B o r n in A n g o l a , N. Y., on N o v e m b e r 26, 1876, of parents d e s c e n d e d f r o m E n g l i s h and F r e n c h families, his p r i m a r y and s e c o n d a r y educa- tion w a s s e c u r e d in the s c h o o l s of E r i e County, N. Y. U p o n gradua- tion f r o m Buffalo Central H i g h S c h o o l , he entered Cornell U n i v e r s i t y , f r o m w h i c h he w a s g r a d u a t e d in 1901. He w a s e m p l o y e d as a R e - s e a r c h E n g i n e e r b y the Buffalo F o r g e C o . o f Buffalo, N . Y., w h e r e h e m a d e h i m s e l f so useful as to b e c o m e Chief E n g i n e e r by 1906. In 1915, w i t h a g r o u p of o t h e r s , he f o u n d e d the Carrier E n g i n e e r i n g C o r p o r - ation o f w h i c h h e w a s g i v e n the p r e s i d e n c y .

His r e s e a r c h e s on the c o n t r o l of the t e m p e r a t u r e , h u m i d i t y and m o v e m e n t o f air, h a v e b e c o m e the standard f o r m u l a e and tables o f the present-day e n g i n e e r . H i s m e c h a n i c a l i n v e n t i o n s in this field h a v e laid the f o u n d a t i o n of the p r e s e n t s c i e n c e of air c o n d i t i o n i n g . T h r o u g h his d e v e l o p m e n t s in this s c i e n c e h u n d r e d s of industries h a v e b e e n benefited and the e c o n o m i c l o c a t i o n of m a n u f a c t u r i n g plants has b e e n m a d e p o s s i b l e w i t h o u t regard t o climate, for h e has m a d e c l i m a t e c o n t r o l l a b l e within the plant. He has e v e n b r o u g h t the a d v a n t a g e s and c o m f o r t s of a c o n t r o l l e d c l i m a t e within the r e a c h of the a v e r a g e h o u s e h o l d . H i s life is a d e m o n s t r a t i o n of A m e r i c a n d e m o c r a c y at w o r k w i t h all of its o p p o r t u n i t i e s and a c c o m p a n y i n g responsibilities, a d e m o c r a c y that is w o r t h fighting for. His c a r e e r s h o w s that it is still p o s s i b l e in this d e m o c r a c y of ours for o n e to start at the b o t t o m and rise to the h i g h e s t p o s i t i o n s in t e c h n o l o g y and e n g i n e e r i n g , manufacturing, finance, banking, railroading, education, and that kind of g o o d citizen- ship that is e v i d e n c e d by his interest in religious, social, fraternal and p h i l a n t h r o p i c o r g a n i z a t i o n s . S h e e r ability a l o n e w o u l d not suffice for a c h i e v e m e n t s of such m a g n i t u d e . Character of highest type is im- plied.

H O N O R A R Y D E G R E E S 59 In 1935 his h o m e t o w n folks of M e x i c o , Mo., d e v o t e d a day to cele- brating the 25th a n n i v e r s a r y of his c o m i n g to M e x i c o and starting his c o m p a n y . T h a t s h o w s w h a t the p e o p l e w h o k n o w h i m b e s t think o f him as a man and a citizen. R e c e n t l y his c o m p a n y w a s a w a r d e d the c o v e t e d M a r i t i m e " M " for distinguished s e r v i c e t o the nation i n its w a r effort. His is the first and o n l y c o m p a n y of its kind to win this h o n o r . T h a t s h o w s w h a t the United States G o v e r n m e n t thinks of his patriotic s e r v i c e s . W e s t m i n s t e r C o l l e g e o f Fulton, M o . , has c o n f e r r e d upon him the d e g r e e of D o c t o r of L a w s , and the U n i v e r s i t y of M i s s o u r i S c h o o l o f M i n e s and M e t a l l u r g y has c o n f e r r e d upon h i m the d e g r e e o f D o c t o r o f E n g i n e e r i n g . T h a t s h o w s w h a t h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n i n the State of Missouri thinks of h i m . It r e m a i n s for him to be h o n o r e d in c e r a m i c c i r c l e s . T h e entire superstructure o f his a c h i e v e m e n t s and s e r v i c e s is built u p o n the solid r o c k of c e r a m i c s . A s such, he and his c a r e e r will stand as an e v e r l a s t i n g inspiration to y o u n g c e r a m i c graduates starting their life w o r k in the c e r a m i c p r o f e s s i o n . T h e man of w h o m I am a b o u t to s p e a k has had a life-long interest in s c i e n c e , e s p e c i a l l y in g e o l o g y . .

H e w a s b o r n a t Nile, N e w Y o r k , and graduated f r o m the Friend- ship A c a d e m y in 1883 w i t h o u t m o n e y , but w i t h an i n b o r n determina- tion to go further, hardships n o t w i t h s t a n d i n g .

A c c o r d i n g l y , h e entered A l f r e d U n i v e r s i t y , t h o u g h h e had t o w a l k t o A l f r e d . M o d e r n hitch-hiking w a s a s y e t u n k n o w n . H e w a s gradu- ated in '88, his study h a v i n g b e e n interrupted to g e t funds.

T h e n , h a v i n g in the m e a n t i m e taught in the A l b i o n A c a d e m y in W i s c o n s i n , h e e n t e r e d the Graduate S c h o o l o f G e o l o g y o f the Univer- ersity o f C h i c a g o , w h e r e h e studied three y e a r s u n d e r the f a m o u s Pro- f e s s o r C h a m b e r l a i n , a p r i v i l e g e w h i c h f e w l i v i n g g e o l o g i s t s c a n c l a i m .

F o r the n e x t eight y e a r s he taught Natural S c i e n c e s in the State T e a c h e r s ' C o l l e g e o f M a y v i l l e , N o r t h D a k o t a . T h e n h e w a s e l e c t e d a s the P r o f e s s o r of G e o l o g y in the State A g r i c u l t u r a l C o l l e g e of F a r g o , N o r t h Dakota, o n e of his duties b e i n g that of d i r e c t o r of the State A g r i c u l t u r a l and G e o l o g i c a l S u r v e y .

In all of his w o r k there had b e e n m o r e or less difficulty in g e t t i n g funds to c a r r y o n . But n o w a p r o p o s i t i o n w a s offered w h i c h w o u l d be free from f i n a n c i a l restrictions, n a m e l y , that o f D e v e l o p m e n t C o m m i s - s i o n e r o f the N o r t h e r n Pacific R a i l r o a d . T h i s p o s i t i o n h e a c c e p t e d , t h o u g h reluctantly, in 1910, and n o w the v a s t territory from M i n n e s o t a to the Pacific O c e a n w a s at his d i s p o s a l for g e o l o g i c a l and e c o n o m i c study. T h e n c e f o r t h " A p p l i e d G e o l o g y as F u n d a m e n t a l to the Great Industry of A g r i c u l t u r e " w a s the t h e m e of his l a b o r s w i t h the North- ern Pacific and the Great N o r t h e r n R a i l r o a d s until his r e t i r e m e n t in 1935.

H e i s a F e l l o w o f the A m e r i c a n A s s o c i a t i o n for the A d v a n c e m e n t o f S c i e n c e , and a F e l l o w o f the A m e r i c a n G e o g r a p h i c a l S o c i e t y . A m o n g his w r i t i n g s a r e : United States G o v e r n m e n t F o l i o s and State Papers, a l s o several b o o k s i n c l u d i n g : The Story of The Praries; The Story of The North Star State, Minnesota; Montana: The Geological Story; and finally, Adventures In Scenery, in w h i c h the s c e n e r y and g e o l o g y of California are beautifully and effectively set forth.

H e e n t e r e d A l f r e d Univer- sity in 1884, earned the d e g r e e of B a c h e l o r of A r t s in 1888, and six y e a r s later r e c e i v e d from his A l m a M a t e r the d e g r e e o f M a s t e r o f A r t s . F o r three y e a r s after his graduation he w a s e m p l o y e d in the offices o f the Charles P o t t e r and C o m p a n y printing p r e s s w o r k s o f Plainfield, N e w Jersey. During this m o s t significant half-century with its rapid c h a n g e s and d e v e l o p m e n t s in s o c i a l and industrial o r g a n i z a t i o n s in w h i c h legal a d v i c e has b e e n m o s t important, this m a n has b e e n an a c t i v e , keen- m i n d e d , w i s e , and e m i n e n t l y s u c c e s s f u l l a w y e r i n N e w Y o r k City. H e h a s carried on a g e n e r a l p r a c t i c e but has s p e c i a l i z e d in c o r p o r a t i o n law, r e o r g a n i z a t i o n s , litigation, and estate l a w . He has r e p r e s e n t e d m a n y clients, i n c l u d i n g s e v e r a l l a r g e b a n k s and trust c o m p a n i e s . A m o n g o t h e r clients w e r e the estate o f J a m e s A . B a i l e y o f the f i r m o f B a r n u m and Bailey, and n u m e r o u s c o r p o r a t i o n s of m o r e than State- w i d e i m p o r t a n c e . In his earlier p r a c t i c e he w a s c o u n s e l for B e r n a r r A . M a c F a d d e n , i n c o r p o r a t e d , his P h y s i c a l Culture P u b l i s h i n g C o m p a n y and v a r i o u s o t h e r p h y s i c a l culture c o m p a n i e s , and m a d e a trip to L o n d o n , England, in Mr. M a c F a d d e n ' s interests.

In c a r r y i n g on such e x t e n s i v e p r a c t i c e it w a s n e c e s s a r y for him to r e p r e s e n t his clients in m a n y different c o u r t s . In addition to the N e w Y o r k State c o u r t s , he has b e e n a d m i t t e d to no less than five dif- ferent United States district or circuit c o u r t s , and v e r y r e c e n t l y in the U n i t e d States S u p r e m e Court at W a s h i n g t o n , D. C. He has had large e x p e r i e n c e in preparation of briefs and a r g u m e n t s of a p p e a l s in N e w Y o r k and United States appellate c o u r t s and has had signal s u c c e s s in

s e c u r i n g f a v o r a b l e d e c i s i o n s . At the p r e s e n t t i m e he has been re- tained to a r g u e b e f o r e the U n i t e d States S u p r e m e Court an appeal of a c a s e i n v o l v i n g the c i t y of N e w a r k . Ke b e l i e v e s , h o w e v e r , that the m o s t i m p o r t a n t duty of a l a w y e r lies in g i v i n g s o u n d a d v i c e to clients in o p e r a t i o n of their business, in p r e p a r a t i o n of o p i n i o n s , c o n t r a c t s , and d o c u m e n t s , and in k e e p i n g clients out of litigation w h e n e v e r pos- sible.

H i s c o n n e c t i o n with A l f r e d U n i v e r s i t y is m o r e than that of an h o n o r e d a l u m n u s . He is the son of a m a n w h o for ten y e a r s from 1888 to 1898 w a s P r o f e s s o r of H i s t o r y and P o l i t i c a l S c i e n c e on this c a m p u s . G e o r g e D. Stoddard w a s b o r n in C a r b o n d a l e , P e n n s y l v a n i a , in 1897. I m e n t i o n the y e a r of his birth b e c a u s e I feel that m a n y of the h o n o r s he has r e c e i v e d and is a b o u t to r e c e i v e are as m u c h an ex- p r e s s i o n of c o m p l e t e c o n f i d e n c e in w h a t he is destined to a c c o m p l i s h as t h e y are a t o k e n of r e c o g n i t i o n of his already e n v i a b l e r e c o r d as s c h o l a r and administrator.

In 1921 he r e c e i v e d the d e g r e e of B a c h e l o r of A r t s from Pennsyl- vania State C o l l e g e . In 1923 he r e c e i v e d the d i p l o m a of the Univer- sity of Paris and, in 1925, the d e g r e e of D o c t o r of P h i l o s o p h y f r o m the U n i v e r s i t y o f I o w a .

He is a p s y c h o l o g i s t . His w o r k in the field of child d e v e l o p m e n t i s universally a c c l a i m e d and r e s p e c t e d e v e n b y those w h o d i s a g r e e with him. A s d i r e c t o r o f the I o w a Child W e l f a r e R e s e a r c h Station h e w a s the guiding spirit o f m a n y and varied r e s e a r c h p r o j e c t s , o f w h i c h p e r h a p s the m o s t r e v o l u t i o n a r y is referred to v e r y s i m p l y as " T h e I o w a Studies." He and his c o - w o r k e r s p r a c t i c a l l y d e s t r o y e d the m y t h of the d i v i n e right of the IQ.

He is the author and co-author of m a n y t e x t b o o k s and treatises.

He has c o n t r i b u t e d hundreds of articles in the fields of child p s y c h o l - o g y and child d e v e l o p m e n t , education at all levels, including adult edu- c a t i o n , and tests and m e a s u r e m e n t s .

His latest w o r k , a five-hundred-page v o l u m e on The Meaning of Intelligence, is barely off the press. It is a scientific, c o m p r e h e n s i v e , meaningful, and c o u r a g e o u s dissertation on h u m a n i n t e l l i g e n c e and a cluster o f p r o b l e m s "thereunto pertaining."

He is a m e m b e r of p r a c t i c a l l y e v e r y scientific and p r o f e s s i o n a l s o c i e t y that has e v e n a r e m o t e b e a r i n g on his w o r k . He is co-editor of s e v e r a l j o u r n a l s and m a g a z i n e s in the fields of p s y c h o l o g y and edu- c a t i o n .

In 1925 he j o i n e d the faculty of the U n i v e r s i t y of I o w a as A s s o c i -

ate in P s y c h o l o g y ; in 1936 he b e c a m e Dean of the Graduate C o l l e g e . He w a s d i r e c t o r of the I o w a Child W e l f a r e R e s e a r c h Station f r o m 1928 to 1942. In s o m e of his spare time b e t w e e n 1918 and 1923, he w a s a c o m m i s s i o n e d officer in the Field A r t i l l e r y R e s e r v e C o r p s .

In 1942 the B o a r d of R e g e n t s of the State of N e w Y o r k , either t h r o u g h a set of e x c e p t i o n a l l y fortunate c i r c u m s t a n c e s ( n u r t u r e ) , or a s t r o k e of genius, ( n a t u r e ) , e l e c t e d Dean S t o d d a r d to the p r e s i d e n c y o f the U n i v e r s i t y o f the State o f N e w Y o r k , thus a p p o i n t i n g h i m State C o m m i s s i o n e r o f E d u c a t i o n .
