July li
1961
President Joe and Members of the Board: I am assuming the prerogative which the President assumes when he gives an ad lib report. I have no -written report, but I have some things that I would like to talk to you about.
Joe, of course, very graciously permitted me to have the privilege of visiting ten districts throughout this year, and it was certainly a very marvelous experience for me. However, it was not just a case of visiting as far as I was concerned.
I went into each and every one of these areas ready to make observations of clubs and divisions as well as districts in relation to our leadership training program;
and while I had not made these visits previously, except to conventions and such as you do, I was most pleased and came away in every case feeling that we had made some real progress in developing leadership, implementing the manner in which leadership should be developed. In one case in particular I note a very, very definite improvement this year, and that is in the Minnesota-Dakotas District.
I really feel that those fellows are finally out of a rut there, and they are now doing as fine a piece of work as we expect Kiwanians to do. We must give due credit, of course, to their Governor who is a bunch of dynamite, but he does get these
people working. He told me, rrr learned my lessons at the Council Meeting, and that is the way I am teaching it,rr and he is doing a fine piece of work.
Of course, in each and every one of these districts the ~uestion came up on the proposed amendment on foreigh extension; and while I did not endeavor to influence them one way or the other, I did take the trouble to elucidate on both sides of the
~uestion, trying to help them come to a conclusion on their part and not particu- larly on my part. But it is paramount in their mind, and they really are interested in it.
I would like to t~ll you that all of the committee chairmen for the ensuing year have been appointed and they have all accepted. When I wrote them, I put it right on the line to them. I told them exactly what was expected of them officially, and they all came back with letters and agreed to my proposition) so that should any of them fail they can never say that they did not understand what was to be done. I have been very successful in having people accept committee assignments. They are practically complete and, of course, within the next ten days they should all be ready to be released to the General Office so that we will know exactly who they are.
I have completed practically all of the convention assignments) assuming) of course, that I might be elected President of Kiwanis in doing all this; and should there be any confusion on dates of men who are not running for office, men who are holding over on the Board, I want you please to contact me and let me know what those con- fused dates will be, so that when we meet after the convention we will not have the usual confusion of conflicts.
It has been a real privilege and pleasure) President Joe) to represent you. I couldn't do it as well as you could do it) but I did the best I could. The ac- ceptance was terrific, it was tremendous, and I found no district at all that felt that they were being second class by having the President-Elect - even though it might have been true - and I extended greetings to each and every one of them on behalf of this Board. You men would just be amazed at the number of people in the various districts who feel they know each of you individually very well) and I would like to tell you that they have very high regard for you.
That completes my report) President Joe.
