Winning With Records;

These record keeping tips can help you earn state and

national FFA awards and degrees.

WHY

Keep Records?

From

GreenhandstoAmericanFarmers,it'sagoodbet thatevery

FFA member

has,atonepoint,thrownuphishands andpleadedtothegodsforan answerto that question.

Buttheanswer,says

Bob

Seefeldt,

FFA

programspecialist at theNational

FFA

Center, issimple.

You

needrecord keeping

skills.

We

alldo.

Sayforexample,you wanttotryforthe StateFarmerdegree.

You

figureyour

SOB

programis largeenough, you've earned enough money, you've worked hard. Butifyouhaven't kept good, accuraterecordsthroughoutyouryearsof

FFA

projects, chances of earningthedegreeareslim.

The

realityofwinning

FFA

awardsandhigherdegrees,is:

producethe biggeststeeror

grow

200-bushel/acrecorn,but if

youdon'thavetherecordstoback yourachievements,forgetit.

You

need inventories, efficiency factors, income and expense summaries

allthose recordsthat verify thescopeanddetailof your

SOE

program.

Mr. Seefeldt,

who

recently directed a full revamp of the American Farmer degree application and proficiency award applications, says thereis

more

to

good

recordkeeping thanjust winning awards.

"These record keeping skills you learn today are skills

everyoneusesthroughoutlife."hesays."Thisisyourchanceto practice."

Indeed, you

may

already have found good use for record keepingskillsoutsideyour agclassroom.

Records are also necessary for analyzing your farm or agribusiness.

A

recent issue ofAgriculturalEducation states,

"records areessential inshortandlong-termplanning...Aftera planhasbeen implemented, records arenecessarytodetermine the actual outcome andprovide abasisformakingdecisions."

Those needs

may

be far in the future. But ifyou plan to compete foran

FFA

award sometimewithinthenexttwoor three years,here are

some

points to

remember

thatwill

make

fillingouttheapplicationeasier.Mr.Seefeldtsays there arefive areasofanawardapplicationjudgeslookatwith acriticaleye:

1.

How

Accurate? Judges look at

how

reasonable the informationisinthe application, saysMr.Seefeldt. "Ifa student says he has 1,000 head of beef, yet does not

show how

he obtained those animals or

how

the project started, that applicationissuspect.'

One common

problem Mr.Seefeldt findsis"unrealistic" size of

SOE

programs.

"A

student

who

saysheisfarming 180acres, raising200 headofcattle,80feeder pigsandattendingcollegeat the

same

timeishavingillusions,"hesays."Claiming 33percent shareof familymachineryforhelpingto repairit,then valuingit at$18,000isalsounrealistic,

compared

to the

wage

onewould normallyreceiveforrepairingmachinery."

2.Scope.Scopeisa record keepingstatisticwhichdescribes

how

an

SOE

program growsfro^lbeginningto currentstatus.

"Growth

canbe recorded a

number

of ways,"heexplains,"such asexpandingnumbersof cows,addingdifferent enterprises,or

more

responsibility.

"Rate ofgrowth is

more

important injudgingapplications thanhaving alargeprojectwithlittlegrowth," headds.

3.Appearanceofapplication.

"A

judge won't takepoints off forasloppyapplication, but aneatonedoes

make

agoodfirst

impression,"saysMr.Seefeldt.

He

urges

FFA members

totype applications which are submitted, and include photos with captioninformation.

4.Yearlyinventoriesmustmatch. Thismeansthattheending inventoryon

December

31, 1984, must beexactly thesameas the beginning inventory on January I, 1985. This principle appliestoallkinds ofinventories."Itseemsso simple, butyou'd besurprised

how many

students

make

thismistake," says Mr.

Seefeldt.

5. Net worth.

"An

increase in net worth cannot be greater than total net worth," he says. "For all practical purposes it

should beless,because astudentwillneedtospend

money

ina project.

"Many

American Farmerapplicants nevergettheirdegree just because ofthisproblem," hesays.

Winning
