B. Specific Data

1. The Way of Using Function-Altering Stimulus Approach in Teaching English at The Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Dolopo in Academic

Year 2015/2016

Function-altering stimulus approach can be implemented in teaching English in senior high school. This approach has positive effect in building students‟ good behavior. The process of teaching and learning

that use this approach will be easier. By using this approach, students and teacher can achieve their goals in learning and teaching.

The way of using function-altering stimulus approach in teaching English is applied by the English teacher in the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Dolopo. In this approach, the teacher gives students statements that will activate students‟ interest in learning English.

In teaching process, teacher needs lesson plan to guide him. Lesson plan is the map that will guide the teacher in teaching. It is also to know the goal and the objectives in learning and teaching. Lesson plan also include the method, strategy, and approach that will be used by the teacher. Based on interview with Mr. Arif Marsetyono, the English teacher of XI IPS 1 stated that:

“Lesson plan is needed. From lesson plan we know our goal in teaching. Lesson plan is used as reference; it is also to guide the teacher avoid teaching out of the target. Lesson plan can be imagined like people that will go to somewhere. They will decide the place that they will go and also the accommodation that they will used to get there. 83

Beside lesson plan, as a teacher, he must aware with the materials that he will transfer to his students. The interesting materials will increase students‟ interest in learning process. Teacher should choose good materials in teaching. Mr. Arif Marsetyono said that:

“Select interesting materials is used to stimulate students‟ interest in learning. In another word, the interest materials can make students understands about what they are speaking and discussing is related with the materials. The interest materials are used as stimulus. It is

functioned to stimulate students to think and focus with material that they learn. 84

This is confirmed by observation that researcher had done in March 28th 2016 at 9:45 am. Based on researcher observation, Mr. Arif explained about hortatory exposition text. When he explained the materials, he was selected the example of hortatory text from students‟

daily life. For details information, look at appendix observation. 85

In teaching, teacher also needs approach. Approach is used to make the teaching and learning process more enjoyable. Edward Anthony states that approach describes the nature of the subject matter to be taught.86 Mr. Arif Marsetyono said his opinion about approach in teaching as below:

“Approach is important. There is scientific approach and the other kinds of approach. However, we should be able to develop it. We must do something more innovative. Look for something new to make students does not bore in learning.87

Based on researcher first observation, Mr. Arif Marsetyono used specific approach in teaching English. The function of this approach to make students had attention about what the teacher explained. For detail information it can be look at the appendix observation.88

In teaching English, approach, method, strategy is important.

Teacher cannot separate them from component of teaching and learning.

As the explanation in review of literature, there is some component in teaching and learning. All of the component must complete each other.

In interview with Mr. Arif Marsetyono, he stated that:

“There are many kinds of approach, method, and strategy that can be used by teacher in teaching. Think pair and share is one example from kinds of method. However, every approach, strategy, and method has a positive and negative side. So, we can combine between them. It must be avoided in using too much same strategy, method, or approach in every teaching. It is caused we must adapting with the time. In addition, in choosing method, strategy, and approach must be adjusted with students‟ ability. 89

The use of approach in teaching English was proved from the first researcher observation in the XI IPS 1 class at SMA Negeri 1 Dolopo. In teaching, Mr Arif Marsetyono used apperception before he explained the new materials. The questions related with the last materials that he explained. Then, Mr. Arif Marsetyono continued to give students another questions to build students interest in learning the present materials. The questions that were used by Mr. Arif related with students daily life. For more information can be looked at appendix observation. 90

Teaching English in senior high school is different with teaching English for college students. In senior high school, teacher teaches English in general skills. In college, lecturer are divided into some categories, such as, the lecture of reading, the lecture of listening, and soon. However, the English teacher in senior high school also cares to teach four English skills as the description below:
