Associate Degree Program
The Associate Degree program is two years in length. The graduate occupational therapy as- sistant is a technically qualified member of the health team who functions under the supervi- sion or consultation of a certified/registered occupational therapist. The assistant accepts clini- cal responsibilities in hospitals, nursing homes, day care centers, rehabilitation centers, or those organizations directed to maintain health and socialization of its members.
Upon completion of the Associate Degree program in Occupational Therapy Technology, the graduate will be qualified to:
1. Meet all requirements for employment as an occupational therapy assistant at an entry em- ployment level.
2. Function with technical proficiency in occupational therapy techniques including: fabrica- tion of splints, activities of daily living, adaptive equipment, craft modalities, and group activities.
3. Function in the analysis of occupational performance and the components of performance of patients/clients as related to the occupational therapy process with emphasis on teaching and occupational interviewing.
4. Function in a variety of environmental settings in a program emphasizing occupational per- formance for any given age group.
Graduates of the associate degree program are eligible for the certification examination leading to admission to the Registry of Occupational Therapy Assistants maintained by the American Occupational Therapy association. This examination is held throughout the country in January and June of each year.
The associate degree program in Occupational Therapy Technology is approved by the Accred- itation Committee of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
Admission Requirements The quality of prior academic performance and a personal inter- view are considered in candidate selection. Applications must be submitted by April 1 of the year of anticipated entry to the program.
Awards The program will recommend students with superior academic performance for de- grees awarded with distinction. The Erna Simek Outstanding Student Award is presented an- nually to a second-year student who has been selected by peers and faculty as having demon- strated outstanding performance.
Curriculum All courses must be taken in sequence as published. Specific grade-point policies for continuation in the program are distributed to students with the letter of acceptance. The code (G) indicates courses which meet the Division's General Education Requirements.
