
it during theseven daysuntil Just before Stiuth Mountain,when

appointed colonelof the 2d Ohio cavalry.He

entered Petersburgwithhis small cavalrycommand

9, 1861, forwhich
attack hewas
brevetted lieutenant- colonel,and heled theadvanceoftheWilson raid,which
cut theroads leading intoRichmond
fromthe south, formore
thanfortydays.On
Oct.28,186-t,he
was
brevetted major-generalof volunteers,andin M.ir>di, 1865,was
assiguedto the commanilof a division of colored troops, whicli hemarched
into Kiidimoml on April3.
He was
brevetted colonel in the regular service for gallant and meritorious service in action on theUarbytown
road, Virginia, October 7, 1804. Also brigadier and major general for gallantand meritoriousservices in the fieldduring thewar.Mar. 13, 18C5. G-en.Kautz was
apiwiutedlieutenant-colonel of the 34th infantryiu 1800,transferredt.ithe15tliin 1869,and couimindedtheregimentontheXew Mexican
frontiertill1874.He
orgauizedseveral successful expeditiom againsttlie Mescalero*Apaches,
who
hul tiedfromtli.drreservationin 1864,and in1870-71 succeedediuestablishing the tribeontheir reservation,where they have since remained. In June, 1874, hewas
pro-moted
colonelofthe 8th infantry,and iu 1875was
placed incomuiau<l ofthedepartmentof Arizona.He
servedinCalifoi-niafrom1878till 1886, and isnow
