The students can't get enough of it. We get the chance to go into the water during our excursions. Chris adds that with that freedom comes responsibility. People get the impression that it's all fun and games, but there is work to be done and there is an objection to it. Tracy Percival, a junior who just earned her Empire State Farmer diploma, said Wright treats the course like a college class. My friends are amazed at the freedom we have in this class, but... What they didn't know when they started digging was that the high school, built in the late 1960s, was built on top of the old McKinley High. “We were collecting concrete and bricks; we even found a pair of work boots – that was a bit scary,” says Wright.

Until this year, Wright and his students made an annual pilgrimage to a long grid to catch smallmouth trout. The new equipment, Wright says, will boost their production and make for a more complete learning experience. From the first day freshmen walk into Aquatic Ecology until their graduation, these students learn and perform water quality testing procedures. Students graduating from the aquatic ecology program went on to study oceanography, chemical engineering and environmental law.

Many people think of groundwater as a series of lakes and rivers flowing beneath the earth's surface, and are surprised to learn that groundwater exists in saturated, permeable zones of rock, sand, or gravel called aquifers. But agricultural activities have also introduced pollutants that threaten the quality of groundwater, limiting its usefulness as a source of drinking water and for other purposes.

Groundwater Pollution In the past, much attention was paid to water pollution control programs focused on the protection of surface waters such as pollution of a river from a specific source. Groundwater quality was not much discussed because it was assumed that contaminants would be degraded or washed out of the water by the natural filtering action of the soil. With improvements noted in surface water quality and countries' programs to control point sources of pollution, the focus of water pollution control in the United States during the 1980s shifted to managing the most difficult concern—groundwater.

The most common found or suspected groundwater contaminants in the states tended to be agricultural sources: 38 reported nitrates (fertilizers), 24 reported bacteria (animal waste), and 32 reported pesticides (herbicides and insecticides). The most affected group is the rural population, which obtains drinking water from groundwater that is mostly untreated before consumption. But normally accepted large-scale agricultural practices such as spreading fertilizers or spraying pesticides can also cause groundwater pollution.

Variations in common agricultural practices, along with local soil, groundwater and climatic conditions, affect the likelihood of groundwater contamination. The actual threat posed by agricultural activities to groundwater quality is unknown, although the increasing number of detected incidents of groundwater contamination involving agricultural activities indicates a problem of potentially significant proportions. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a nationwide survey of pesticides in drinking water wells to provide the first national picture of the extent of agricultural chemicals in drinking water wells.

Results from the National Pesticide Survey will provide the first accurate, statistical estimate of the extent of pesticide contamination of drinking water wells.
