InitiativeProgram being implemented
atEastMagnet High School
inKansas
City,Mo.,
isthefirstofitskind.The program
targetinginner- city,at-riskstudentswilllaythefoundation and
serve as amodel
forfutureagriculturaleducation programs
inmajor metropolitan
cities.The program
isdesigned
todevelop
careerinterests,enhance academic and
educationalachievement, develop
leadershipskillsand prepare
at-riskstudentsforemploy- ment
in real jobs.The mission
of theprogram
istoproduce
studentswho can
getand
sustainhigh-skill,high-wage
jobsby providing them with
thecompetencies
requiredfor entryintotheagribusinessindustrywith
aspecificfocuson
the horticulture careerfield.A unique
featureof theprogram
isthatitisbeing
deliveredviasixteacherswho
willwork
collaboratively to achieve the goals of theprogram. The
six-teacherteam
includesfour coreacademic
teachersrepresentingmath-
ematics, English,socialstudiesand
science,who
willaddress
basicskillsneeded
ofstudentswhich
arerequired foralifetimeoflearning.The
horticultureteacherwillprovide
instructionand
experientialactivitiesforthe industryskillsspecificallydemanded by
thehorticultural field.The
filialmember
of theinstructionalteam
isthe employabilitytrainingteacherwho
willimplement
theWAVE (Work, Achievement,
Values,Education)
curricu-lum. The WAVE curriculum
isadropout prevention and recovery program designed
toenhance academic and
employabilityskills,enabling
studentstomake
aseamless
transitionfrom
schooltowork.
The
AgriculturalEducation
InitiativeProgram
isa year-round
educationalventure with
students participatingin activitiesranging from PALS
tointernshipsand
jobplacement during
thesummer months.
The major
goals of the three-yearinitiativearetoimprove academic achievement, improve attendance and
punctuality,produce
studentswho
possessemployment
skillsthatarealigned
with
theneeds
of business,to raise students'self-imageand
toincreasethegraduate
rateof at-riskstudentsinvolved
