CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD RESEARCH METHOD
B. Discussion
The implementation of 21st century skills plays an important role in supporting students to achieve success in learning, it was also conveyed by Astuti (2019) that the four characters of 21st century learning namely critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration must be owned by students because education in the 21st century has a different direction compared to the previous century. Education in the 21st century is expected to produce results for students who are ready to enter the industrial revolution 4.0.
The steps taken by the government to implement this 4Cs in the learning process are indeed very appropriate, Tuzlokova, et al (2018) in their research on 21st century skills especially critical thinking skills is very important to be applied in the learning process, this can be seen in the majority of respondents (93.4%) agree that 21st century skills or critical thinking should be considered in teaching English and that it benefits students (93.2%), and communication is also recognized as a basic social skill by the P21 framework for the 21st Learning program by thousands of teachers and hundreds of school teachers in the US and many other countries, (Raptou E, et al 2017) in addition collaboration has also become a trend of the 21st century and in the 21st century there has also been a shift from individuals to group work and from independence to society, collaboration also makes participants students at various levels of performance work together in small groups towards shared goals (Laal, M et al 2012) and Piirto (2011) also state that currently, there are skills or expertise needed in the 21st century, and those skills include creativity skills and are justified to include them in the school curriculum, creativity is interrelated with other 21st century
skills, namely solving problems often require creative ideas; communicating and working creatively play an important role in successful social life; and the creative use of information and digital technology is also important in navigating everyday life in the 21st century.
The result from this study was also in line with Landon (2019) who conduct her research about students perception on the 21stcentury Learning and Innovation Skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity (4Cs). The results of this study indicate that students hadpositive perceptions regarding the 4Cs. The majority ofparticipants agreed that each of the 4Cs is an important 21st- century skill. The results in percentages were communication(94.2%), collaboration(84.9%), critical thinking(79.9%), and creativity(89.3%). %). The same results also revealed by Chanes, D (2018) in his research revealed that students showed more motivation in the classroom because of the implementation of 21st century learning practices. Students feel that they are part of their learning, they are responsible for their learning, collaboration among their peers, and face new challenges, besides the classrooms are becoming more centered by students which allows students to take a greater role in their education. The results also showed that students became more aware of their learning and progress during this implementation.
Research on the importance of the implementation of the 21st century skills is also highlighted by Hamid et al (2017) in their research said that the implementation of 21st century skills is very important to be applied in class because students who were taught by means of 21stcentury skills significantly had
a better performance than the students who were taught by the traditional teacher- centered methods of teaching listening and speaking session. Therefore, it can beconcluded that 21st century skills play a facilitative role in listening and speaking.
FarhadyandMotallebzadeh (2014) also examined the effect of 21stcentury skills on reading comprehension. Their results have shown that 21stcentury skills have a positive effect on reading comprehension. Therefore, instead of listening and speaking, 21stcentury skills also have a significant effect on the reading comprehension. Apart from that the application of 21st or 4C skills also develops students' writing skills, this is evidenced by Yu (2019) in his research saying that the 4C elements of 21st century learning play an essential role in the learning process of students, the 4C elements improve students English writing skills, it can be seen by positive impact for students where students were trained to generate writing ideas through critical thinking and creative thinking and doing group activities enable students to master variety of content effectively also doing discussion with group member.
By looking at the results of the research the implementation of 21stcentury skills or 4C skills are very important because it can help students more easily master a variety of skills in English such as listening, speaking, writing and reading. In addition, the implementation of 21st century skills taught in the learning process has changed students lives, supported their future success and also increased their confidence, self-efficacy, and credibility, (Jacobson, L, 2016).
It can be concluded that this 21st century skill or 4C skill is important to apply and
also develop in the learning process, while this research is also expected to function as a stepping stone in expressing students' perception of 4C skills when educators prepare students for 21st century skills.
