3. The kinds of error in pronouncing English Diphthong and Triphthong sounds
There are three of the errors which the students produced; they are:
a. Substitution
In producing English Diphthong and Triphthong sounds most of the students did substitution. For example /eɪ/ and /eɪə/, the students substituted with /aɪ/ and /aɪə/. When the students pronounced Failed and Layer, most of the students replaced /eɪ/ with Diphthong /aɪ/, /eɪə/ with Diphthong /aɪə/,
b. Omission
In producing English Diphthong and Triphthong sounds most of the students did omission. For example /aɪ/ and /aɪə/, the students omission with /ɪ/ and /aɪ/. When the students pronounced Vice and Tired, most of the students replaced /aɪ/ with Diphthong /ɪ/, /aɪə/
with Diphthong /aɪ/, c. Misformation
In producing English Diphthong and Triphthong sounds most of the students did misformation. For example /əu/ and /
ɔɪ
ə/, the students omission with /o/ and /oy/. When the students pronounced open and Loyal, most of the students replaced /əu/ with Diphthong /o/, /ɔɪ
ə/with Diphthong /oy/.
It is relevant with the theory of error analysis from Ellis (1997:18) who said that error analysis can be classified into five forms, they are:
omission, insertion, substitution, misformation and misordering.
CHAPTER V
