op- portunism has helped Dennis get agood
start in hisbudding
farming career.He now
has over $57,000 in- 36vestedin machinery,buildings,equip-
ment and
supplies, plus investments inlivestockand
crops-on-hand.Butas hehimself admits, there areno
secrets behind hissuccessfulstart infarming."We
don'tdo
anything fancy or special," he notes,and
pauses before adding:"Iprobablyhad
opportunities that others haven't had. ButeverythingI had I reinvested in the operation. If there's

goal, after a shot at the
American Farmer
Degreeand
StarFarmer
of America, isa successful start in pro- duction agriculture.The Moore
farm consists of 1300 acres ofboth rentedand owned
land.Major
crops include cornand
soy- beans double-cropped with wheat.Danny
began hisSOE program
five yearsago
with afewfeeder hogs,two
calves, three
and
a halfacres ofcornand
1 1 acres ofsoybeans.Now
inpart- nership with his father, he raises 800 hogs, 50 head ofcattle and splits the1300-acre croppingduties.
Although
theMoore
operation is fairlytraditional,progressivethinking has playedamajor
role initssuccess.Six years
ago Danny began
experi-menting
with no-till plantingand
double-croppingsoybeans with wheat.His father
began
bothpracticesseveral years ago,and
both arenow
incorpo- rated into the farm. SaysDanny:
"I think double-croppingand
no-till isthe
wave
of the future, not onlyhere but everywhere."Another
part ofhissuccess isDan-
ny's willingness totakerisks pursuing better,
more
efficientways
to farm.He's noted first-hand the effects of double-cropped soybeans
and wheat
versus conventional soybean produc- tion.He
sayshisresultsshow
a higher yield for conventionalsoybean plant- ing,butseveraladvantagestodouble- cropping as well: theadded wheat
crop,most
obviously."Italsosaves time,fuel
and
laborto no-till plant soybeanson wheat
stub- ble,"he says. "In a bigoperation like this,timebecomes
criticalwhen
you're tryingtoget thewheat
cropharvested."Also,withno-tillagereplacingcon- ventional tillage, you're saving soil,"
he adds.
Danny's no
stranger to soilconservation
—
it's been the topic ofFFA
speeches he's given at contests,and
a personal concern as well. "It takes so longto replace soiLonce it'sgone,"hemuses,"and thecostscan be devestating."
An
experimentDanny
conductedcompared
solid-seededdrilledsoybeans to conventional-row soybeans. His resultsshowed
solid seeded drilled beans higher in yield per acre, butweed
controlwas
a problem.Danny
sayshis biggest challengeas abeginningfarmerisobtaining afford- ablecredit.As
withmost
farmersthese days, bothyoung and
old, he's inter- estedin stayingin business."I'm confident
my management
decisions will
make
it," he says. "I'm concerned—
but not worried."One way
he'sbeenabletocutriskisthroughwisemarketingstrategy.
"Dad
taught
me
alotabout marketing,espec- ially futuresand
hedging," he notes.Danny
checksfuturesprices routinely,and
contracts wellahead
of harvest time to insure a decent price for his crop."Yields are important, but being able to sell
and market
your crop can be evenmore
important, especiallywhen
you're startingout," he says.His
words exude
confidence, butDanny
says its alldue
to his vo-ag trainingand
past experiencegrowing up on
the farm.As

clothes. After a quick breakfast, hehops
in hispickupand
heads for thebank —
not toborrow money,
butto loan it.Farming
isonlyasidelinefor Dave.He'sbeenthe
farm
representativeand
ag loan officer forFarmers
Trust&
Savings
Bank
in Spencer, Iowa, since 1979. It's agrowing bank
that prides itselfon
friendly,professionalservice,and
at least once aweek
all officerswear
the blue blazerthat's part of the officialbank
uniform to work.It'snot thefirstbluejacket
Dave
has worn.He was
often seen in hisFFA
jacket throughout four years at Greenville Rossie
High
School innorthwest Iowa,
where
he served as chapter secretaryand was named Chapter
Farmer.He
later attendedIowa
State Universityand
earned a degree in agricultural education.After a stintintheNavy,it
was
time foranotherbluejacket,thistimeasthe vo-agteacherand FFA
advisorat his formerhigh school,now
consolidated intoClay Central Community
Schools.
He was
just completing his fourth year therewhen
theagbanking
opportunitycame
along."When
I interviewed for the job, Isaid,

don'tknow
anything about banking,' "Dave
recalls."They
said,'We
can teachyou what you
need toknow
about banking.We want
your agricultural background.'"It
was
a challenge he couldn't pass up, so hisFFA
chapter wishedhim
well withagoldwatch and
thetitle ofHonorary Chapter
Farmer,and
senthim
off to thebank
the next fall to"learn by doing."
After
some
intense on-the-job trainingand banking
seminars,itwas

startedasan agloanofficerand
isnow farm
representative, co- trust officer (working withtrusts that involve farmland)and
assistant vice president. But hismain
responsibilityis still
working
withfarm
customers, both in thebank and on
the farm.Farm
visitsarean importantpart of Dave'sjob.They
givehim
thechance to viewfarmers' operationsfirsthand.He
tries to visit all his customers—
both those
who
are having problemsand
those withsmooth-running
oper- ations. After eachfarm
call, he pre- pares a write-up ofwhat
hesaw and
didand
putsitinthecustomer'scredit file for future reference."I

visits amonth," Dave
says. "I'dliketobeable todo
tenamonth, which would

my farm
customers oncea year."When
he's in the bank, there's a steadyflowofcustomersinand
outof his office."A

istaking care of loan requestsand
loan payments,and

ideas a farmer mightwant
to runby me, especiallyifI'm goingto loan
him money," Dave
says.
He
can loan a farmerup
to$50,000 without furtherapproval; ifa farmer needs
more
than that,Dave
discusses his request with the loan review committee.
The
hardest part of Dave's job iswhen
hehastoturn afarmerdown.
"Itwas
quitedifficultthe firsttimetosay 'no'and
it's still kind of hard," he admits, "but itgets easier."Bankersareexpectedtobeactivein their
community, and Dave
isno
exception. He's amember
of thecattlemen and pork producer
associations, activein Kiwanis
and on
the agcommittee
of the SpencerChamber
ofCommerce. And
along with the other ag bankers in the county, he takes his turn clerking the livestock sales at the fair.No
matterwhat
he's doing,Dave
enjoys people
—
a trait he considersessential for ag bankers.
He
believes FFA'ers considering a career in agbanking
"have to enjoy talking to peopleand
be able to listen,and
be ready togivesome
adviceand
beready to say 'no,' if they're going to bemaking
loans. But mostlytheyhaveto beable to get alongwith people."Roger

has these qualities, Bruene sees a lot of opportunities in ag banking."As
the farmerbecomes
very sophisticated, financial decisionsbecome
very heavy,"heexplains."A bank
needsan individualwho
really understands ag technologyand
thedecisions thatneed to bemade."
Many
collegemajorsarecompatible with an ag lendingcareer, such as ag business, animal science or ag education.Banks would
also like prospective ag bankers to havesome knowledge
of accountingand
other business areas, but Bruene has found that"some
of thebanks
really preferAbove,

Nielsen, another
FFA
alumni.strong strengths in a technical
area-
like dairy science, ifthe
bank
is in a dairyarea.They want
theindividualtoknow
the kinds ofquestions to ask a farmer."Students can start to develop these strong skills in
FFA and
join abank
immediately after college, or likeDave, they can
work
in another ag careerand
strengthen theirskillsevenmore
before entering banking.Starting
salariesdepend on
education,experience
and
geographic area— Iowa
Statestudents enteringagbanking
with a bachelor's degree in 1981 averaged $14,000 to $16,000 a year.Added
