wanted to go about it in a

new

and innovativemanner.Insteadofjustlearn- ing about the steers, they planned to thoroughly research the beef industry and

become

familiarwithit.Three major objectives were developed to provide informationforthe researchproject.

The

students wanted to determine today's consumer preference regarding thepurchase ofretail beefin relationto the qualityand priceoftheproduct.

To do

this, they developed a survey

com-

posedofquestionsabouttheconsumer's

likesand dislikes concerningbeef. After conducting the survey at several local

food stores, the students compiled the informationandplanondisplayingtheir findings at

upcoming

beefshows.

Another objective was to investigate the nutritional value of beef products and

how

they relate to the

USDA- recommended

daily, allowances.

A

"Nutri-Facts" committee wasappointed todo necessary researchand

upon com-

pletion will develop a brochure con- taining theinformation. Also, ananalysis oftheLimousinsteersraisedwillalsobe

done

following the Junior Livestock

Show

in

May.

The

final objective was to evaluate majorbeefbreeds concerningconsumer preference in the areas of quality and

ratability.

Members

of the Beef Breed Research

Committee

havetaken on the task of comparing major beef breeds suchasHereford,

Angus

and Simmental.

Theirfindingswillalsobe includedinthe brochureand displays.

Hopefully, by being involved in this research project, students will have a betterunderstanding ofthemeattheyeat

and aninsight into thebeef industryas a whole.

Many

opportunitiesarepresented to students in a project such as this.

Some may

findjobs through their

new

contactswithbusinesspeopleand

maybe

even

become

interestedina careerdealing withthe beef industry.
