Program being implemented

Magnet High School

Kansas

City,

Mo.,

isthefirstofitskind.

The program

targetinginner- city,at-riskstudentswilllaythe

foundation and

serve as a

model

forfutureagricultural

education programs

in

major metropolitan

cities.

The program

is

designed

to

develop

careerinterests,

enhance academic and

educational

achievement, develop

leadershipskills

and prepare

at-riskstudentsfor

employ- ment

in real jobs.

The mission

of the

program

isto

produce

students

who can

get

and

sustainhigh-skill,

high-wage

jobs

by providing them with

the

competencies

requiredfor entryintotheagribusinessindustry

with

aspecificfocus

on

the horticulture careerfield.

A unique

featureof the

program

isthatitis

being

deliveredviasixteachers

who

will

work

collaboratively to achieve the goals of the

program. The

six-teacher

team

includesfour core

academic

teachersrepresenting

math-

ematics, English,socialstudies

and

science,

who

will

address

basicskills

needed

ofstudents

which

arerequired foralifetimeoflearning.

The

horticultureteacherwill

provide

instruction

and

experientialactivitiesforthe industryskillsspecifically

demanded by

thehorticultural field.

The

filial

member

of theinstructional

team

isthe employabilitytrainingteacher

who

will

implement

the

WAVE (Work, Achievement,

Values,

Education)

curricu-

lum. The WAVE curriculum

isa

dropout prevention and recovery program designed

to

enhance academic and

employabilityskills,

enabling

studentsto

make

a

seamless

transition

from

schoolto

work.

The

Agricultural

Education

Initiative

Program

isa year-

round

educational

venture with

students participatingin activities

ranging from PALS

tointernships

and

job

placement during

the

summer months.

The major

goals of the three-yearinitiativeareto

improve academic achievement, improve attendance and

punctuality,

produce

students

who

possess

employment

skillsthatarealigned

with

the

needs

of business,to raise students'self-image

and

toincreasethe

graduate

rateof at-riskstudents

involved

inthe

program. The program

will targetstudents

beginning

at

grade

10

and

continuing

through grade

12.

of Kansas City as Trustee,

have

underwritten the FFA's

Urban

Agriculture

Education

Initiative

because we

feel the FFA organization'suniquesetofskillscould

be extended

toaddress the challenges impacting vocational choices available to America's

urban

youth.Thisjointproject

between

theFFA

and

ourlocal

urban

youthdistrict is

a

bold experiment,

which we hope

will yield long-term success here

and be

replicated in

many

othercommunities.
