CHAPTER III RESEARCH FINDING

B. Data Analysis

In this analysis the researcher describes the translation of standard metaphor that occurs in the novel The Maze Runner. In translating this type, Newmark in his book Approaches to Translation has seven procedures for translating the standard metaphor. The following are the translating procedures of standard metaphor:

1. Reproducing the same image the target language

ST: The creature disappeared from sight, a shadow swallowed by more shadow.

TT: Makhluk itu lenyap dari penglihatan, hingga bayangannya ditelan kegelapan.

The procedure of translation used is reproducing the same image in the target language. The underline sentence a shadow swallowed by more shadow was translated literally into hingga bayangannya ditelan kegelapan. The translator translated the source text same image as in the target text. Usually, the swallow word indicates to swallow food into mouth, swallowed up here shows a shadow swallowed by more shadow.

ST: Waving her arms wildly, screaming something drowned out by the sounds of the storm.

TT: Melambai-lambaikan kedua tangannya dengan liar, meneriakkan sesuatu yang lenyap ditelan bunyi badai.

25

The procedure of translation used is reproducing the same image in the target language. The sentence waving her arms wildly, screaming something drowned out by the sounds of the storm was translated literally into melambai- lambaikan kedua tangannya dengan liar, meneriakkan sesuatu yang lenyap ditelan bunyi badai. Because this sentence was translated same image from source text to in the target text. Usually wild indicates to the wild animals, wild this sentence for waving his hand around here and there.

2. Replacing the image in the SL with a standard TL image.

ST: Words slowly fell from chuck,

TT: Kata demi kata meluncur perlahan dari mulut chuck,

The procedure of translation used is replacing the image in the SL with a standard TL image. The sentence was words slowly fell from chuck translated into kata demi kata meluncur perlahan dari mulut chuck. Because words slowly fell from chuck. The translator does not translate it literally, because if it was translated literally, the reader can not get the message of source text in target text.

Although the source text words slowly fell from chuck is translated to kata demi kata meluncur perlahan dari mulut chuck. The message can be transferred to reader. Meluncur to indicate that the word for word out of the mouth of chuck, usually meluncur shown to a game of swings.

26

ST: A few snickers escaped the crowd, and Gally looked around, his face bright red.

TT: Segelincir tawa terdengar dari kerumunan, dan Gally melempar pandangan ke sekelilingnya dengan wajah memerah.

The procedure of translation used is replacing the image in the SL with a standard TL image. The underline sentence a few snickers escaped the crowd. It can see that a few snickers escaped the crowd become segelincir tawa terdengar dari kerumunan. In the sentence was not translated literally because the reader would not get real meaning of metaphor. Target text become clear.

Segelincir indicates to the sound of laughter was heard from the crowd, usually segelincir shown for objects.

ST: Black water washed down the windows outside. The rain drummed on the roof, heavy; thunder shook the skies above them.

TT: Air gelap mengguyur jendela dari luar. Hujan memukul-mukul atap bus, sangat deras. Guntur mengguncang langit di atas mereka.

The procedure of translation used is replacing the image in the SL with a standard TL image. The underline sentence The rain drummed on the roof was translated literally into Hujan memukul-mukul atap bus. The translator reflected the word drummed on to memukul-mukul as the explanation from the source text in order to get the understanding of the reader. The drummed on indicates heavy rain falling and fall until it touches the roof of the bus. Usually memukul-mukul shown to objects like hit the door, etc.

27

ST: But its body kept churning, trying to squeeze its way inside.

TT: Namun, tubuhnya tetap berputar, mencoba menggeliat masuk.

The procedure of translation used is replacing the image in the SL with a standard TL image. The underline sentence trying to squeeze its way inside was translated into mencoba menggeliat masuk. It can see that to squeeze become menggeliat . In the sentence was not translated literally because if it translated to memeras the reader would not get real meaning of metaphor. Therefore, the translator translated the word squeeze to menggeliat. Target text become clear.

Menggeliat showed the body that tries to enter into the maze like a snake.

3. Translation of metaphor by simile.

ST: Harsh sounds of chains and pulleys, like the workings of an ancient steel factory, echoed through the room, bouncing off the walls with a hollow, tinny whine.

TT: Suara rantai dan kontrol bergemerencing keras, seolah sebuah pabrik baja kuno sedang bekerja, bergema di dalam ruangan, membentur- bentur dinding terowongan dengan bunyi berderit yang menggema.

The procedure of translation used is translation of metaphor by simile, retaining the image. The sentence Harsh sounds of chains and pulleys, like the workings of an ancient steel factory, echoed through the room, bouncing off the walls with a hollow, tinny whine was translated literally into suara rantai dan kontrol bergemerencing keras, seolah sebuah pabrik baja kuno sedang bekerja, bergema di dalam ruangan, membentur-bentur dinding terowongan dengan bunyi berderit yang menggema. Because harsh sounds of chains and pulleys directly image like the workings of an ancient steel factory, echoed through the room,

28

bouncing off the walls with a hollow, tinny whine. Bergemerencing show sound for chain, usually bergemerencing was shown to a sound object.

ST: Goose bumps broke out all over him, a creepy fear trickling down his spine like a wet spider.

TT: Bulu kudunya meremang, kengerian merambati punggungnya seperti seekor laba-laba.

The procedure of translation used is translation of metaphor by simile, retaining the image. The sentence was Goose bumps broke out all over him, a creepy fear trickling down his spine like a wet spider translated literally bulu kudunya meremang, kengerian merambati punggungnya seperti seekor laba-laba.

Because Goose bumps broke out all over him, a creepy fear trickling down his spine is reflected image like a wet spider. Merambati shows the horror that went through to the back. Usually, creeping shown to root out of a tree.

4. Translation of metaphor or simile by simile plus sense.

ST: Despair hung in the air like the smoke from the map room,

TT: Keputusannya menggantung di udara seperti asap yang membumbung dari ruang peta,

The procedure of translation used is translation of metaphor by simile by simile plus sense. The underline sentence Despair hung in the air like the smoke from the map room was translated literally into Keputusannya menggantung di udara seperti asap yang membumbung dari ruang peta.

Because Despair hung in the air is reflected image like the smoke from the map room. Usually, hung shows objects such as hanging clothes, hung here show the

29

decision to come.

5. Conversion of metaphor to sense

ST: Strangely enough, he felt his fear whisked away like a swarm of gnats caught in the wind, replaced by an intense curiosity.

TT: Anehnya, rasa takutnya seolah lenyap dalam sekejap seperti sekumpulan serangga yang tersapu angin, berganti rasa penasaran yang tinggi.

The procedure of translation used is conversion of metaphor to sense.

The underline sentence he felt his fear whisked away like a swarm of gnats caught in the wind was translated rasa takutnya seolah lenyap dalam sekejap seperti sekumpulan serangga yang tersapu angin. To make the reader get the message of the source text, so the target text was translated into rasa takutnya seolah lenyap dalam sekejap seperti sekumpulan serangga yang tersapu angin. Tersapu angin shown to fear missing like insect in the wind, usually swept shown to dust.

6. Deletion

ST: My finger are bloody burning like a mother.

TT: Jari-jariku sudah seperti terbakar.

The procedure of translation used is deletion. The sentence My finger are bloody burning like a mother.Although the word like a mother is omitted, it is does not affect message of source text in the target text. The translator does not translate the word like a mother in target text because deleting the word like a mother in target text does not affect significantly in getting the message of ST.

30

7. Same metaphor combined with sense

ST: He pictured snow on trees, running down a leaf-strewn road, eating a hamburger, the moon casting a pale glow on a grassy meadow, swimming in a lake,

TT: Dia dapat membayangkan salju di pucuk pepohonan, berlari di atas jalan yang bertaburan daun gugur, menyantap hamburger, sinar bulan yang berkilau pucat di atas padang rumput, berenang di danau,
