is a profitable use of land not suitable for cultivated crops.The members
of theHousatonic
ValleyChapter
inCon-
necticutfound
this out as farback
as 1941,when
theyplantedtheirfirsttrees.Today,
chaptermembers
plant over 1,000 trees each yearon
theunused
pasture of theHousatonic
ValleyRe-
gionalHigh
School property to replace the trees that are harvestedand
sold at their prosperous standon
U.S.Route
7 in Falls Village, Connecticut.The FFA
chapter obtainsWhite
spruceand Douglas
fir seedlingsfrom
the state of Connecticutand
plantsthem
throughout their 11-acre planta- tion, spottingthem
in areaswhere
treeshave been
harvested or culled.A
closespacing is used, about 4 foot
by 4
foot, withoutany
problems,due
to the con- stantremoval
ofmature
trees at Christ-mas
timeand
a mortality rate of25
per- cent for the seedlings.The
tree lots are maintained each springand
fallby
chaptermembers who
cut the brushand weeds
thathave become
established in planted areas..Also, since
White
pine (Pinus strobus)is native to the area, there are a lot of volunteer
White
pine seedlings that can quicklygrow
into trees.These
pine trees along withRed
cedar (Juniperus virginiana) are cut afterThanksgiving and
are used in the production of Christmas wreathsby
the chapter. All the cull spruceand Douglas
fir aremade
intodoor swags
or bundles of greens, so that nothing is wasted.The FFA
chapter does not fertilize the plantation or use chemicalweed

chapter's sales area includes acomplete warming

cankeep warm
during cold days.control.
Once
theyhad
to spray for Spruce Gall Aphid,and
fortunately thatproblem
never got out of hand.The
plantation will
produce
a si.\- to seven- foot treeunder
these conditions in seven to ten years.With
the desire toproduce
agood
quality tree, the chapter hasbegun
a pruningand
shearingprogram.
In the past only doubleleaderswere removed.
Now,
theFFA members
are pruning for shapeand
density.The White
spruce responds well to this type ofmanagement.
Insome
cases,however, a year'sgrowth might
belost;butthrough
careful pruning,many more
high qual- ity trees can be produced.The
chapter sells these trees to the publicon
acut-your-own
basis orfrom
the racks at the stand.The
stand hasbeen
developed over the years to pro- videparkingfor 10-15carsand
awarm
shelterfor the
FFA members who mind
the stand daily for the three
weeks
be- fore Christmas.FFA members
are trained inand
practice salesmanshipfrom
greeting the customers,showing
the products, filling out sales slipsand making change
all theway
to tying the trees onto cars.The
chapter usesUSDA
standards for Christmas trees to grade each tree that is sold.The
trees arepre-graded inNovember,
taggedand
priced.Only
tagged trees are soldand
the prices rangefrom $2
to $8depending on
sizeand
quality.No
treeunder
three feet is soldand
all the culls aremarked
for removal.The
chapter'swreath making
projectis equally as successful. First, in late

take or- ders for the wreaths within thecom-
munities of the sch.iol district. This consists of door-to-door sales in the six towns, an area of250
square miles innorthwestern Connecticut with a total population of 13,600.
No commercial
or garden club orders arc taken—
only individual orders because the chapterwants
thisto bea learningexperience as well as amoney making
venture.It takesover eighttruck loads ofpine
boughs and
four truck loads of cedar branchestomake
the wreaths.The
pineand
cedarboughs
are thenformed
intobunches and
wired with florist wire.Tierstake the
bunches and
wirethem on heavy
coat hangers.Next
the wreathis clipped with a scissors to
remove any
pine shoots that are too long orout of place.Finally, the wreath is decorated with three or four
White
pine cones(which were
collectedand
prewired early in the fall) to the wreath.A bow made
of plastic or velvet ribbon isadded and
additional colorand
textureisadded by
using branches ofMountain
Laurel and red floristberries.Since this project can create a
mess
of pineand
cedar branchesand
burningis forbidden in the stateofConnecticut, the chapter has resorted to the useof a chipper.
The
fine sawdust-like chips are available for useby members
tomulch
landscape projectsand
keep the treeand
shrub nurseryweed
free.The
profitsfrom
the treeand
wreath venture are used to maintain chapterequipment which
includes a truck, tractorand
rototiller. This project fi-nances the
development
of the sales stand, sends students to the national convention inKansas
Cityand
pays for the parent-studentbanquet
each year, as well asmany
