Connection"when he was
alittleboy.He would
sitcuddled
withhismom and
ask hertoplaythesong
overand
overagain. Jessefound
comfortlisteningtothelyricsand
believedthatsomeday he would
find"therainbow
connection."Jesse'sparentsdivorced
when he was
veryyoung and he
livedalonewithhismother.He
caredfor hisfathera great dealand wished
theycouldhave
a"normal
family." Jessedreamt
oftheday when
theconfines ofpovertyand
embarrass-ment would no
longerbe
his. Aftermoving
inand
outof seven schooldistricts,seeinghismother endure an
abusive relationship,witnessingbillcollectorsrepossesstheirbelong- ingsand watching
hislovingmother
fightatough
battlewithalcohol, Jesselostthe positive attitude
and dreams he
once had.Jesselost
hope
thatthefuturewould
bring something, any- thingbetter.As
theworld seemed
tospinoutofcontrol,Jessebecame
furtherdisenchanted
and
depressed. Despitetheirtryingtimesone
thingneverchanged —
thehope
of hismother.She
toldhim
thatno
matterhow bad
thingsgot,never giveup.She promised him
thatthingswould
getbetter!Inordertofulfillherpromise,his
mother
askedforherson's trustonce
again.She
decidedtomove
faraway from
their troubledlivesand
startanew.
This,too,was
hardforJesse ashe
leftbehind what
littlestabilityhe
had.The move, however tough
forthem
both,proved
positive.Jesse's
hope was once
againrekindled. Hismother won
her battlewithalcoholand
resolvednevertodrinkagain.They
renteda nicehome, and
hisrelationshipwithhisfatherand
stepmother grew. Intheirnew-found home,
Jesseagainhad
troublefittingin.He
stilldid notknow what
thefuturewould
bring,but
he approached
itwitha betterattitude.By
chance,Jesse enrolledinan
agricultureclass.Never
before,outsideof his family,
had he
experiencedsuchasense ofbelonging. Hisagricultureteacher treatedhim
withrespect.Jesse'steacher
became
hismentor and
hisfriend!The
teacher tookhim
tothe nationalFFA
conventionduringhisfirstyearinFFA.
Jesse couldn't believeallhe saw and
felt. Just ashismom
had
promised,lifegotbetter.Over
the years,withthesupportofmany
people, Jessegave FFA
hisalland FFA gave
itsalltohim.The
lasttimeJesse visitedthenationalconvention,hissagaofgrowth and hope
continued.As he
waited withgreatprideand
anticipationfor a specialmoment
to arrive,he
reflectedon
aquotationfrom Helen
Kellerwho
said,"Somuch
hasbeen
giventome;
Ihave no
timetoponder
overthatwhich
hasbeen
denied." After thatmoment, and
followinga lifetime of adversity,Jesse'sname was announced
as anew
nationalFFA
officer.No,
notsimply asJesse,butasLiamJesseBrody.You
see,Iknow
thatlifeisnot easy,I'vebeen
there. Despitelife'shardships,Irefusetogive up.There have been
timesinmy
lifewhen
IthoughtIcouldn'tgo any

remember back
toan
earlierpointinthe year;itwas
a beautifulday
inFebruary. Ihad
theopportunityto visita schooland
talkwithaclass.However,
thiswas no
ordinaryvisit. ThistimeI
found
myselfintheJapanese countryside, talkingtoan
EnglishclassofJapanesestudents.The
teacher invitedme
toshareaspects of cultureand
societywiththe studentsforaboutan
hour.Because
thestudentsknew
very basicEnglish,theteacherdidquite abitoftranslating.As
thestudentsasked
questions,theteacherwrote some
of thewords
inEnglishon
theboard.He wrote words such
as:"slam dunk," "agriculture,""pizza"
and
"blondehair."When
theconversation
became more
complex,he began
towrite thewords
"violence," "guns," "trade"and
"hatred"on
thechalk board.While we
talkedabouthow
thingswere
inAmerica,I toldthem
thatmany
ofthosewords
didn'thave
tobethere.Then
Icircledsome
of thewords.With one
passof thechalkImade
astatementthatcouldbe understood
inany
language. Idrew
diagonalslashesthrough
thecircleand
thewords, and

them
itwas up

ofone
ofAesop'sFables.The
taleistoldof a familywitha fatherand
three boys.The boys were always
arguing.No
matterwhat
the father saiditwould
not sinkinto theboys'heads.The
fatherwanted
toprovidethem
withan example
sothattheymight
seehow
theiractionswould
eventually leadthem
tomisfortune.So he
askedone
oftheboys
tobringhim
abundle
ofsticks.The
father told hisboys
to attempttobreakthebundle
ofsticks. Allthreeboys
tried tosnap
the entirebundle,butnone found
success.The
father then untiedthebundle and
toldthesonstobreakthesticksone by
one.The
threeboys now found
successwithease.The
father saidtohissons, "If
