2. Kritik terhadap Teori atau Materi
Teori tentang budaya individualis dan kolektivis mendapat kritik karena dianggap terlalu umum dan kurang akurat. Banyak yang berpendapat bahwa pembagian ini tidak selalu mencerminkan kenyataan, karena dalam satu negara bisa terdapat unsur individualisme dan kolektivisme sekaligus. Selain itu, setiap orang, apa pun budayanya, tetap membutuhkan keseimbangan antara rasa percaya diri dan hubungan sosial yang baik. Penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa perilaku yang dianggap khas dalam suatu budaya belum tentu berlaku untuk semua orang di dalamnya. Oleh karena itu, teori ini sebaiknya digunakan dengan lebih fleksibel dan tidak dianggap sebagai aturan baku dalam memahami kepribadian dan perilaku seseorang.
